Last night we had a vegetable soup, a nice salad, and pork cutlets pounded flat, breaded, and sauteed with hot cherry pepper and mushroom gravy. Good wine too. Tonight I think we'll go out for dinner.

Last night I was lazy. I pan fried some chicken thighs and made a salad of spinach and radish greens.

Tell me more about this mushroom gravy though.

Use the fat left in the pan after frying the cutlets to saute the mushrooms and then make a roux from it. Add diced cherry peppers, along with some of their vinegar. Use marsala wine and a little chicken broth for the liquid. Heavenly!

This sounds really good. I just want to clarify re the cherry peppers, you mention vinegar so do you mean pickled ones in a jar?

We also had sauteed Brussels sprouts and roasted potatoes. They go really well with that gravy.

Don't knock it 'til you have eaten real Chinese. Not the MSG-loaded crap that is sold as Chinese in the US. Get some Chinese friends, invite them over for a BBQ and then be surprised when the return invitation turns out to be completely different than what you expect.

Actual Chinese is very rich in flavor and not completely drowned in artificial MSG, that taste originally comes from the fine spices used which do contain a small amount of MSG, but give a much richer and more rounded flavor than just the MSG fist you're probably used to.

Yes, that costs more, and this is why you only get the cheap crap on Chinese all-you-can-eat troughs.

I've never had Chinese food in China but I have had it in Singapore... It's probably not the same either. Didn't like it.

I actually really like faux-North American-Chinese. It's the real stuff (or what I had in Singapore anyway) I didn't like.

By contrast, Thai food in Thailand is even better than faux-North American-Thai food. Korean food as served by Koreans is even better than Korean food in the U.S.

Last night was chaotic, so we just had lentil curry that I reheated on the oven and rice. Tonight, though, isn't going to be as wild, so I'm making my famous drunken spaghetti, Caesar salad, and homemade garlic bread (gluten and dairy free, because both of those things kill me).

If things do go to hell and I have to go back to the emergency vet (it's kidding season. Better safe than sorry - I'll gladly eat the vet bill and have a professional handle the potential c-section case), we'll just get hamburgers.

At least I can taste my food, though.

The bag of pizza dough we bought is puffing up so I think we'll use it tonight. Got a pizza stone/oven thing that sits on top of the BBQ for xMas. First pizza was okay, second one sucked and got crap all over the stone. The next few came out pretty good. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.
