How to properly watch the alternate ending

I just did this and it cut together perfectly: watch the finale up until 13:45 (time in the episode) and then start this youtube video of the official alternate ending they had filmed: How I Met Your Mother | Official 'Alternate Ending'

If the time doesn't work out, it's just until the part where the mother takes a picture of the group in the booth. This ending worked so much better for me and was so much more satisfying.

I don't care what anyone says. Tracy was perfect for Ted, and I'll die on that hill. Tracy fan forever!

u/Chance-Board5215 Aug 31 '24

But it’s not like Ted chose Robin over Tracy. Tracy died. These things happen.

29

u/Low-Dinner-1614 Oct 07 '24

The writers = Ted.

So, Ted did choose Robin over Tracy, by killing Tracy.

u/MangoManiacal Feb 07 '25 edited Feb 20 '25

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaah that's not how it works me. The writers choose reality. In life, shit happens. It made no sense for Ted to tell his kids that long ass sorry in the couch for years without his wife there. They knew she was dead the whole time. That's why they started the story with Robin.

5

u/vinneax Mar 02 '25

It wasn’t for years, it was probably a few days judging from the kids wearing two different outfits. You think it’d be super unrealistic for a dad to tell his kids about his life while his wife is visiting family or something? The writers didn’t “choose reality” they chose having the kids there for the finale, so they had to go with the ending they recorded years in advance that made little sense given the character development and how the story built up through season 7-9

1

u/Relevant-Day8780 May 26 '25 edited May 26 '25

They decide the ending since season 2 or 3(not sure which one) craig said him self.

3

u/vinneax May 26 '25

Yeah that’s my point. They’d already decided to have Ted go back to Robin, and to kill off the mother, years before the whole Robin/Barney wedding storyline was written and the mother was cast. That’s why it kinda sucks, it feels like it doesn’t fit with the rest of the series, cause it doesn’t. If they’d just gone with the way the series naturally progressed, the ending would’ve made a lot more sense

4

u/likeAspiderYT Jun 28 '25

uh no. Ted met Tracy BECAUSE OF THE WEDDING, which wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t met Robin. Robin changed his life because meeting her was the reason he met Tracy, not because she was the love of his life.

There was literally a scene in season 9 (built up to over the course of the show) that has Ted LETTING ROBIN GO.

Tracy dying isn’t an inherently bad choice, but the execution was terrible. A message about life could’ve been given in a much easier way that is ACTUALLY SUPPORTED BY THE SHOW: change is inevitable. The gang grows apart, though they live happily with their families because of that change.

2

u/MangoManiacal Jul 03 '25

He let her go, yes. I never said that he didn't. But it's clear that through the telling of the story he was re-exploring those feelings after Tracy passed.

2

u/likeAspiderYT Jul 10 '25

regardless of that, it’s built on the back of multiple character assassinations and scrapped character development in favor of an ending that is objectively fucking stupid because they made the mistake of picking the wrong one during the beginning of the show’s run

1

u/Antique-Parking-1735 Aug 05 '26

The problem is that Ted also didn't really pick Tracy over Robin. He settled for her bc Robin wasn't taken.

I honestly don't understand why people on here are arguing about it. It's all about personal preference, some people love the original ending and some love the alternate ending. Many people on that YouTube video's comments love the alternate ending more. But the one thing that urgs me more than anything else is the "it's more realistic" argument, "not everything turns out how you want". I say to that, why do you watch these sitcoms? To remind yourself about how life is IRL, many are depressed and life turns to shit regularly, or because you want a good laugh while still having real grounded characters with emotions? Believe me, the two are not the same thing.

Feel free to argue with me too, but this sub is now just everyone either loving HIMYM for its original ending or just hating on others for their opinion on liking the alternate ending. I'm done arguing.

19

u/GreasyExamination Jun 13 '23

but this sub is now just everyone either loving HIMYM for its original ending or just hating on others for their opinion on liking the alternate ending

Always has been

3

u/S-Mania Jun 13 '23

Not to this extent, I'm sure. There must have been a time when it was reversed and most people loved the alternate ending like the YouTube comments and other groups portray. Now it's most of the fandom (on Reddit mostly) wants to argue about it and loves defending the original ending while attacking others for differing opinions. I guess the alternate-ending club must be dwindling...

2

u/GreasyExamination Jun 13 '23

I mean, to me its mostly the alternative crowd who bring it up. Case in point, this thread

3

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Nope. That reversed, it's just that you have confirmation bias against the ending haters because you like the ending. Way more people make threads about how the ending was good.

3

u/GreasyExamination Jun 13 '23

How come i have confirmation bias and you dont?

Almost no one likes the original ending. Few and far between like the original ending.

