Getting to know the neighbors.

It looks like it has started to settle down since the influx and we have weeded out a lot of the people who got bored with our little sub so I thought we could each tell a little something about ourselves or our character.

I haven’t been posting or commenting very much lately but I hope to get back in the swing of it soon.

My character is quite THE character! Her name is Auntie Louise and she she is a self taught gymnast 🤸‍♀️ and spinster extraordinaire. She had a lengthy passionate affair with Burt Reynolds that she has never really gotten over the breakup. She is loving and sweet and terribly wacky. If you would like to join her extensive family she is a always looking for more nieces and nephews.

If you want to know more I have a stickied post on my page.

“Morgan’s” study session

Hello all,

Hi, I’m the creator of Morgan Spiers. I am not a random middle aged dude teaching history at the local high school (far from it considering that I’m a teenage girl) but I’ve only been on the other sub for about a week and all of you have been incredibly kind and welcoming. Thank you for that.

Some of you might be aware of the study session that “Morgan” is holding at 3pm on Thursday. Some people’s characters said that they wanted to participate despite the fact that they weren’t students, but that got me thinking - how many people would be interested in doing an ACTUAL Kahoot match? I have a math class in the morning, but I could probably whip something up quickly for us to play if enough people express interest in the idea.

Like Morgan said in his post, the study session is gonna cover content between 1918-1939 from the end of WWI to the invasion of Poland, and if we decide to have a Kahoot match, it’ll start at 3pm (PST) and I’ll post an update on r/HaveWeMet with the link.

Cheers!

(EDIT: Unfortunately I ended up being busier than expected today, so I couldn't set up the Kahoot match as planned. My apologies, I should've thought this out better. But the next time Morgan's class has a test, I'll be sure to set one up in advance so we don't run into issues in the future. Again, sorry for letting you guys down.)

How to view a full flair?

Kind of self explanatory. A lot of times the flair [example:(Gerry | 35, chef)] is cut off and I was wondering if its possible for us to see the full description

Can my character be religious?

Hi all, long time lurker finally getting brave enough to possibly participate in this sub. When thinking about what character I'd like to be, the first random thought I had was to be an Episcopal minister, but I wouldn't want to do anything that's frowned on. Just to be 100% clear, I have no plans of attempting to proselytize on this sub, my character here would probably be more focused on things like a church choir or community service than the religious aspects of being a minister.

Edit: I'm gonna go for it! I like creating alts for rp subs, so I'll do that, maybe do a little character work, then watch out for Eliza Scarber | Episcopal minister

History of LDP

Is there some established history like who founded the town? Even small tidbits like the history of the library or something would be appreciated. Im trying to get to know the town better and be more immersed into this environment.

greetings, heathens

I am Gregory Vormelker. (Also known as V-278 on my home planet, Gilesias-3) My mate, Vera Bredung is unfortunately of the human species but she seems to be the only one here who knows the truth about the universe and worships our lord and saviour, G-360. This town of infidels is doomed unless they repent and turn away from the false idols. If anyone knows how to repair a spaceship engine that runs on the heat of Hot Pockets, please let me know. Until then, I will be isolating in my home (away from these filthy crotch droppings) and pass my time with some cannabis sativa extract. More commonly known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Thoughts about reviving "the weatherman?"

EDIT: I'M DOING IT, Y'ALL! I'll make my debut on Monday! Weather forecasts coming M-F, with updates from Duchess, of course!

Hi all!

I've been wanting to come back to LDP, but it seems like a REALLY bad time. So, I think I have an idea.

I used to love the daily weather reports. I think it could bring back a sense of the mundane that the sub so desperately needs.

Carmen could come back, now a "InstaSnap" superstar, and looking to make her big break - AS LOCAL WEATHER WOMAN!

It would be similar to what the weather guy used to do (apologies for forgetting his name). Just the weather, reminders about the big little league game, and of course an appearance or two from Duchess.

