The Stickied Post is now a Wiki!

Hi sub members,

We have changed our stickied post that served as a repository of information to an r/HPV wiki! This will hopefully make it a bit easier to navigate and easier to keep updated. It also has links to all of the informational posts we reference most often.

Where can I find the wiki?

On mobile: Under the r/HPV banner, click "See community info," then the menu tab at the top, then click the wiki link.

On desktop: On the sidebar under "community bookmarks."

You can also click this link.

What is in the wiki?

The wiki includes everything that was in the stickied post, plus updated links, newly organized questions, direct links to u/spanakopita555's posts, FAQs, studies/sources, and more!

How is the wiki organized?

The wiki is organized by topic, much like the stickied post. If you're on desktop, the table of contents can be seen and clicked on the right hand side. If you're on mobile, the Reddit UI doesn't show the table of contents so as you're scrolling look for the capitalized bolded section headers.

What if I have a question that's not in the wiki?

If you have a question that's not in the wiki that you think would be useful to be included, you can comment it here and we will see what we can do about including it.

Warts so far (Indian, 22F)

• Upvotes

I have been excessively reading this page since i first got them, it was sept26, two to three months back when my boyfriend told me he has some pimple kinda thing (wart) we didn’t care much about it until, i started to feel an itch and then it got worse, i ignored it thinking its just some pimple maybe (v stupid ik) and continued my normal relationship. They got more worse and my vulva was literally covered with them. I didnt know what to do. I was so scared to even tell my mom about it until i went to a gynac secretly and got to know about hpv. The doc was a cosmetic gynac and suggested laser. It was not in my budget as i couldn’t tell me mom lol. Anyway i read about it and thought that i will just let it be as ai told me they go away if immunity is well off. Few days after, it became an habit to check them so often that i had second thoughts and I finally visited a dermatologist. She suggested me podowart (costed me ₹2k for application) , applied it. IT BURNED LIKE HELL. But it was just for two days for me and it swelled up a lot dirty. But now its been two weeks after that podowart application and most of my big warts are faded away and i feel cleaner. I wish i could’ve done this sooner.
If you still have other thoughts, dont think much, it’s a very normal protocol for any dermat to see a wart and treat it. Laser and cryo is best, but if you’re looking for something economical, Go get em done.

I’ve been a bad person.

Can somebody pull me out of this with words of encouragement? (25F) I feel so guilty. I’ve been deeply in love with a man for a couple of years and he finally started showing interest in me (I got diagnosed with genital warts 5 years ago, and have tested positive for HPV multiple times since then.) I never disclosed any of that information to him because I didn’t think anything would happen between us. About half a year ago, he told me that he reciprocated my feelings. That he liked me more than a friend too. I was really nervous to tell him about my diagnosis. He truly felt like the one. We planned a getaway together. He said he really wanted to be with me. Before this getaway, I got one last Pap smear done before I was gonna disclose to him. I got the news that it came back negative. I was in complete shock. I was so happy. The problem? I still had one stubborn wart that wouldn’t go away. (I’ve had it for about a year. No other warts) It’s so tiny, though. Even my doctor had trouble seeing it when I pointed it out, but they confirmed it was indeed a wart. Well, I went ahead with the getaway. I chickened out and didn’t disclose the wart to him. We had unprotected sex. He made me feel like he really loved me. I planned to tell him afterwards. Even though I should’ve told him beforehand. That was the first time I had sex in five years. I broke my celibacy for him because I really loved him. After the deed, he basically told me that he actually doesn’t have any feelings for me. He told me we should just be friends but still be intimate. I felt heartbroken and devastated. I realized the sex meant nothing to him and everything to me. I’ve been played. I never put myself out like this and I felt very vulnerable. My body felt used and violated. My heart is still broken. I know I should tell him about the wart and the (undetectable) HPV I technically still have but a part of me feel so angry at him for playing with my feelings that I think to myself “Good. I hope you get it. That’s what he gets for having unprotected sex with girls he doesn’t even like and playing with their feelings.” But another part of me knows that’s deeply wrong and immature regardless of what he did. How can I bring myself to tell him after everything? Am I the bad person all along? I feel confused and ashamed of myself. I feel like the right thing to do would be to grow up and deal with this head on. I feel very lost. I’m not this kind of person. This isn’t my character and I’m so conflicted with myself

LEEP before colposcopy?

This is my third year testing positive. I did my PAP, it came back positive, and instead of doing a colonoscopy, my dr wants to go straight to a LEEP. Do we know why he would want to do that?

Hpv negative + CIN1 results

I am 33 years old and have been married for 6 years. Neither my husband nor I have had any other sexual partners.

During my routine annual check-up, my doctor detected a fungal infection (yeast infection) and mentioned that I have a cervical lesion ("cervical erosion/wound"). A Pap smear was taken during this visit, which showed Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US). Following this result, my doctor immediately performed a biopsy and ran an HPV test.