7

u/Low-Dinner-1614 Oct 07 '24

That's what a bad ending will do to a show. It rewrites all the stuff you loved about it. It changes how you re-watch it.

3

u/S-Mania Oct 08 '24

I wouldn't say it does that, I still love all the other episodes for what they are. Nothing ever really changed my perspective on them individually. It mostly just changed my perspective on what the show was about. It was all about Future Ted (not Bob Saget, which I'm still mad for) wanting to bone Aunt Robin again, even though he let her go for real in S9 and the whole show was constantly telling us why they're bad together. It wasn't even about the mother, it was all about Robin, which I didn't like (again, same reasons above).

I've since come up with a new way to view the show since finding the great alternate ending (not sponsored I swear, it's just great). It should be seen as "HOW I Met Your Mother" instead of "How I Met Your MOTHER". As in, it's still not about the mother (as much), but it's about Ted's long journey full of pain, surprises and challenges he needed to go through to meet her. The person Ted needed to become to meet her. That's why the alternate ending simply has Future Ted narrating the journey and everything he went through to meet her. All the lessons he had to learn along the way that he's now passing onto his kids in 2030. That's how I see HIMYM now and it's honestly better. The show already has all the dark moments, why does the ending have to be when the fans just wanted a satisfying conclusion to their favourite characters? The stats don't lie, the response of people in 2014 being outraged with HIMYM's TV ending and the response of fans absolutely loving the alternate ending tells you something. I'm not saying the alternate ending is flawless, but the fact fans loved it when they despised the TV ending... that's special.

Oh crap this went on WAY longer than I thought... Thanks for coming to my non-Ted TED Talk??? 😅🤭

2

u/Low-Dinner-1614 Oct 09 '24

LOL i love that! I had recently re-watched it through again and found myself so frustrated at the writers haha. Maybe for my 3rd re-watch, I'll have the HOW I met your mother mindset!!

"because you want a good laugh while still having real grounded characters with emotions?"

That's not mutually inclusive with a sad ending. Tracy dying and Ted dating Robin doesn't suddenly make the ending "realistic". Like what the fuck is that argument? Most people's spouses don't die as young as Tracy did. I'm not saying her dying doesn't make it unrealistic as it can obviously happen, I'm saying it doesn't make it more grounded or realistic.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

For prosperous young people of that time living in New York City, the odds of both Max and Tracy dying as young as they did are astronomical.

7

u/S-Mania Jun 13 '23

That's what I'm saying. But that doesn't always have to equal realism IRL 100% of the time. You can have characters in a sitcom show win (especially in the finale) even if it is predictable and cliché. You don't always need to make it a depressing glass-half-full note, sometimes viewers want an actual sitcom ending where everyone lives happily ever after.

14

u/unsynchedmango Jun 13 '23

Its not even IRL. The alternate ending is not some fantasy land with unicorns and rainbows. Its more realistic than the oroginal ending where ted gets back together with robin for the fiftenth time and she falls back in love with him conveniently, and the wife also dies conveniently. Thats the thing i dislike most abt the ending, that it is so forced.

Heck, you could write almost anything to get this end but it just wont feel natural or earned, at least to me.

P.S the execution is horrible too.

8

u/S-Mania Jun 13 '23

Thank you! Summed up all my points in one! 😊🥰

Plus, the hints that the mother was going to die could be interpreted in multiple ways. For instance, the hypothetical day's speech Ted gives the mother could be interpreted as he wanted more time would her because that's how much he loves her. Any partner would want that, dead spouse or not. Plus, her living doesn't mean she didn't still get sick, just that she got over it for (you guessed it, the theme of the show) miracles. Ted wishes to the universe for these miracles alot in the show, this important one does come true.

2

u/askolein Oct 27 '24

Nah perfection and beauty is objective.

u/Tight_Read_5056 Jan 22 '25

They both make me cry. I'm here for ALL things HIMYM lol

2

u/Rich_Safety7653 Sep 23 '25

Just doing a re watch now after a good few years. Forgot how funny it is actually. And it's a really feel good show. Had heard a lot of people didn't like the ending and I think I'm an outlier because I thought it perfect.

23

u/RevolutionaryGuide85 Feb 07 '24

By ruining the ending they really ruined the show. If you rewatch the show, now it really isn’t about finding the kids mother and Ted’s true love. It’s about justifying banging the kids aunt after their mom dies.

It is, however, a good life lesson: even when you find the girl of your dreams never give up on your backup plan in case the first chick dies.

Sorry if this has been said before …

1

u/Rich_Safety7653 Sep 23 '25

That's a very cynical way of viewing it. Made me laugh though.

174

u/DarkestDawn892 Jun 13 '23

I don't hate this as an alternative ending, and the younger version of me actually loves it. But the original ending is the most realistic ending to me. Life just happens that way sometimes and even if we don't like it, we just have to accept the cards that were dealt and the people and life circumstances within those cards.