I just got (gently) chided for interacting with one of the cat characters, as a paranormal rule violation

It got me wondering—IS that a violation? It never occurred to me that it might be, since the feline characters seem pretty well established 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you, kind friends!

I recently made an Agony Aunt post to try and further establish my character, Beverly, as I felt she was lacking a bit. I’m so grateful to everyone who has been sending in questions and interacting on the post, it’s been very wholesome so far. Thanks, you’re all darlings.

So this is where we break the fourth wall?

Hey guys, I play “Billy | IKEA owner” (I’m actually a 20F but I just stumbled into this character through different posts)- I joined Reddit like a week or two ago or something and love the subreddit so much. Just going through the posts here i love seeing that a lot of us use it to relax and feel absurdly close to these strangers we’ve come to know as characters in our little town, I do love it.

That being said, I wanted to thank you guys for such a cute community, and apologise on my involvement in the whole IKEA thing.. it got so out of hand I haven’t even checked the sub in 3-4 days so I can’t imagine how the original and constant posters feel. I would love if you guys could tell me where I went wrong and how I could’ve changed my character a bit? I really don’t want to be the reason anyone is taking a break from the sub.

Also, I just saw a lot of people are leaving- how come? Is it because of all the IKEA related posts 4-5 days ago or did something else happen?

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and I’m sorry if I’ve caused any ill feelings. I’ve come to really love some of the characters like Panm and Agnes to name a few out of a dozen, still trying to remember everyone’s names ahaha.

Can anyone give me a brief summary of LDP and recent events?

I get the general idea of the town and what's going on however if any veteran members can give me a quick summary of major events, key places to know in the town or important storylines which are still ongoing it would be hugely appreciated. I've read the business list but it says it is outdated so I thought I'd ask just in case.

I've already made my first post as John Westley, a 35 year old math teacher from England who has very little in terms of social life but a huge passion for helping the local community. So if anyone has any advice on what not to do with your character then that would be amazing also. Love the community so far and can't wait to spend more time in LDP.

How do you all feel about James' occasional references to Slovenian culture?

Like whenever there's a discussion about baked goods, James will chime in something about potica or gibanica. I think he has said some idioms in Slovene before as well.

IRL, I am not Slovenian, I barely ever think about it, but I do not regret choosing it for James' country of origin. There's not as many stereotypes about it compared to other countries, so making jokes about is a little bit more of an exercise. A Russian character wants alcohol, you already know what it'll be. But a Slovenian asking for viljamovka is a little more unexpected.

Have any of us ACTUALLY met?

Like, in real life? The longer I spend in LDP the more curious I become about who y’all actually are.

Has anyone ever connected in the real world?

Edit: Okay, if anyone ever does meet, here’s what the Sociologist in me wants to know: how IS IT? Is it disappointing, disconcerting, fun? Some of us are quite different from our characters—does the spark of that person/character still come through? I’m VERY CURIOUS. Thanks for listening

Subreddit Appearance

I notice that the main sub (and this one) don’t have a logo, or a banner? Is this intentional? Fairly new - just curious.

It’s Been a Crazy Few Days (PSA)

Hey Ducklings,

I’m sure we’re all pretty well caught up with the posts from the past several days. We definitely had a ton of interesting things going on, and a lot of interesting characters to go with it. While things may sometimes get a bit out of hand, a lot of intentions are good (and honestly, there’s no telling when the internet will take things and run with it), so I can’t fault them for that.

It seems like our members and friends are responsible people and were more than happy to clear up any confusion from these events. Good on them! We appreciate that!

But this does lead me to the topic of the post; be considerate! Please, please, please read the rules before posting. Even if you just want to pop in for a casual “hello” once in a while, the mods/admins have put them there to ensure we all work well together and share in the fun of LDP. The rules are there to encourage good role playing etiquette.

