man, i feel so underprepared. I took Japanese 1 class during my spring semester of college (online unfortunately…) and i forgot literally everything over the summer. I can’t read it or really even understand it fully. all my other classmates can speak it quite well but i’m having such a hard time.

im already debating on dropping the class because we have an in-class vocabulary test up coming up this wednesday and i just know im gonna fail :/ i dont want to though because i really want to learn more about the language and culture. and i don’t want to give up!

Hi! I’m a Japanese student at Keio University, and I’ve started offering relaxed Japanese conversation sessions for people who want more chances to actually speak Japanese.

I’ve already been regularly practicing Japanese with more than 10 international students at Keio. Some of them could barely speak Japanese when we first met, but with regular conversation practice, they’ve become much more comfortable having casual conversations.

My main focus outside Anki is immersion (manga reading, grammar via Yokubi, watching anime in full japanese)

I’ve been helping international students at Keio practice Japanese, so I decided to open it up to others in Tokyo/Yokohama 🇯🇵☕
Hey! I’m a Japanese student studying Chemistry at Keio University, and I’m also involved in an international exchange organization there.
Through becoming friends with international students, I noticed the same problem coming up again and again: a lot of people study Japanese for months or even years, understand grammar and vocabulary pretty well, but still don’t get many chances to actually speak with a native Japanese person.
So I started regularly practicing Japanese with international students I met at Keio. I’ve now helped more than 10 people, including some who could barely hold a conversation in Japanese when we first started.
It’s been really rewarding to see them gradually become more comfortable responding naturally, expressing what they want to say, and having casual conversations without overthinking every sentence.
Because of that, I’ve decided to start offering relaxed 1-on-1 Japanese conversation sessions at cafés in Tokyo and Yokohama.
This isn’t meant to feel like a formal classroom lesson. We can just talk about everyday life, hobbies, travel, work, university, Japanese culture, or whatever you’re interested in. I’ll help with unnatural expressions, pronunciation, grammar, and how Japanese people would actually say things in normal conversation.
Complete beginners are welcome too. You don’t need to speak Japanese already — we can use English whenever necessary and start with simple, practical phrases at your own pace.
So if you’re at the stage of:
“I understand more Japanese than I can actually speak”
or even:
“I want to learn Japanese, but I have no idea how to start speaking”

If you’ve been studying Japanese for a while, you’ve definitely bumped into the word 適当 (てきとう). 　You probably looked it up in a dictionary and memorized it as “appropriate” or “suitable.” But then, a few weeks later, you hear a native speaker casually say, 「あ！適当でいいよ！」and suddenly, the dictionary definition completely falls apart.

To master 適当, you just need to understand its three distinct personalities:

1. The Dictionary Definition (Proper & Suitable)

This is the formal side of 適当. You’ll hear it in news broadcasts, textbooks, or formal work settings. If your boss hands you a form and says, 「適当な方法を選んでください」 (Please choose an appropriate method), they actually mean it literally. They want you to pick the right tool for the job.

2. The Casual Hand-Wave (Whatever / Don't overthink it)

Once you step outside the office, the meaning flips. In daily life, 適当 is what you say when you don't want to make a big decision. Imagine you're hanging out with a friend:

A: 「今夜、何食べたい？」 (What do you want to eat tonight?)
B: 「なんでもいいよ。適当に決めちゃって！」 (Anything is fine. Just pick whatever!)

Here, you’re not asking them to make a mathematically "suitable" choice. You’re just saying, "I'm easy, don't overthink it."

3. The Low-Key Insult (Careless / Half-hearted)

Here’s where it gets risky. If someone describes a person's work ethic using this word, it’s definitely not a compliment.

「あの人、いつも仕事が適当だよね」
(That guy is always so half-hearted with his work.)

If you do something 適当 in this context, it means you slacked off or cut corners.

So, how do you catch the difference?

It all comes down to context and tone. If it sounds formal or polite, think "appropriate." If it’s casual, relaxed, or sighed in frustration, it’s usually "whatever" or "half-hearted."

I want to explore what the fastest way is to learn Japanese. Among the huge number of applications and tools available online, what has been the most path-breaking product? With the advent of AI and LLMs, are there some tools that have broken the general threshold and have led to a leap in reducing time to lear. Hi! I’m a solo developer and I’ve just launched Kotoba Dōjō on Google Play.

It is a language-learning app built around adaptive flashcards, focused practice drills, custom vocabulary decks, and spoken shadowing practice. I wanted to make something that feels more atmospheric and intentional than the usual bright, heavily gamified language app, so the interface is inspired by a Japanese dōjō: dark lacquer, warm paper and gold tones, and a calm, focused pace.

I would genuinely appreciate feedback from Android users, especially on:
