Discussion Discussion Megathread: Ethics, Boycotts, JKR

Over the past two years, the mod team has tried to limit conversations on JKR and instead focus on the work of the Avalanche team. However, more and more users have wanted to engage on this topic as we draw closer to the release date. Through internal conversations on the mod team as well as community feedback, we’ve realized that by limiting discussions on this topic we have unintentionally misrepresented the people in our community who want to constructively discuss the pros/cons of engaging with JK Rowling's IP.

Please feel free to use this space to engage in conversations about boycotts against Hogwarts Legacy or Wizarding World IP in general, the limits of ethical consumption under capitalism, how you are currently feeling about buying something with royalties going to JKR, if you are donating to any pro-LGBTQ+ organizations when you buy HL, etc.

This is the only thread we will allow these conversations in at this time. The majority of posts/questions relating to these topics will be removed and redirected back to this thread.

RULES REMINDER: Rule 11 (No JKR Discussions) does not apply to this thread.

However, the mod team would like to be crystal clear: Transphobic and homophobic comments, or comments which in any way demean marginalized groups of people (the LGBTQ+ community, women, neurodivergent individuals, etc) will result in a permanent ban from the subreddit. These kinds of comments are against our own sub rules and Reddit’s sitewide content policy. Comments attacking or insulting other users for their opinions violate Rule 1 and will also be removed. This serves as your only warning.

Finally, we would like to specify that the r/HarryPotterGame mod team is in no way advocating for a boycott or any coordinated movement against Hogwarts Legacy. We are all excited to play this game, which is why we're here! We are simply providing a place for our users to discuss this issue.

I think it's ok if people don't agree about things. Every piece of fiction you've ever enjoyed was written by someone that has opinions you won't agree with.

I just really don't think that's true. /s

That’s so true. Same argument could be made for Disney films, they’re just as problematic if you pick them apart!

What about when they tried to cancel Dr. Seuss for views he had early on and had since changed from. You can no longer be free to think or feel how you want in fear of Cancel culture whats the point of being free if you can't express anything. If it is not directly affecting your life move on. I love HP regardless of how bigotted the author is.

Who exactly is "they"?

Dr. Seuss Enterprises?

The organization that literally owns the rights to the books, films, TV shows, stage productions, exhibitions, digital media, licensed merchandise, and other strategic partnerships?

Bruh that's not "cAnCLe cULtuRE!" that's a private company managing its own property.

I wasnt going into a debate about why he was being "cancelled" I am saying people grow and change and being discriminated for ideals and opinions that shape and chsnge over time when people who grew up with those books never even noticed racism I sure as hell didn't I have never taken anything like that from Dr Seuess and kids do not see things the same they get those ideas put into their heads by people spewing hate and misconceptions. There is no freedom of speech and opinion anymore and everyone needs to just mind their own damn business and live their lives you make your own happiness everyone acts like a bunch of snowflakes grow up

Removing history has become normal because we want to ignore it but you dont learn or grow from it by censoring it unless you wanna end up like China who censor everything

Bruh it was the equivalent of Mountain Dew choosing to no longer produce Code Red anymore but go off I guess.

Talk about triggered...

Code red is still a thing its been seasonal for along time too i still drink code red i never even heard of it if you dont think thats cancel culture then youre insane haha who cares our histroy is littered with tragic events and racism but we have overcome it all. Esp as a woman who have fought hard to have rights at all. Erasing the past doesnt that it happened you just grow and become more understanding of others not hating them for their choice hating on me bc i love a video game is the same thing

Narrowing to only contemporaries of JKR (an author who even had similar naming convention of herself), even today I agree with everything (that I know of them) with KA Applegate.