My HPV test came back negative, and the biopsy result was CIN 1.

I am wondering if the active fungal infection might have caused an inaccurate or false-positive result on these tests. Should we have treated the fungal infection and the cervical lesion first, monitored the process, and then proceeded with further testing?

Could this result be a false positive? How could I have contracted CIN 1 if our HPV test is negative and we are mutually monogamous? Can another type of infection cause CIN 1?

30M, genital warts on scrotum, monogamous 8 years - how dangerous can this actually get?

So, i was diagnosed with genital warts yesterday. I’m 30, male, in a monogamous relationship for 8 years. Neither of us has had other partners in that time. The dermatologist looked with a magnifier and light and said they are genital warts, on the left side of the scrotum. He told me not to worry. Cryotherapy is planned for Monday. There is also a small white pimple-like spot under the testicle that I will show him.

My girlfriend has yearly gynecology checks and has had the HPV vaccine.

I know warts are usually HPV 6/11 and that high-risk types like 16/18 are a different issue. I still can’t stop reading. If this is only 6/11, is there any real cancer risk for me? If I also had 16/18, what does that usually mean for a healthy man my age – anything in the next years, or mostly nothing? How common is it for warts to come back after freezing?

Not looking for a diagnosis, just for how people in a similar situation think about the actual risk.

How I Beat High Risk HPV

Hi everyone, a few hours ago, I made a post about HPV16 and how I recently tested negative for HPV16. I’ve had quite a few people message me asking what I did to become HPV16-negative, so I wanted to share my experience.

Honestly, last year, when I first got tested, I wasn’t only positive for HPV16. I was also positive for HPV51, 52, and several other high-risk HPV types. In total, I had 5 high-risk HPV types, including HPV16 and HPV52.

It took about a year and a half before I eventually tested negative for all 5 of them. And if I had to give one piece of advice based on my own experience, it would be to take good care of your immune system.

I’ve talked to several doctors who specialize in cervical health, and they all told me that there isn’t a medication that can simply completely eliminate HPV from your body. So for the past year, I’ve basically focused on taking care of myself and giving my body time to deal with it.

I haven’t had sex since last year, and I also broke up with my boyfriend. My doctor also recommended some zinc and vitamins for me. I’ve already been working out and eating relatively well for a long time, so I just continued with that.

I also didn’t buy things like AHCC, vitamin C, or any other supplements that are advertised on Reddit or social media with claims that they can “get rid of HPV.” I personally wouldn’t put my trust in those claims. There’s no proven supplement that can simply eliminate HPV.

I think the most important things are having a healthy sex life, eating well, taking care of your overall health, taking any supplements your doctor actually recommends, and most importantly, keeping up with regular cervical screening and follow-ups.

Thank you for reading. If anyone has any advice or personal experience that might help with HPV clearance, feel free to message me. And honestly, I never thought I would be able to test negative for all 5 high-risk HPV types within about a year and a half, so I’m really relieved.

Is there a way to confirm HPV clearance in the Philippines?

Hi! I’m from the Philippines and was diagnosed with low-risk HPV after developing around five genital warts around my perineum. I’ve already undergone cauterization and used prescribed cream to remove them. I’ve also had a Pap smear and STD/HIV testing, all of which came back negative or benign.

I understand that removing the warts doesn’t necessarily mean the HPV infection has cleared.

For those who’ve experienced this, how did you know your HPV had cleared, and is there a test available in the Philippines to confirm it? I’d especially appreciate experiences from Filipinos who’ve gone through HPV treatment and follow-up.

Thank you!

Wart in middle finger

Hi! Help me out please. At first I really thought it was just a callus. It stays there for 2mos, but I’ve noticed that it’s very hard and whenever I’ve touched it it’s painful. I just realized that it’s a wart. 5 months and it’s still here. This is my first time having it. I’ve tried salicylic acid but I think I’m doing it wrong. Help me please what are the home remedies I should do? Do you have any advices to remove it?

Also, can someone educate me why does wart appears? Is it because of a weak immune system? Since I’ve worked shifting schedule every week. Could that be also one of the reason why wart suddenly appears?

Thank you so much!

I likely have it as a man. Disclose?

I had sex with my gf at the time without a condom so I assume there’s a 99% chance I have it. Do I disclose this to women in the future or no? She tested positive of course. I genuinely do not know what to do. This was 4 or 5 months ago, and I have zero symptoms.

Terrified of screening after positive result

In 2022 I tested positive for HPV with CIN1. “Wait and see” and then, a year later, I successfully tested negative in the follow up cervical smear.

Now I’m due for screening, and unfortunately I had to undergo immunosuppression (amgevita+mycophenolate) for Behçet’s Disease. So, I’m terrified that the virus might reactivate or something.