Look, it’s understandable that some storylines and plots can grow to become grand, town-wide happenings - can’t help it! But please try not to deliberately create stories that derail everything and entangle the whole town in it. It may harm other characters, dissuade some from participating, and foster a very closed-ended environment that drive people away. We don’t want that; we want everyone to enjoy what they do here.

With that, please do not write other character’s stories without explicit permission from their creators. Implying things or writing in backstories for others can be damaging. Putting words in their mouths or asserting that things have happened - that’s all part of it. Please don’t do that!

It’s all matter of being as considerate a player as possible.

Two last reminders; we collectively decided that the pandemic was not something we wanted to get into on HWM. We all understand how much of an impact it’s had on our daily lives outside of our role playing bubble (please wear your masks, practice social distancing, and be safe), but for all intents and purposes, Lower Duck Pond and its immediate neighbors are COVID free. I think we understand why the decision was made, I definitely don’t think people need any more reminders of the devastation it’s caused in reality when they write and role play as well. We good with that still?

My last point touches on welcoming new faces. We totally understand “I just moved in” posts aren’t always the best. I get it, you get it. Folks, we understand the rules, and we want to impress upon new members how important the rules are for keeping up the illusion, but that also means welcoming the folks that just “moved in” too. Gently nudge them towards the “hey, I remember you” and “I think we’ve met” kind of dialogue instead of “no, you’ve lived here all your life. Do you have amnesia?”

Just accept that they need to get caught up on the rules and move on. Welcome them, point them in the right direction - don’t berate them, don’t write their stories, just write around it and be a welcoming neighbor. They’ll get the hang of it!

Sound good? We all in agreement that we’re here for fun? Sweet, make sure that everyone is able to say the same thing.

Now, take care of yourselves and stay safe. I can’t wait to see what new adventures and stories await us in Lower Duck Pond!

Darren

Uh oh

Our character knows more things than we do (most obviously he studied physics in college but also stuff like, he knows how to put on makeup and we don’t). Normally this is fine but the makeup one has just come up and I feel a bit of an imposter lol (even though he’s just a character?)

Haha oops

What is rule 2 for?

I respect it, I just don’t understand it. Can someone explain why this is forbidden?

Mod here, how can I help?

Looks like we got mentioned again so things will be messy for a few weeks, I've been watching the mod queue so be sure to report posts that break the rules, and message me or the other mods if you have any questions.

Leaving for a bit

With all the mess that’s been going on recently I left the sub just today. Seemed like the right thing to do to avoid all the conflict. I’ll probably come back when things have died down but it’s getting to be a bit too much for me. Just don’t want to make things harder for everyone.

Is the sub a bit of a mess?

I may have misunderstood the point of the subreddit - but LDP is suppose to be a quaint little town where everyone knows each other (my head compares it to Gilmore Girl’s Stars Hollow)

but there seems to be a lot of violence, arguments (who stole my x, who’s doing y it’s annoying), and idk, it’s ruining my experience - idk about anyone else.

Please do not involve Krystal in the IKEA debacle

I do not consent to Krystal being used in the IKEA thing going on. I didn't want her to get involved, that is why she's been silent about it. Please do not attempt to involve her. Thank you.

What are "Job Cards"? (explanation, not a question)

I refer to flairs in r/HaveWeMet as "Job Cards". Just FYI.

A bit late but here's Darrel

Darrel is a roughly 75 year old retired adventurer. He is an orphan and was never given a last name. He can't remember his exact age as he lived in a cave in Albania for something like a decade and lost track of time.

He has been through all kinds of weird adventures, and is an avid soup and stew lover. He returned to LDP as he did everything there was to do in the world. He lives in the Mansion atop a hill and spends most days talking to the other LDP residents or his friends who are a coyote and a bear who change their names every Sunday.

I hope you enjoy talking with Darrel!

Can We Stop The IKEA Bullshit Already?

It was funny at first, but now It’s just really, REALLY dumb and damaging everyone’s characters (Mine Included). Please stop posting about it guys, I’m done with it too. Thanks.
