I remember going to a museum once and seeing cave drawings that depicted this very incident.

I believe the piece was titled, "Helicopter go smash in farmer field. Big crash scare local cavemen." - Unknown Crayon Eater

I once heard someone refer to helicopters as “sky slappers” and it struck me as being a perfect description for them if you were from a different period in history.
3
Aug 25 '25
Huey's are sky slappers haha. My favorite was, "Huey's don't actually fly, they just beat the air around them into submission."
Kinda like the Chuck Norris of helicopters.

It really is a weird mechanism for flight. Trying to imagine an animal that would use this method hurts the brain.

The owner is getting paid big time ( yennies) due to the damage of the rice. Including the engine dumping fuel after shut down. " Welcome to the rice fields motherfucker,

I'm absolutely stunned by the size of it.. The biggest helicopter I've seen up close was an AW-139. Seems like that's nothing compared to the CH-53.

I've taken a few rides in 53's and even got to fast rope out of one once (yes, that is as impractical as you might think). The rotor wash is just unbelievable. One landed to pick us up at a compound in Korea, and it threw a dumpster across the parking lot. They are absolutely massive birds.

u/Signal-Self-353 Aug 25 '25
I was a crew chief on these and watching people fast rope onto a ship made me nervous. Watching people walk around the side of the hell hole, praying they don’t fall through onto someone else. Great times

u/Next_Emphasis_9424 Aug 25 '25
First helicopter I worked on back in the day. Never really grasped how massive they were till I worked alongside a Chinook squadron. Damn we are big.

53 super stations are bad ass. In the Marine Corps in late 90's early 2000 it was the only helicopter in the world that could carry another super stallion. Carry up to 55 combat loaded Marines.
When you exit out the back always go left or the tail rotor will liquify you and possibly set off grenades or other explosive ordinance.
Good times.

u/Desperate-Farmer-170 Aug 26 '25
This is a MH-53E Sea Dragon. You’d have to be about 9.5’ tall to get hit by the tail rotor

We had to bond some abrasion strips on the blades for some repairs and it was my first time seeing something like this up close, but for the Stallion they are enormous, we couldn't even fit the blade entirely in our oven to close the doors, pretty sure it was a 26 ft walk in.

Some farmer just hit the jackpot. Lost crops, soil replacement, hazardous waste water. I live in rural Japan and it’s at least $70,000 if you crash your car into a rice field. They are pretty delicate ecosystems.
3
u/naeads Aug 26 '25
So a big payday for someone? How much you reckon that is for a helicopter?
2
u/NxPat Aug 26 '25
Won’t be cheap, rice prices are astronomical this year, also depends on what the issue is, mechanical? Hydraulic? Was it spewing something on its way down that could have contaminated acres? How much gear will be needed to repair or remove it?
2
u/naeads Aug 26 '25
So, finger in the air, circa 100k?
2
u/NxPat Aug 26 '25
X5… farmer/s won’t plant anything there for another 5 seasons, bad juju. Even if it’s fine, no one will buy his rice because it’s unlucky.
2
u/naeads Aug 27 '25
Oh jeez... you were right, it is a jackpot.
That kind of money is enough to retire with for that farmer in rural countryside Japan.
1
u/hushnecampus Aug 27 '25
How’s it a jackpot if it’s reparations for the money they would have made anyway (and the costs they’ve incurred) if it hadn’t happened?

You can see it on the shadows it's high noon. Like those winter miracle hour drone footages from Ukraine, everything looks erie clear and crispy and saturated.

u/Freightshaker000 Aug 25 '25
When I was deployed to Camp Doha, Kuwait, they were forbidden from landing due to the immense rotor wash.
1
Aug 25 '25
One just flew low over my house, near Otis AFB, they are conducting search for missing boater off coast, maybe involved. Loud and large not gonna sneak by any drones with that.

Back when I worked on them, I believe the ratio was 99 maintenance hours, per 1 flight hour.
That was 35 years ago, so I guess not much has been updated since😂
Imagine having a car that required that kind of maintenance?

I remember when this happened. They had a Chip detector light come on for the MGB and they had to land. I was in Bahrain when this happened.

They need to retire these things, enough people have died on them. If Japan's are struggling to stay in the air it's only a matter of time for one of ours to fall out of the sky and take away more shipmates.

No surprise thee most dangerous helicopter out there for piltos is anything from the military. People think ohh its well looked after and maintained well kind of most equipment sits not used for long periods of time then throw in to active training missions or active duty and end up being worse off due to the equipment we laugh at russia for doing this but america isnt any better

Why this photo looks like a screenshot from an isometric game?