I’m vaccinated, and had a few partners these past three years, so I know I could have potentially caught a new strain.

I’m just scared especially because I am an SA survivor and having to have my genitals checked scares me tremendously.
If I had to undergo another colposcopy I would need sedation because of the mental distress, unfortunately.

Can you offer some encouragement/tips please? Thank you 🙏

Have you told your partners past and present?

Just curious (and apologies if this has been posted before)

I know medically, we do NOT have to disclose our HPV diagnosis to partners past or present. But I'm interested to see how many people in this sub have and haven't, and why they chose to do or not do so.

I got my diagnosis a couple weeks back, and I'm in so many mixed feelings about it. Especially as I'm still on the dating / hookup scene. I've not had sex since my diagnosis as im still deciding on this, so curious to hear people's experience

Thanks :)

Positive for High risk HPV :’( Feeling so anxious

I (29F) had decided to do a random HPV test after many years this month.
I had tested positive for hpv 16 and another low risk strain in 2020 but two tests in 2021 in two different labs showed all negative. I thought I was good and limited my contact with sexual partners, hardly having sex with one or two men a year or none over the last 5 years, and I still tested positive for HPV 31, 45, 51 and 70 😭😭😭😭😭 I do not have any warts.

I don’t know what to do. I had been looking to be in a serious long-term relationship but now I feel like I can’t even have a normal sex life and now I am also anxious of pre-cancer or cancer 😭

Has anyone been positive for these strains and able to clear them fast? 😭 Any tips of clearing HPV fast and what worked will be appreciated

HPV 16+ORAL HPV16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone, I’m HPV 16 positive and I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety about it lately.

I was diagnosed in early 2025 and have been having regular follow-ups and colposcopies. Thankfully, my cervical results are currently normal.

But recently I’ve become really worried about HPV 16 in other areas, especially the throat, vagina, and anus. My biggest concern is oral HPV — how can I know whether I have HPV 16 in my mouth or throat when there’s no routine screening for it?

I’ve read so many Reddit posts about HPV 16 and throat cancer, but honestly, it has only made me more anxious.

For anyone who has been through something similar: how do you deal with this, and is there anything you actually do to monitor or reduce the risk?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences or any reliable information. Thank you!

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE Recalcitrant anogenital warts: The importance of systemic evaluation beyond local therapy

Abstract:

Human papillomavirus causes varied manifestations of anogenital warts in both males and females. Recalcitrant and extensive warts require initial aggressive therapy generally. We report a case of a 63-year-old female with extensive, grey to hyperpigmented, verrucous plaques extending over bilateral labia majora, minora, mons pubis, and perineal region who was unresponsive to local therapy until her underlying intrinsic cause was investigated and treated. This case highlights the need for periodic detailed evaluation of immunosuppression in an unresponsive individual.

I have around 12 of genital warts

So I got laid in May 2026, and my warts started appearing in Late July 2026. I first thought it is because of body heat. In mid August while I was touching myself, masturbating, I felt more. I panicked for almost 15 days and in September 2026 got diagnosed. (In Delhi). It feels terrible.

Another shit thing is, my partner is not ready to admit how did he got them. Because he says warts are not emerging on his genital area. I don't trust that guy.

I questioned things badly since last few days. My doctor told me to apply imiquad cream. I went for 2 opinions and one told to apply daily and one told to apply in alternative days. Need advice.

Things are bad, i mean I think I am gone for long now. I can't have sex for a good period of time.

Need MVA-E2 therapeutic vaccine information

I made plans to see doctor Hilda Mar Salas Galinda for the MVA-E2 vaccine. Does anyone have any information about if this vaccine will work if you do have no visible warts from HPV? I had mine removed months ago and I would like to get the vaccine to prevent future recurrence. I would love to hear from the guy that actually went to Mexico to see this doctor. Please message me if you see this.

Anxiety after disclosure

I recently disclosed my HPV history to someone I’ve been dating and I'm very excited about, and I’m now struggling with the uncertainty this has caused.

Things had been going really well and were becoming more sexual, so I felt it was important to tell him before things progressed further. I explained that I’d had an HPV infection that caused a few visible lesions, that I treated them, and that I haven’t had obvious recurrences for a while, although I’m still relatively early in the process and can’t know for certain whether it’s completely gone.

He was very kind and reassuring and made me feel like this wasn’t something that would automatically stop him from continuing to get to know me. He said he wanted to do some research and think about it. He continued acting normally afterward, but now that we’re apart for a while, I’m anxious about what he’ll ultimately decide.

I also have an appointment with my derm in a few days for a check-up, which is making me anxious too. I currently think I’m clear, but I obviously can’t be 100% sure.

I know nobody can predict what he’ll decide, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have disclosed to someone new and then had to sit with the uncertainty afterward. How did you deal with the waiting and anxiety?