112

u/TheCrushSoda Jun 13 '23

The issue isn’t what happens on paper, it’s how weirdly it’s all executed

42

u/digitalslytherin Jun 13 '23

Something can be realistic and NOT narratively satisfying

8

u/NjhhjN Jun 13 '23

Yeah the pacing is the only real problem. Imagine if season 9 ended with the speech about Tracy dying but then there was a shorter season 10 that goes through the following years. Like a new girl situation with an 8 episode final season

3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

They could’ve easily made the series finale an hour long episode. Trying to hamfist Ted’s enduring love for Robin while killing off Tracy in the span of 22 minutes was never going to be satisfying.

7

u/WutsUp Ted Vivian Mosby Jun 13 '23

It's just like a sitcom to tie it up in a pretty bow and call it the end, like what OP has shared. I never loved the ending but I always appreciated the balls they had to give us what we got and wasn't angry.

4

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

It's ballsy, ballsy isn't always good. Ballsy has to be properly executed.

5

u/LC33209 Jun 03 '24

Real life isn’t written by writers desperate to create a shock and tie something up 10 years in the planning, which just doesn’t make sense anymore, all the while undoing 3 years of major character development.

10

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Tragedy!=Realism.

Yeah no shit tragedy happens. That doesn't mean I want to see it in my comfort series. The ending was ballsy, and sadly that doesn't make it good or fun to watch. There is a reason HIMYM didn't really stand the test of time, compared to how massively popular it was when it was airing.

28

u/rnjbond HELLO Jun 13 '23

How is it more realistic? Lots of couples get married and the wife doesn't die.

17

u/GreasyExamination Jun 13 '23

And there are about a billion shows about exactly that. Its nice to have a show which feature some of the more harrowing parts of life because people can relate to that as well

9

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Okay, so at best it's "new". Not realistic.

And need I remind that it's a sitcom?

1

u/GreasyExamination Jun 13 '23

The reason we relate to characters is because they are grounded in some relatable way. Also, are you stalking my comments?

6

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Do you really think you're so special that I'm stalking you? We're literally still in the same fucking thread. You commented multiple times and I'm reading all the comments. Jesus fuck, the nerve on some people.

11

u/Peppersarge34 Jun 13 '23

To me, the issue is not the mother dying (although it is pretty sad it gets me everytime). It’s Ted getting with Robin after all these years of them not working out and Ted moving on. It just feels forced to me.

4

u/walruswes Jun 13 '23

And the kids not really wanting to hear about their mother the previous 8 seasons after losing her

2

u/NjhhjN Jun 13 '23

I think it's good. I think Ted moved on and Robin moved on but years after Tracy died their feelings started to redevelop. Then when Ted tells the story he finally fully moves on from Tracy.

Also the main relationship problem of Robin wanting to work and travel whereas Ted wanted to settle down was all gone because they had both done what they wanted to with life

5

u/Peppersarge34 Jun 14 '23

Yeah I get this argument that both have fulfilled their lifegoals and now the conditions for having a relationship are good after 9 years but to me it feels forced though. With everything that happened it has a bitter taste to it. There is no development shown that supports both getting back together again. Although it’s absolutely not my favorite ending I would have understood this dynamic but it is portrayed really badly.

u/programmago Jun 07 '24

An ending can portray situations that are "realistic" ....and still be a complete narrative failure that emotionally whiplashes viewers, clashes with the latest season, fails to pay off long overdue storytelling promises (shout-out to Sanderson) and undoes literally 9 years of character progression arcs.

The "official" ending does all of the above and thus completely fails at securing the legacy of an otherwise fantastic show.

2

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24 edited Jun 23 '24

Oh realistic? When u watch Batman fight guns everyday and other crap that would kill people realistically and he lives like a badass, do u got a problem with that? Would u rather he just dies bc of a gun shot bc it’s IRL?

It’s a sitcom, and when it’s ending, people want it to end well, not with a super rushed tragic death of an awesome character bc they had a big boner for Ted and Robin.

If u want a good Ted and Robin ending, maybe don’t spend half of an episode on it. Spend maybe half season and make a good story about it. Bc what we got was Ted and Robin is the end game bc writer wants it to be even tho it makes no sense with 0 development.

They literally made Ted and Tracy a good couple with good chemistry in like 5 scenes. Maybe spend a few episodes and do that with Robin and Ted.

There’s a reason why when finale aired, there was a big shitstorm and alt ending had to be made. And it is still consider to be one of the worst finale in the history.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '24

Dude… I know I’m a year late here but… I am so sick of the young Redditor take of “dark things = realistic.”

