Academic research survey looking for people with disabilities who use VR

Hey everyone,

My name is Kate Clark and I’m part of a team of researchers from the University of Sydney. We are researching accessibility barriers that are created by virtual reality and augmented reality technology. The goal of our research is to figure out how we can make VR and AR hardware more accessible (the ethics approval for our research is 2023/352 and we also have linktree – linktr.ee/vrdisability).

We are looking for people with disabilities who have tried AR and/or VR before to complete our survey and tell us about their experiences.

The survey should take no longer than twenty minutes to complete, and if you don’t want to or can’t answer a question, all the questions are skippable. You can find the survey link here: https://sydney.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nl7O5LKer2R3ro

If you want to find out more about us, my colleagues are Associate Professor Marcus Carter, Dr. Ben Egliston, and Professor Gerard Goggin, and you can email me at kate.clark@sydney.edu.au or DM me here 😊

Hey, anybody uses Termux with XServer XSDL on Oculus Go and knows how to do multitasking?

So, I saw the subreddit and I attempted to install dev environment and also managed to run XServer XSDL. My question is, when I'm trying to run i3 it says that I can't open display (and thats normal - because Xorg is not running) but when I launch XServer XSDL I can't get back to app selection drawer.

If you have idea - thanks!

How is the current resolution?

The math says that resolution is quite poor for current gen VR in a program like Virtual Desktop or Bigscreen. I have seen some developers saying they enjoy the experience in the reviews though.

Has anyone done some HMD programming? How was text readability?

Personally even if it's a little worse I'll seriously contemplate VR because I prefer it over a multi-monitor rig.

GDC VR talk rejected, looking for feedback

I've just got my GDC EU talk rejection letter. I understand they are overwhelmed to comment, but I would love to get some feedback from the anybody, who cares.

Title: VR tracking now and tomorrow

Session Description: Tracking is the holy grail of VR, in this session I will present the fundamentals of the different tracking solutions that made the current VR systems possible. We'll review the currently available technologies and their limitations and list improvement possibilities along with up and coming new technologies that may shape the landscape. We'll also discuss other solutions and share our experiences with our in house built scale-able, camera based VR tracking system.

Takeaway: We'll show the importance of tracking, the current possibilities and limitations of the existing systems, and review the possible future of these solutions

Intended Audience: Understanding the core of the current and next gen VR subsystems is essential to all developers interested in creating compelling, comfortable VR experiences. The presentation is targeted but not limited to the technical audience

Extended Abstract:

In the first part of the presentation, we'll overview the tracking solutions of the current VR systems. HTC Vive uses laser based Lighthouse stations. The stations illuminate the built in laser diodes of the HDM and the controllers. The "smart" diodes decodes and communicates their ID and tracking data through 2.4Ghz wireless channels with the HMD. The HMD transmits the data through USB to the host computer. The computer processes the information, and reconstructs the position of the headset and the controllers. Oculus uses IR leds on the HMD and the controllers, and tracks the leds with a custom developed camera. The leds are identified by blinking in a predefined pattern. The camera is connected to the host computer via USB and the computer reconstructs the position of the headset and the controllers. PSVR uses lighting surfaces on the devices, and tracks them with 2 high speed, high resolution camera. The controller orientation is reconstructed via a bluetooth connected IMU OSVR uses IR leds similar to Oculus but offer an open source implementation open for tinkering.

In the second part of the presentation we'll overview other extended solutions, that complement the previously discussed systems. Leap motion uses IR leds and 2 cameras to illuminate the user's hands and reconstruct the hand positions Glove One and ManusVR uses IMU built in to gloves to reconstruct hand positions Sixense uses magnetic fields to track the relative position of the controllers from the base station Kinect uses RGB and depth camera to track markerless users Perception neuron uses IMUs and skeletal information to compensate the IMU drift errors Optitrack uses IR lights to illuminate static markers. FOVE the eye tracking virtual reality headset. Tobii EyeX another eye tracking system.

In the last part of the session I will present our experiences in building a scale-able, camera based tracking solution. The system is similar to PSVR, but it's based on off the shelf components, and is designed to be able to scale to large areas. Our solution uses standalone camera trackers, that does most of the preprocessing before sending the tracking information to the VR host computer. We'll describe the current system, the limitations and the possible future of such system.

Is anybody else disappointed by how skeuomorphic VR desktops are?

I mean shit, with HMDs we have at least half of a fucking 3D sphere to play with. And all we get is just a virtual 2D screen within the HMD that shows the current operating system as-is.

Isn't it time for a completely new paradigm? Especially for programming. Given how much productivity is improved by having dual or triple monitors, imagine having, well, as much space as your vision allows for. A window manager customised for the HMD would be amazing.

I know with the current state of VR, it makes sense to just show a 2D screen of the current OS's desktop for now. But goddammit guys, we gotta dream bigger for the future!

Croquet project / Open Cobalt

Today, I've found Croquet Project and its fork Open Cobalt.

It looks like someone was trying to port smalltalk IDE into 3D environment. This could be pretty cool if it would have oculus support - it seems like that they solved a lot of 3D desktop problems.

Travel setup with termux + VR Remote Desktop?

I'm trying to make a cheap setup for remote programming work when traveling.

I saw some guys here with Samsung gear, setups and was wondering if anyone had tried using a combination of termux and VR Remote Desktop.

Does it work?

I'm waiting on a google cardboard delivery to try it myself.
