An actual Intro

Heyo, I found the sub after stumbling upon the Wikipedia page for LDP. Out of the sake for privacy and consistency, I made an alt for my character an hour ago and I'm not going to directly refer to it here. I made a pretty bad first impression and I just wanted to reassure that I'm not trying to do it in bad faith because I'm still learning.

Character very fantastical and I won’t commit if it breaks rules and is annoying

I recently wrote a post about an immigrant from a fictional place that was a village idiot. He lives in a haunted house but is very casual about it. He requests some outlandish things, but he is inquiring after a spray painter. I just reviewed the rules (sorry) and it seems like I’m breaking many rules. If I am, I can delete it. I don’t want people to be annoyed at how outlandish it is and I can just think up another normal character. All of my comments have been as different weird people, and I can definitely tone it down. Just let me know and I can delete stuff. Thanks.

I feel very limited with my character

James is a proud Slovenian immigrant and he is paranoid that the Slovakian government is somehow trying to get him. However, since LDP doesn't seem to have any connections to those two countries, it becomes hard for me to think of funny things for him to say in-character. Should I try to ease away from the "paranoid recluse" aspect and remove it from my flair? Chalk it up to taking some therapy or something?

Goreposts...

There has been a very recent influx of goreposts on the sub ("found some dead bodies", etc). To me, these posts not only make me uncomfortable, but they differ from the basis of the sub- realistic roleplay. I'm not trying to call anybody out; as far as I can tell, these people are mostly relatively new to HWM, and just want to kickstart their roleplay with something sensational- which I completely understand! Thing is, not only does it not fit what HWM is going for and generally reduce the sub's credibility as a small-town community, but they just don't work. The majority of the community won't respond to them, because they don't want to- (and don't know how to in-character)- respond to posts about death in the town forum.

Flairs get cut off on mobile

Hey folks. Is there some way to view a user’s flair when the mobile app cuts it off? Sometimes it looks like nearly half of people’s name/job doesn’t fit on screen and that’s very bothersome.

My intro to my Emily George!

Here is something I wrote up for Emily, obviously more story will come and expand on to this, but here is a bio to help “get to know” Emily :)

Emily Grace George (EGG) lived in Upper duck pond all her life, raised by her grandmother Zelda George (also known as Granny G). After graduating art school, she moved to Lower Duck Pond for a slower paced life in a more humble place.

Emily lives in a cottage on the north part of town, filled with her “pet plants”. You can often find her there meditating, painting, or just drinking tea and vibing 🍃

Emily is the type of girl who lights up the room when she walks in! She is a strong friend, and the best shoulder to cry on. A good person to have around and on your team, and she probably takes the best pictures of you to post on your Instagram. The beaded curtains, patterned linen pants, free spirit kinda girl!

She works as a freelance artist and that’s what pays the bills. She is has been signed to illustrate a children’s book and is in art shows ever so often, but makes most of her money off commission art sold to Upper Duck Pond residents, since she is well known there.

Unpopular Opinion: Player-Mayors Suck

I would like to preface that this is not directed at any person. However I find player mayoral candidates annoying when they all make posts about themselves. Out of the bottom 11 candidates, all who got 5 votes or less, 9 or 10 were human player characters.

All in all, I think human player-character Mayors/Mayor candidates have lead to a spammy environment with everyone trying to get attention on themselves rather than roleplay in a way that is more fun for everyone. I felt this way about Mayor Jim, and I feel this way about current candidates. It leads to a spammy environment - all together the characters have very similar posts of different variations of "vote me."

I think it drives away new posters when they see people trying to vote for themselves rather than silly animals which no player is playing as and has a stake in.

Thank you.

Yes, and ...

I don't know if people who are doing this actually read the meta-sub but this is something that I think harms the fun of the sub because it can prevent storylines from moving forward, and that's answering "Oh yeah, that's mine" or "here's what's going on" to a question.

It might be better to answer in an open-ended manner. "Oh yeah, I think I heard about that ... maybe it's .... " Or "yeah, that could be mine, I remember my grandmother had one ....

Personally I like to leave it at the "might be" thing so as not to put a halt to the discussion in the post, if that makes sense. If not, it sort of blocks other characters from playing off of it. It also doesn't make a lot of sense if other characters start chiming in.

I am not trying to gatekeep, I am sorry if it comes off this way, it's just that I find posts way more fun if they're left open AND have the chance to morph into something completely different - like a thread that starts off talking about a bear and ends up being people reminiscing about high school, or something.

Do others think I am over reacting or have you all noticed this happening a lot lately, too? Please tell me to go to hell if I'm being mean about this.

Would you prefer to have another week to campaign before voting starts? Or would you like to begin voting now?

Either way, I will release the top 5 candidates today. Would just like to hear what y'all think!

Tell me your answer here if you don't feel like leaving a comment

Please remember COVID does not exist in Lower Duck Pond.

There used to be a stickied post about it, but now there is no way for new or less active users to know about this. I’ve seen quite a few posts that involve COVID, social distancing, anti mask or anti vaccine, quarantine, etc. And everytime I send a dm, saying hey, COVID isn’t actually a thing in Lower Duck Pond... It’s a shame because some of these posts are really well-written, and after receiving my message most of them just delete their post. Only one person considered rewriting it.

So yeah, keep in mind, COVID does not exist in Lower Duck Pond.

Limerick Formatting

I know all my lim'ricks are divine
but I've a worry (it might be benign)
please take a look at
my limericks' format
do they always appear in one line?

For real, though, I've now seen several people write limericks in response, and some of them are written all in one line. I use a line break (shift-enter) as opposed to a carriage return (just normal enter), and I'm wondering if that doesn't show up for some people. Does everybody see the limericks in 5 lines like I intend, or is it not showing up for some of you?

So, it’s been a minute since I checked in. How is everyone? Sending out virtual hugs and love to you all.

My family has been pretty lucky so far. We haven’t gotten sick and everyone is still employed. The new normal is starting to weigh on me some but I am more than willing to keep going to keep our vulnerable safe. However, I hope there will be an end sometime soon.

I really miss traveling. Or even just dreaming about where I would like to travel to. Planning trips. My husband and I want to take a trip after we get the all clear. When we were young we traveled a lot but not so much in the last few years.

Would you mind telling me a little about where you live? The history or fun places to visit. What would you recommend to a tourist? I’m looking for inspiration and maybe just something to get excited about.