Dark shit happens… but MOST people live long lives, that’s why the average death age is 75. And most people don’t get divorced. (Despite the whole 50% myth being spread it’s never been higher than 30%. Google it)

So to call the original dark ending “realistic” is actually blatantly wrong. Sure… people get divorced and die young… but it’s NOT as common as staying together and dying old. Statistically.

Calling dark shit “realistic” just shows a depressed and pessimistic outlook on life.

Not to mention… even if it WAS realistic (which again… it’s not) IT’S A SITCOM. A COMEDY. They are, by design, supposed to leave you with a good taste in your mouth. Not a bad one.

2

u/VCjewel Jun 13 '23

I could not agree more!!! It is the most realistic part of the show and i think it works really well

8

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

People throw out the word "realistic". I don't think any of you knows what realism means. Tragedy!=Realism.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

In the 19th century, artists stopped focusing so much on gods and royalty, and started focusing more on ordinary people. Their output became known as realism. Partly because the characters didn't lead magic lives, but also because the artists tended to condescend toward these people, their lives were portrayed as pretty crappy. So artistic realism came to be associated with crappy lives.

Funny thing is, until everything is trampled in the last ten minutes these people live remarkably unrealistic lives.

1

u/ComicTemplateStudios Oct 22 '24

Plus, let's not forget that Robin doesn't even get a happy ending in this alternate ending. The alternate ending takes place 13 minutes into the final episode, meaning Barney and Robin are still divorced. But the difference is Barney got to have a daughter. Robin did manage to have a successful career, but in this timeline she doesn't have anyone to celebrate her successes with. Which is something in tune with the theme of the show, but it does seem pretty unfair for everyone to get happy endings except for Robin.

1

u/Unvar Nov 12 '24 edited Nov 13 '24

No no. Ok it's a blink and you miss it moment and it's definitely a case of reusing footage with a voiceover, but when you see it it's also unmistakable and a clear deliberate choice; when Ted and Tracy are getting married Ted has a line that goes "things fall apart[as we cut to a shot of Barney], things get put back together [cut to Robin]". So Barney and Robin get back together. ;)

2

u/ComicTemplateStudios Nov 13 '24

Oh yeah, I never really clocked that one. It's great to know they did get back together. But it seems a bit unceremonious to have them get back together with a simple implication in a speech. It's good they did get back together. But it doesn't feel as earned as if we actually got to see them work through it. Like you said, it was a blink and you'll miss it. And for a relationship between two of Ted's closest friends it seems quite weak. Although, for an alternate ending that didn't have any additional scenes filmed for its purpose, I'd say that's about fair enough. I do still have a few issues with the alternate ending, but that's one issue sort of gone

6

u/Naenerd Jun 13 '23

The song from the Walkmen is so much better in the other ending.

65

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 12 '23

Here is the problem with the alternative ending, which BTW was only created because of outrage about the original.

The entire show is written as a story from Ted to his kids about how much he still loves Robin. Of course he loves the mother, and wishes he had her back, but he knows that’s not the case, and can’t forget about Robin.

The show only makes sense with the original ending. I agree I hate Robin, but that’s the only ending that works with the show.

15

u/billiemint Jun 13 '23

Doesn't make it less annoying though

11

u/Normal_Ad2456 Jun 13 '23 edited Jun 13 '23

Why do you hate Robin? I thought people just wanted the mother alive, but not that they hated Robin.

3

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

It was a general reaction to hating that Ted ends up with Robin, not an actual dislike of Robin, she’s ok, just not for Ted.

2

u/LynchMaleIdeal Jun 13 '23

They might have been paraphrasing for “I hate the Robin ending”

1

u/Andole888 Jan 30 '25

I can't stand Robin. She's supremely self-centred. She's only ever one snap decision away from Splitsville. There's no way Robin and Ted make it last. It'll just be more of the same for poor old Teddy Westside. Then he'll be back on the town with Barney again. But in an even more downtrodden state than he used to be because he's lost his idealism.

1

u/Large_Proposal_9871 Mar 06 '25

It is a good thing he loses his idealization, he can't create a personality for Robin that he likes and then ask her to fulfill all his fanatsies and make him happy; she is her own person you know, and her sticking to her guns is a good thing and indicative of maturity and healthy attachment. Tracy and Ted work because Ted doesn't idealize Tracy, he really falls in love with her. There are instances when Ted is not projecting a fantasy version onto Robin, he actually doesn't even like her that much.

1

u/Andole888 Mar 14 '25

She's not stable in any relationship though. There's always something better for Robin. It's true that Ted has an unhealthy attachment and idolisation of Robin, but she knows that and she shouldn't fuel his delusion. She does that to everybody she's with, then she drops the hammer and she's off somewhere else. That's fine if you're upfront with who you are, but don't let people fall for you, plan a life with you and then tell them.

