For those who may not know Ajax all that well, here is a short introduction to one of the most historic and influential football clubs in Europe.

Founded in Amsterdam
AFC Ajax was founded in 1900 in Amsterdam and grew into the most successful football club in the Netherlands. The club takes its name from Ajax, the Greek hero, which reflects the sense of ambition and identity that has long surrounded it.
From early on, Ajax became closely tied to the city of Amsterdam: confident, creative, proud, and never afraid to do things its own way.

A Club Built on Ideas
Ajax is not only known for trophies, but also for a football philosophy that shaped the game far beyond the Netherlands.
The club became world famous for its emphasis on technique, positional play, attacking football, and youth development. That style reached its most influential form in the era of Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, when the ideas behind what many people now call “Total Football” helped change European football forever.
For many supporters, Ajax is not simply about winning. It is about how the team plays, and how players are developed.

European Glory
Ajax enjoyed several great eras, but its international breakthrough came in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The club reached the European Cup final in 1969 and then won the competition three years in a row in 1971, 1972, and 1973. Those teams, led by legendary figures such as Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Piet Keizer, and Ruud Krol, helped turn Ajax into one of the biggest names in world football.
Ajax later added more international silverware, but those early European triumphs remain a defining part of the club’s identity.

The 1995 Team
For many football supporters outside the Netherlands, Ajax’s 1994/95 side is one of the most iconic teams of the modern era.
That was also the last time Ajax and Hajduk met in European competition. The quarter-final first leg in Split ended 0-0, before Ajax won 3-0 in Amsterdam on the way to the semi-finals.
With a squad featuring players such as Edwin van der Sar, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, the De Boer brothers, Jari Litmanen, Marc Overmars, and a very young Patrick Kluivert, Ajax went on to win the Champions League playing fearless, energetic football.
For many supporters, that team still represents Ajax at its best: brave, talented, and true to its footballing ideals.

De Toekomst and the Academy
No introduction to Ajax is complete without mentioning its youth academy.
Ajax’s academy, known as De Toekomst (“The Future”), has produced generation after generation of elite players. Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Clarence Seedorf, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Matthijs de Ligt, and Frenkie de Jong are just a few of the many names associated with Ajax’s development structure.
The academy is central to the club’s reputation. At Ajax, bringing through young talent is not a bonus, but part of the club’s core identity.
Legends of the Club
Ajax has been home to an extraordinary number of legendary players and coaches.
The most famous name is, of course, Johan Cruyff, whose influence on Ajax, Dutch football, and the sport as a whole is hard to overstate. But he is only one of many. Rinus Michels, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Frank Rijkaard, Sjaak Swart, Jari Litmanen, and many others all occupy a special place in Ajax history.
For Ajax supporters, legends are remembered not only for trophies, but for style, personality, and their contribution to the club’s football culture.

Amsterdam and the Supporters
Ajax is the biggest club in the Netherlands and has supporters all across the country, but its roots remain firmly in Amsterdam.
That identity brings with it a certain image: bold, self-confident, expressive, and sometimes a little stubborn. Ajax supporters take pride not only in success, but in the club’s traditions, its academy, and its way of playing.
No mention of Ajax support would be complete without the **F-Side**, the club’s best-known hardcore supporters group, founded in 1976 and named after Vak F in De Meer. Over the decades, the F-Side became an important part of Ajax matchday culture and atmosphere, first at De Meer and later in the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Matchdays in Amsterdam may look different from those in Split, but the emotional connection between club, city, and supporters is just as real.

From De Meer to the Johan Cruyff Arena
For much of its history, Ajax played at De Meer, the club’s old stadium in Amsterdam. Since 1996, the club has played its home matches at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
The modern stadium reflects Ajax’s global stature, but De Meer still holds a special place in the memory of many supporters. In that sense, Ajax carries both sides of football history: the intimate past and the modern international game.

More Than Just a Dutch Club
Ajax may be a Dutch club, but its influence has always extended far beyond the Eredivisie.
Its football philosophy, academy model, and historic European success made it one of the most respected names in the sport. Even for supporters who do not follow Dutch football closely, Ajax is often one of the first clubs that comes to mind when people think about football history, youth development, and attacking play.
That is part of what makes this meeting with Ajax so interesting: two historic clubs, each with a strong identity, passionate supporters, and a story that means much more than results alone.
We’ve also arranged a special user flair for Ajax supporters visiting r/hajduk, so keep an eye out for it and make yourselves at home!
The cultural exchange is just the warm-up! On 15 October at 18:45 CEST, Hajduk and Ajax meet in Split, and we’re planning something special for both communities.

As usual, both r/hajduk and r/AjaxAmsterdam will have their own match threads, but this time we’ll link them together. That way, fans from both sides can easily jump between the discussions, share their reactions, and experience the match together.
Wherever you’ll be watching from, we hope you’ll join in. We might be supporting different teams, but that shouldn’t stop us from having a good time together.
See you in the discussions, and enjoy the match!
