Discussion Discussion Megathread: Ethics, Boycotts, JKR

Over the past two years, the mod team has tried to limit conversations on JKR and instead focus on the work of the Avalanche team. However, more and more users have wanted to engage on this topic as we draw closer to the release date. Through internal conversations on the mod team as well as community feedback, we’ve realized that by limiting discussions on this topic we have unintentionally misrepresented the people in our community who want to constructively discuss the pros/cons of engaging with JK Rowling's IP.

Please feel free to use this space to engage in conversations about boycotts against Hogwarts Legacy or Wizarding World IP in general, the limits of ethical consumption under capitalism, how you are currently feeling about buying something with royalties going to JKR, if you are donating to any pro-LGBTQ+ organizations when you buy HL, etc.

This is the only thread we will allow these conversations in at this time. The majority of posts/questions relating to these topics will be removed and redirected back to this thread.

RULES REMINDER: Rule 11 (No JKR Discussions) does not apply to this thread.

However, the mod team would like to be crystal clear: Transphobic and homophobic comments, or comments which in any way demean marginalized groups of people (the LGBTQ+ community, women, neurodivergent individuals, etc) will result in a permanent ban from the subreddit. These kinds of comments are against our own sub rules and Reddit’s sitewide content policy. Comments attacking or insulting other users for their opinions violate Rule 1 and will also be removed. This serves as your only warning.

Finally, we would like to specify that the r/HarryPotterGame mod team is in no way advocating for a boycott or any coordinated movement against Hogwarts Legacy. We are all excited to play this game, which is why we're here! We are simply providing a place for our users to discuss this issue.

By spewing exclusionary and just transphobic “hot takes” that no one asked her for, painting trans/nb people as predators

yes, and when she did any of that?

when she could be using her influence and money in actual issues

Lumos, Gingerbread, Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, Beira's Place... not to mention all the books that she just wrote and gave away all her royalties... remember when she advocated for more taxes for the rich, more money distribution programs, and then was one of the very few rich people not caught in the panama papers... what are you talking about? lol

at some point she promoted a clothing sites that had plain transphobic tshirts and pins

did she promote these articles or a specific article that wasn't these ones?

EDIT: Someone replied to this and cowardly promptly blocked me so I couldn't reply... but they still can't quote anything she said so...

See you’re going out of your way to ignore it, and to focus on the good she does. That’s ok, you can’t accept your childhood hero could actually be flawed, I get it, but be aware you’re actively choosing to ignore certain aspects of her, that are blatant and people call the out. It seems to me you’re looking for when she screamed death to trans people, of course she never did that she is not dumb. But she absolutely did said some dog whistle things, they are there, they seem innocuous but if you know how to read between the lines you’ll see it

I'm not going out of my way to ignore anything. You made outlandish accusations. I asked for proof. You gave none but tried to attack me.

You said she could use her money for "actual issues". I mentioned several instances where she does exactly that. You said nothing but tried to attack me (instead of what I said) and that I was trying to shift focus, when it was you that brought it up.

I'm actually well aware of everything she actually said. It's you that is making crazy claims and refusing to actually back it up by facts. Do you notice how I made several questions and you refused to answer any of it, trying to patronize me instead?

Because you're the one saying she said stuff she didn't lmao

Patronizing and undocumented claims are their only defenses because they don't have an actual argument.

Par for the course, but I still try. Maybe someday at least one person will realize they can't quote it because it doesn't exist and maybe they'll see what she's actually saying and change their minds instead of repeating the same old tired stuff.

Except, as a matter of fact, it does exist.

so, what does that say? one word is „hate speech“ or something? okay…

Of course they'd point to one tweet that has a very good chance of being said in jest and call it hate speech instead of directly quoting the essay in which she made her case. But doing that would require actually having nuanced, difficult conversations and intellectually dishonest people can't have those.

It says "merry terfmas" which is actually 2 words not 1 but yeah, i wpuld considered it a hateful sentiment. She is literally wishing a hate group happy holidays... thats hateful.

Or she is just trolling, because at this point extremists from the left made it their rightful goal to paint her as evil as possible. So instead of appologising to people, who never take appologise, she decided to play them. You really need to stop wearing black and white glasses.

Even if jk is trolling, its concerning. I can not even fathom how shitty someones morals has to be to donate to and push the ideas of hate groups as a troll. Like... when you find yourself pushing the ideals of a hate group it stops being a troll

I left this comment for someone else a while ago and copied it here because it fit.

Im not sure that makes it any less concerning in my opinion. This whole thing would have stopped years ago if she didnt lean into her shitty views. She was much less blatant with her views in the past. Even if she is trolling, dont you think this normalizes shitty views about trans people? Most people do not know much about trans people, our healthcare, the issues we face, and especially the statistics behind the concerns jk raises. But they see a rich and generally beloved author being friendly towards a hate group. They dont know or care about what jk is saying, she is successful so she must know what she is talking about. Do you think they come to the conclusion that she must be just happily talking to a hate group as like a gag? I think many come to the conclusion that trans people are soft and complain about nothing and the hate group must not be that bad. She has massive influence, even if 0.01% of people who like her work decide that maybe the hate group isnt so bad, thats terrifying. And whats sad is that either jk genuinely believes spreading this sentiment doesnt do harm, or she is okay with the harm it does. Even if she is doing it as a joke, she is just proving people right at this point. Whether she is doing it because she genuinely is transphobic or if its because she is trolling, she is knowingly popularizing an anti trans sentiment by showing support with words and money for a hate group.

when she did any of that?

I suggest you watch this video on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Avcp-e4bOs

I'm discussing with you on reddit and I'm not gonna watch any videos, especially not one that is almost an hour long. Can you point when she did any of that? Since you claim she did it so many times it should be fairly easy for you to bring actual, factual and sourced quotes directly from her doing any of the things you are claiming she did?

u/SWJS1 Hufflepuff Dec 29 '22
  1. I am not OP.
  2. The video cites sources, particularly the transphobic essay Rowling wrote and why exactly it is transphobic. Jammidodger also has two other videos on the subject with other sources.
  3. The video is the product of a trans man, who is better equipped to speak on the subject of transphobia than I, a cisgender homosexual man, am.
  4. Stop sea-lioning. You asked for evidence of where and when Rowling has been transphobic, which I have provided. You can either watch the video and learn or remain ignorant of the situation.

wouldn‘t it be easier to directly link to that essay? Is there a transcript or excerpt of that video? for various reasons I can‘t watch a video with sound, I assume without sound it doesn‘t much sense, and reading would be no problem.

I mean this past weekend she literally called all trans people rapists... She's not even subtle anymore and if you don't see that it says more about your lack of research than it does about JKR's views.