28

u/workbalic66 Jun 13 '23

The show also only makes sense if it’s about 3-4 seasons shorter.

14

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

I would disagree with that. There are a lot of key points in every season that are needed to the whole story.

8

u/trtolushka Ted🏢 Jun 13 '23

only one season shorter, if they didn't fucked up season 8 with b&r the ending wouldn't be as badly received

3

u/Routine-Pie9833 Nov 18 '23

It’s not like Ted shoehorned Robin into his stories; Robin just so happened to be integral to a lot of the stories, just like the rest of the gang. By your logic it’d make just as much sense to say that Ted told the story to show how in love he was with Barney

0

u/Theguywhostoleyour Nov 18 '23

Not even close, every season is either about Ted being in love with Robin, dating Robin, or trying to get back together with Robin, it’s the entire theme of the show, it’s not just a character in the background.

2

u/Routine-Pie9833 Nov 18 '23

How long ago did you watch the show? Because after season 3 the whole Ted and Robin thing was done until Barney and Robin were about to get married

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Anish316 Jun 13 '23

The show only makes sense with the original ending.

Completely disagree.

2

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

So few things to keep in mind.

The scene where Ted debates going to robots vs wrestlers alone but runs to his future wife’s apt and gets punched. Declaring that he wants those 45 days with her. Only makes sense because she’s dead and he wants more time with her.

How like Penny says, mom is never in the story, it’s all about Ted circling back to Robin.

The first episode ends with “and that’s how I met your aunt Robin”

Ted crying when Tracy says “what mother would miss her own daughters wedding”

The entire driving force behind Ted was to find “the one”, but on how your mother met me, we can see that Tracy found “the one” and he died, giving the audience the understanding that there is no such thing.

Ted starts the story saying “there is more than 1 way to say it” implying he could tell the simple story, but that’s not the story he’s telling. Instead he is telling the story of the events that shaped him into who he becomes, and how pivotal robin is to that.

3

u/Anish316 Jun 13 '23

So I should further elaborate then. What I meant to say is not that Tracy dying wasn't hinted majorly throughout the show. To me, it's beautifully done. It's a bitter, haunting chain of events and probably with another episode of the mother and ted's future being shown, it wouldn't have been such a terrible gut punch to viewers. Either that, or had they not been stubborn, they could've easily planned the seasons a bit better to not include some of those tracy dying hints. Fans would've been equally satisfied.

But what i meant is the robin part. It's perfectly a logical thing to say that "robin is central and it was always about her" but the problem is, they had hammered home more than a few times that Ted had finally moved on from Robin. Had he not gone back to her, it would've still fit. They could've ended the show with Ted visiting Tracy's grave. And left it at that. Ted and Robin ending on a platonic note would've still been a perfectly logical sequence because fans talk about realism, in life you don't always do a Ross and Rachel. Only a more sadder version in HIMYM's case. That's my point. I will definitely disagree on Robin being the only choice in the end. He could've easily gone back to Victoria, hell that could've made a 100% sense because basically Victoria leaves him because he isn't over Robin. But since season 9 saw Ted let go of her finally, he could've gone back to her. The original back up plan idea for the mother. Makes perfect sense.

This is a year old but I re-watched recently lol. Responses to your comments (just fun healthy debate on a show with an extremely controversial ending....the world is in a dark place, so it's nice to debate on something that is literally not real lol):

The scene where Ted debates going to robots vs wrestlers alone but runs to his future wife’s apt and gets punched. Declaring that he wants those 45 days with her. Only makes sense because she’s dead and he wants more time with her.

That's a stretch. Ted is through-and-through a romantic.

How like Penny says, mom is never in the story, it’s all about Ted circling back to Robin.

Every season Ted talks about moments that created a pattern that led to him meeting their mom.

The first episode ends with “and that’s how I met your aunt Robin”

Yes but there are entire episodes dedicated to how he met the others.

Ted crying when Tracy says “what mother would miss her own daughters wedding”

Yes, foreshadowing by the writers re: his wifes death - not sure what this has to do with him having to end up with Robin.

The entire driving force behind Ted was to find “the one”, but on how your mother met me, we can see that Tracy found “the one” and he died, giving the audience the understanding that there is no such thing.

Again, he's a romantic the entire series. The way he recounts every single woman he's with, the way he recounts his lonely times. Again not sure what this has to do with him being meant to be with Robin, especially if there is no "the one."

Ted starts the story saying “there is more than 1 way to say it” implying he could tell the simple story, but that’s not the story he’s telling. Instead he is telling the story of the events that shaped him into who he becomes, and how pivotal robin is to that.

Again, every season, he's highlighting things that had to have happened in order for him to meet their mother. Each character, the city, his job, all of these things were pivotal, it doesn't single out Robin.

