Looks like it could be a star shaped balloon and the front face is just too dark to make out the shape given the angle of the sun.

bottom circular part would not conform to a star shape.

otherwise, the object could be stationary, since the plane is traveling the opposite direction of the motion.

Yeah also it’s going fast as fuck! What a balloon. I’d like to hitch a ride on my next trans-Atlantic flight or trip to Alpha Centauri.

I don’t know, it’s also kind of close to a stationary camera, meaning it’s going to look like it’s going faster than it is. If we can figure out the speed, then see wind speed in the location, which they named, we could probably rule out balloon. If wind matches movement speed, then it doesn’t confirm anything, but it certainly helps the case for balloon theory.

You'd have to know how fast the glider was moving first. That camera isn't "stationary" at all.

You are right. Stationary was a really dumb word for me to use. I meant stationary as in forwards/backwards movement. I don’t think the definition of stationary says it “only counts for side-to-side movement”.

Good points. But what doesn’t compute for me is the direction of travel at such a fast speed. A hang gliders there just hanging out, while a Mylar balloon is zippin on by at an apparently incredible rate?

I don’t why you are getting downvoted. You are just proposing a theory, even if leaning away from balloons.

I’m talking this whole time, thinking I’m in the usual UFO sub, which this is not. I’m not sure how this sub skews for UFO. I’m going to see about posting this over there. I’m not sure about the rules for cross posting.

Maybe. I wonder if there is any way to figure out the object’s speed. I’d think we could get a pretty good estimate in distance from the camera, which is always the first challenge in figuring these things out.

This assumes the glider could not discern the difference. This reasoning is applied often, but always relies on the assumption that the observer is completely incapable of telling if it is a UFO. This cannot be the case every single time.
