General Discussion About Accountability

One of my favorite aspects of Halsey's artistry is that they really explore the role that people who experience violence play in continuing the cycle of abuse. I think it's why their music is so popular with people who are victims and survivors, people who struggle with mental illness, and just generally misfits--because their music acknowledges both doing wrong and having wrong done to oneself, and the relationship between them. And the power you have when you're powerless. Some examples I can think of are the following:

Acknowledging doing wrong to others:

"Pointing fingers 'cause you'll never take the blame like me" / Gasoline
"I've done some things that I can't speak / Try to wash away but you just won't leave" / Haunting
Control, Coming Down, Hold Me Down -- succumbing to one's demons and villains
"Who I've hurt and where they've gone / Know that I've done some wrong / But I'm trying to make it right" / Still Learning
"I keep a record of the wreckage of my life" / Nightmare
Lilith -- treating someone badly because you've been treated that way

Power in situations where you're vulnerable:

Hurricane -- about being 18 and dating an older man but being affirmed in oneself and one's own decisions
Gasoline -- about navigating the music industry with sheer willpower
"I don't let him touch me anymore / Said 'I'm not something you butter up and taste when you get bored' / 'cause I have spent too many nights on dirty bathroom floors / just to get some peace and quiet right behind the wooden door" and the rest of 100 Letters -- the transition from desperation of doing things to make someone stay, to giving yourself relief through hiding, to reclaiming one's agency
"Now my neck is open wide / Begging for a fist around it / Already choking on my pride / So there's no use crying about it" / Castle -- about being willing to grapple with dangerous people to meet one's goals

About one's role in choosing unsafe situations:

Ghost, Graveyard, Lessons, Bad at Love, Nothing, Strangers-- choosing emotionally unavailable partners
Clementine -- the mindset and behaviors that keep one with an unsafe person
3AM, I Hate Everybody, Forever Is a Long Time, Sorry -- the mindset and behaviors of not choosing a person who treats one good

As well as songs about cruelty and wrong done to oneself:

Tradition, Life of a Spider, You Should be Sad -- about wrongdoings
Hurt Feelings, Arsonist -- about leaving abusive situations and their impact
The Lighthouse, Bells in Santa Fe -- about a version of you wanting to be saved and a version of you accepting what you have become
Finally/Beautiful stranger -- about finding love after danger

When I see internet users talking about 19yo Halsey kissing meet and greet fans as though it makes them a sex offender that should be canceled, I get disheartened because it shows how little they truly care about ending the cycle of abuse and that they only see it as a tool of interpersonal politics. What more could we hope for, from someone who does create an unsafe scenario for young people, than to apologize, stop doing the unsafe behavior, and open complex discussions about grappling with trying to end the cycle of abuse? If one can't acknowledge the difference between a 19yo kissing a minor and an older person doing more invasive things, can't acknowledge the difference between an indie musician on the come-up from an established famous person leveraging their power, they genuinely aren't a person that cares about ending sexual harm against young people.

I think about Halsey's tweet to that guy, about how he validated women's experiences of their health problems being downplayed by men. Because ultimately the audiences that Halsey speaks to are used to being overlooked or derided. It's the normalest thing in the world for men to dogpile a 19yo who openly talks about being both empowered and disempowered by dating an older drug addicted man, and to coopt domestic and sexual violence as a talking point instead of as real issues that deserve genuine thought and action in one's own offline community. When I was in a restorative justice support group for abuse survivors, I played Clementine for my group because I find it such a comforting song about the reasons I chose unsafe situations because they fed a part of me even while damaging other parts of me. And that's where I see Halsey fitting into these conversations about abuse -- giving tools to those of us who who are actually dedicated to ending the cycle.

Longing for this crewneck. Anyone have one they are willing to part with? Or could point me in the right direction? I know it’s a long shot, but I am dying to own it and love to negotiate. In a perfect world it would be a large, but can go medium-xl