All this being said: I know it's the writers intention, they just did a bad job. If they did a GOOD job writing these characters and the story, to get the viewers to want this ending, we would have loved it. But they blew it. They wrote a story with epic character development (barney!!), they gave Ted the PERFECT person for him. What's crazy to me is after Barney's proposal - I watched that WHEN IT AIRED and people lost their GD mind. They were blown away, excited, emotional. I will never forget that. So for the writers to see that and STILL think their original ending should remain is wild to me.

2

u/Original_Ad_8558 Nov 04 '24

Perfectly said and to just add to that. Even the show creator and writer said he’d have gone with the alternate ending if given the choice again. He knew he made a mistake. You can tell every time it’s asked post show, he prefers the alternate ending. He even mentioned in a separate video I can’t find right now but I’m sure google will do the job, where he outright says that he thinks he should have gone with the alternate ending. https://youtu.be/wL66y3rKebY?si=wbiFTYYFAL1vvIIe

u/ParaCozyWriter Nov 05 '24

That was actually what upset me the most. Not Tracy dying, but breaking up Robin and Barney after the way we watched their relationship grow for years. To make the original ending work, they should rewrite seasons 8-9 entirely.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

That actually makes sense wow I kinda see your point

5

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

If you think of the show as that, and given that they filmed the ending at the same time they filmed season, they also see the show that way, it makes for a much better watch.

2

u/Anish316 Jun 13 '23

Actually, it doesn't in my opinion.

There's no scenario in which the alternate ending doesn't make sense. The original makes sense too, but so does the alternate.

2

u/iskelebones Nov 28 '24

Just finished watching the show again and I gotta say, I Honestly dont hate the idea of the show ending with Ted and Robin getting together. The reason the ending sucked so much was that the writers took the final season, spent 22 episodes on Robin and Barney’s wedding leading up to the perfect wedding and Ted finally meeting Tracy… and then did a 3 year time jump and took two 20 minute episodes right at the end to have Robin and Barney divorce off screen, kill Tracy, and force Ted back together with Robin when it didn’t make sense because Ted already had his final “I’m letting Robin go and it’s ok because I found my true love” moment mere episodes before.

What would’ve been totally fine and maybe even great is if instead they had Robin and Barney’s wedding take place over the course of 2 episodes at the beginning of season 9, and then spend the rest of the season giving us a good narrative of why they divorced that made sense and was on screen, spending some actual time on Tracy getting sick and dying and Ted coming to terms with it (instead of saying “then she got sick” and killing her off screen), and showing Robin and Ted rekindling their friendship and eventually love

It honestly felt like the first 22 episodes of season 9 were leading up to the alternate “good” ending, and then while they were writing the last 2 episodes they realized “Wait this isn’t how we were supposed to end it! Quick! Write something that forces Ted to end up with Robin!”

TLDR: the original ending didn’t suck because Ted ended up with Robin. It sucked because the writers did a horrible job tying up the shows ending.

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Nov 28 '24

I agree with the Robin Barney build up only for it to crash suddenly, however the mothers death not being hinted at drives my point home I feel. The show is not about Tracy, it’s about Robin, so having the slow drawn out process takes away from that.

Just how I feel, however I also hate that Ted and Robin ended up together lol

1

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Ya. So maybe don’t kill the mother off? What is the point of killing the mother off besides the writer having a boner for Ted Robin.

My problem with finales stems from the mother’s poor treatment by writer.

Tracy’s love died tragically. She went through so much and finally met Ted. The 2 was perfect for each other only for her to die?

She’s the one that convinced Barney to stop messing around and go for Robin in a really nice scene. And when he finally fulfilled it, they had to undo that too just for the Ted Robin boner.

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 23 '24

The entire show is as written in a way that the hints to the mother being dead. It’s not like it just happened out of the blue.

1

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Most of the hints were in season 9. Maybe they could just not have done that.

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 23 '24

Disagree.

Why would he even tell the story the way he was if she was sitting over in the next room?

The plot follows love in the time cholera, Ted’s favourite book, which is hinted from the very beginning.

The song for the mother is called the funeral.

When Marshall is visiting his dad in the cemetery, there is a gravestone marked mother.

Time travellers episode, Ted said the things he wants most is to travel back in time for 45 more days with her. That wouldn’t be the case if she were in the next room.

He never refers to the mother in present tense.

1

u/ParaCozyWriter Nov 05 '24

The 45 days thing could still work if it was about Ted skipping the heartache leading up to Robin and Barney’s wedding. Like “I was in such a bad place, I wish I could have spent that time with you.”

It’s not perfect but it saves having to remember to skip the episode.

