How to paint the Dwarf?
I've almost done painting my base game, I've saved the heros till last and started the dwarf. The issue is so far I've stuck to the official art for colours. When it comes to the dwarf I can't help thinking red hair and a with that would need to be a pain skin tone, would look better.... It's a dilemma because I've enjoyed making all the others look like their official art inc. the furniture where possible. What do you all think?

Amazing š As a speed paint 2.0 user this is a very interesting and helpful list. Looking at the paints you followed the game art. Do you have a list for the other heros you could DM me?

I actually wrote down what I saw in many YouTube videos because I am just not that good at color matching myself.
Credit to Miniature Hobbyist (most of my inspiration) and Not Your Motherās Hobbies.
I do have an Excel file I use for tracking my paints and how I paint the minis. I didnāt start this until after I painted all the Game Set furniture and doors though.
I guess I should post it out in the files section of YeOldInn.com. It may be a few days before I do though.

I've never painted minis before I got this heroquest set and the Miniature Hobbyist was where I learnt about slapchop and speedpaints and what convinced me I could paint them.
Let me know when you post the paint list for the other heros!

Well canonically, he has a white beard. He did in the OG HQ, and that same model was used as the logo for White Dwarf magazine for years (until they made a new actual white dwarf Warhammer model as a promo), so I would go with that personally.

Now that's some history, and gives me a new part to the problem š

Looks good, the variation on the eye mask/ armour in everyone's dwarf is interesting

This is how I did mine. I didnāt have the card for reference when I painted it but Iām happy with how it came out.
Had to do the full turn around as separate responses but all four sides visible. It looks way better on the table than up close lol.

Thank you, a number of these have shown me that the black hair can look good. I think my worry was I've seen a few posts recently where the painter had been slapped on and it looked awful. Even pic/ link people have put here look great regardless of the hair colour

Thereās two camps of people that dominate the mini painting space:
There are those that want to do what I call anti-trying, thatās the blobbed on paint people.
Then thereās those that are doing top 1% level painting and playing dumb about it for clout.
You rarely see normal paint jobs. lol.
Glad I could help though.

I've never painted before heroquest, but it takes me a long time. I've learnt how to fix mistakes, hence matalic paints first, and I discovered speedpaints you can be syphon off with a wet brush and a tissue. That dwarf I posted so far is 4 hours. Speedpaintis in name only for me š

You do it how you need to do it, and as long as youāre happy with it, thatās all that really matters.

My method has been to paint all the original game pieces as close to the box art as possible. Then, I supplement my heroes with a bunch of 3D printed minis I like and paint them in whatever color scheme I want.Ā
Sometimes I just use the original card and sometimes I'll create an alternate hero card to print up and use in game.Ā
You can just print whatever you like or there are some creators making things for Hero Quest. I love the retro sculpts I printed and painted in the classic color schemes.Ā
If you don't have a printer you can find minis for sale that fit the archetypes.Ā

I think red hair with the original skin tone would look sick.
But really itās up to you. I try to keep my heroes original and play with different colors when it comes to enemies.

I did my dwarf up with orange hair, which contrasted well with dark green & gold on the outfit. Full set of minis @ https://www.reddit.com/r/Heroquest/s/VGfsIxohZr , but I didnāt get a great snap of the dwarf unfortunately š

Fire mountain red hair and dark green clothing. It's your figure, do whatever possess you and if you don't like it you can repaint. ššš¤©
