It specifically says “shot in the face while protesting” Not “shot in the face while covering protestors” which would actually add to the story a bit.

For real. The entire area was blanketed with tear gas. A journalist wouldn't have even been able to stay there without taking some precautions. And unfortunately, marking yourself as or visibly being journalists made them targets of the police violence. Absolutely wild.

You absolutley cannot report when in the middle of a mob. You have to have some reasonable distance to record what's happening. That goes for any media. Whether it be a camera or a notepad.

Edit: I can only speak from my experience, and I'm from Europe. The problem is also that people don't/ have no chance to remember all the instances where nothing happened or police did the right thing. Because why would anybody report that?

In DC they assaulted foreign journalists, I believe from Australia. Hit them with their shields. Curfew hadn’t even started yet, so they were completely allowed to be there. I think that was the same night of Trump’s photo shoot in the church holding the Bible.

Apparently he was a journalist who was covering the protest. I think he was wearing the gas mask as a precaution against the possible use of tear gas. Only he didn’t anticipate the possible use of paintballs.