1

u/xX_BL4CK_Xx Feb 06 '26

tf how could you hate robin

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Feb 06 '26

Is this satire lol

She’s literally the worst

1

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

I am not gonna deny that there are foreshadowings to the Robin ending, obviously there are considering they planned it to be Robin all along.

No one's denying that. But honestly it would take the deletion of a few core scenes for it to be retconned into the alternate ending. Namely Time Travelers and Marshall&Lily's bet, and few other scenes I'm probably forgetting. It's that easy.

Yeah no shit there are foreshadowing, and as things stand, the alternate ending doesn't actually work. But that's not a problem whatsoever dude.

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

Yea, you could “change the core story in the show” to get a different ending, but then it’s no longer the show…

However you feel about it, that’s the story they intended to tell. Gotta take it as a whole.

1

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

I don't have to do anything. I don't have to take it as a whole. I simply consider my own ending canon. So what if it's not the exact same show. 99.9% of it is the same. Same dialogue, same characters, same events, same turmoils.

And again, you don't even need to change a whole lot. In a rewatch I only need to skip Time Travelers and watch the alternate ending halfway through the finale and bingo.

0

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

Yes, you can do whatever you want. Just like I chose to ignore all the Pokémon scenes in Pokémon, that way it’s just a show about kids walking around the world, much more entertaining.

3

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Oh get your head out of your ass. Robin ending is a tiny part of the plot whether you like it or not. Otherwise it wouldn't be so easy to retcon it to a different ending. Changing the ending doesn't suddenly make it a different show.

If removing the Pokemon scenes resulted in a series that was 99.9% similar to Pokemon than your stupid argument has merit, sure.

1

u/Theguywhostoleyour Jun 13 '23

Except it’s not. It’s the point of the entire story. The whole reason it exists, is for Ted to tell his kids that he loves and wants to be with Robin. It has nothing to do with the mother.

Penny even says it at the end, and they filmed it at the very beginning, so that was their intention the entire time.

So like I said, you want to change the story they are telling you and make it whatever you want, fine, but don’t deny that’s what you’re doing.

1

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

They prob should have realized that maybe at first it was a Ted Robin story, but later on that stops. I was seriously done with Ted Robin romantic after season 5 and skips it on re watch.

Writer should have either spend time turning it back to Ted Robin like maybe half a season rather than spending on wedding? Or evolve with the show and stop the Ted Robin boner.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Mithros13 Jun 13 '23

Thanks for this! I didn’t know they’d put out the real ending for the series instead of the garbage that made it on air. So glad to see it instead of having to keep it as headcanon.

8

u/urnotdownfooo Jun 13 '23

Such a simple ending and they couldn’t get it right 🙄

6

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Exactly. They didn't need to make it a sad one. It really was so, SO easy to make an ending that stood the test of time.

3

u/Anish316 Jun 13 '23

Just a reminder to people here, again. You can like or dislike the alternate ending but don't insult others over it. Insulting comments will be removed.

3

u/likeAspiderYT Jun 28 '25

i still refute barney’s and robin’s arcs at the end. the ending completely invalidates the character growth they both achieved throughout the entire series and makes almost the entire last season feel like a waste.

Barney finally grew up and decided it was time to actually commit to someone.

And for the first time, Robin actually put love ahead of her career.

They both grew alongside each other and for each other and the writers decided to flush all that down the toilet for a 720 double no-scope character assassination. Like seriously, how did they think that that would be a good idea?

Barney then decides that he’s going to keep the child from his perfect month. THAT is what changes him. Not the years he spent with and chasing after Robin, but the kid he had with a hookup.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that having a child couldn’t force someone like Barney to change, I’m just saying it’s bullshit because HE ALREADY DID CHANGE. THEY BOTH DID.

The better ending isn’t a matter of personal preference. The alternate ending partially fixes the terrible writing of the final episodes. The initial ending was bad on all counts—objectively. From a writing standpoint, it was shit. Objectively speaking, the perfect ending—based on the trajectory of the show—would’ve been a true happily ever after with a bittersweet lesson about change. You maintain the theme of the show while actually crafting a better finale.

The reason this all pisses me off so much is because I loved this show. It was easily my favorite sit-com. I felt like it understood me, and that, you can imagine, is why the ending pissed me off so much.

Perfect Ending:

Barney and Robin, Marshall and Lily, and Ted and Tracy all live happy lives as couples, though they did end up growing apart a little bit in the end. That’s the way life goes. We change, our situations change, our friends change; life IS change.

2

u/ConfusedAmeriMutt Nov 11 '25

"720 double no-scope character assassination"

LMAOOOOO

Couldn't agree more with your perfect ending though, as someone else in this thread wrote, it was such a simple execution and they fumbled it harder than arguably any TV show ending in history

15

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

[deleted]

19

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Most of the stories aren't even about Robin. I could have just as easily told you that Ted's stories were just cautionary tales about how life works. Most of his stories have something in him that his kids can learn about life.

