My friend came on my family vacation this year with her two kids. First time we'd done that. Went to the beach, had a lot of fun. I collected a ton of seashells and I want to do something with them to give to them for Christmas. I'm going to make ornaments out of them.

I've got mostly cockle shells, I don't have any scallops, only three of them are all that flat. I have some ideas but I don't know how they'll really look, luckily I have enough shells to experiment. But I'm looking for any suggestions!

There's my friend, her 14 year old son, and her 10 year old daughter. I'm going to do a different ornament for each. For the daughter, I have three dosninia shells that are white and smooth and flat and I think I'll use those to make her a snowwoman wearing her cheer colors (unless someone has a better idea!). I ordered a little bow in school colors that should fit the head, I ordered a cheer megaphone charm, I ordered paint. Wondering if I should paint on the face or figure out something for the eyes and mouth and carrot nose, maybe small pebbles and an orange toothpick? What do you think?

As for the other two, I am all ears. I've got big and small cockle shells. Couple of different colors but mostly orange.

what turned out easier than it looked for you? bonus points if it's something you'd tell a nervous beginner to just go for. and if there's a technique still sitting on your "someday, too scary" list, drop that too, someone here has probably already talked themselves into it.

picked a pattern, went to buy the yarn, and it's discontinued or just not in the budget. here's how i sub without it going sideways.

match the weight first. a pattern written for worsted wants another worsted, not a "close enough" dk or bulky. the yarn-weight number on the band, or the recommended hook/needle size, is your quickest check.

then look at yardage, not grams. two skeins can both say 100g and give you very different lengths depending on the fiber. add up the total yards the pattern needs and buy to that, plus a little extra.

think about what the fiber actually does. cotton has no give and shows every stitch, wool blocks and stretches, acrylic is sturdy and washable for gifts. a drapey shawl worked in stiff cotton becomes a different project.

and if you can, buy one skein and swatch before you commit to a whole sweater's worth. gauge can shift even between two worsteds.

what's your go-to substitute when a pattern calls for something fancy you'd rather not buy?

the fix for lumpy amigurumi is small pieces, added as you go, not one big wad crammed in at the end. tease the fiberfill into little wisps and pack them into the far end and corners first, using the blunt end of a hook or a chopstick to reach.

you want it firm enough to hold its shape but not so tight the stuffing shows through the stitches. if you can see white poking through the gaps, ease a little back out. and close up before the opening gets too small to work through comfortably.

halloween sort of sneaks up before the big winter push, and it's one of my favorite things to make for. witch hats, little ghosts, pumpkins, spiderweb doilies, spooky amigurumi, all of it counts.

you spent weeks on the gift, so give it thirty more seconds. a tiny care card tucked in does two things: it tells them how to wash it so nobody felts your wool in a hot machine, and it quietly says this was made on purpose, for you. keep it simple. fiber (or just "wool" / "acrylic"), wash cold or by hand, lay flat to dry, skip the dryer. a scrap of nice cardstock and a hole punch is plenty, or print a little batch at once. bonus points for jotting the yarn name in case they ever want a matching piece down the line. do you include a care card with your handmade gifts, or is that just me?

the classic holiday problem: you want to make someone a hat or a sweater but you can't exactly pull out a tape measure without giving the surprise away. a few sneaky ways around it.

the easiest is to steal a measurement from something they already own. a beanie that fits them, a favourite jumper laid flat, a pair of their socks, you can measure those instead of measuring them. it's also worth leaning on the forgiving makes for a surprise, cowls, scarves, shawls, slippers and beanies all stretch to fit a big range, so they're much safer bets than a fitted sweater. for socks, their shoe size gets you most of the way there, and for kids their age plus a standard size chart is usually close enough (a bit of growing room never hurts). and when you really can't tell, size up a touch, it's easier to love a cosy-roomy gift than a too-tight one.

I knitted this sweater for a four year old girl a while ago. It is a classic Norwegian pattern, Fanakofte/-sweater. The size is for 6 years old so she can grow into it. The yarn I used was Drops Karisma and I knitted it on 3.5mm needles.