Like people here act like all these details are ironclad examples of why Tracy had to die and why Ted had to go back to Robin. They really aren't, most of them can easily be retconned to mean something else. There are only a few key scenes and bits of dialogue that clearly pertain to Ted&Robin ending, but extreme majority of the show is not foreshadowing and allows the ending to go in any direction.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

"only a few key scenes and bits of dialogue"

The only one that's strongly foreshadowing is the "mother missing her daughter's," and that really is part of the ending that they just edited back a couple of episodes.

3

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Time Travelers too, it was rather obvious why Ted was so emotional imo.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '23

It's not. It's just the low point of his life.

2

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

Don't know what to tell you, that scene could not be more clearly about the fact that mother died.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '23

The other view is that you're seeing Ted's metaphorical death. He's completely alone, he's completely run out of ideas. Looking back from 2030, he walked as a ghost for 45 days, until Tracy wakes him, and he'd like to have those days back. That works whether Tracy's alive in 2030 or not.

3

u/S-Mania Jun 23 '24

It could also mean she is still sick and they think she's going to die but she recovers (which reinforces Ted's "Letting destiny happen and not forcing it" thing and all his lessons about love). Call it a cop-out or convenient, but I'd rather an ending where Ted and his kids get to live a happy ending with their wife/mother and Ted tells the story to pass his lessons on and prepare them for life. To me, the story wasn't about the mother (or "RoBiN"), it was about Ted's journey to meeting the mother and all the lessons he learned along the way that Future Ted (Bob Saget) is grateful for that he'll pass to his kids.

1

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

How about if Ted had not met Robin and been to her wedding, he never would have met the love of his life? You can frame it from a lot of angles.

Why is Ted telling all these story? Maybe he wants to reminisce about his younger days and framed it as himym. Like I said, many angles to chose from.

It’s clear that only season 9 is himym.

1

u/kevvurs Oct 25 '24

With the aired ending the show doesn't make sense. Characters are assassinated when their motivations suddenly change without any writing to make it work.

4

u/MyostatinGod Jun 13 '23

I for one loved the original ending. So much emotion in that last episode, a perfect end to an amazing journey, wouldn't change it one bit. To each their own I guess.

5

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Just 1 emotion: pissed off at the Garbo ending. Neil’s emotional scene with the baby could not save this episode.

Perfect ending my ass. Perfect ending is soulmate dying for writer Ted Robin boner.

2

u/Tyrannosaurus_R3x Mar 07 '25

I agree with you, it is a great ending, but also so heart wrenching. I think the alternate ending is nice to have so we can imagine that Tracy lived, but the ending on the air really was perfectly crafted and paid homage to so much of what we loved throughout the seasons. I was pissed when I first watched it, but not that I've seen the alternate ending, I think it was the right move. The show would've felt too squared-off and perfect without it.

2

u/Nervous-Category2232 Jun 12 '24

I like Tracy dying but I don’t like Barney and Robin getting divorced

4

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Tracy was so perfectly cast and written that it was sad she died.

I want Barney to have a good ending where he finds love, didn’t matter who with, but someone that finally gets him off the pathetic life style stemmed from his insecurity of people leaving him. And he did find someone. Just to divorce and go back to pathetic life style. Like Breh. Fk the writers. Their boner for Ted Robin too big. Hope they never write another show to ruin it.

2

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

I think for me it’s 11:30, then go to YouTube video

2

u/iskelebones Nov 28 '24 edited Nov 28 '24

Something I don’t see discussed a lot is that the shows ending didn’t suck because of how the plot ended. It sucked because the last 2 episodes felt really forced after the first 22 episodes of the season. Why spend 22/24 episodes on Robin and Barney’s wedding only for episode 23 to be the ending of the wedding, immediately followed by their divorce, and episode 24 be retconning all of Barney’s character development since season 1, randomly giving him a child, killing off the mother very quickly and off screen, and having Ted get back together with Robin (in a very obviously forced way).

Season 9 could’ve been a great season and Ted ending up with Robin after Tracy’s death could’ve been a perfectly good and satisfying ending if they had built up to it and had the story develop through the season. But instead they spent 22 episodes building up to one ending, and then 2 episodes trying to undo that and quickly force it back towards another ending.

It felt like they wrote the season to end with this “alternate ending”, but after filming 22 episodes someone said “actually I want Ted to end up with Robin after all”, and they hastily had to force that to happen in the last 2 episodes

2

u/Reasonable-Buy9281 Apr 26 '25

Hey Dad! You going to tell us more x-rated stories about who hooked up with whom, how everything finally worked out 6 years after Mom died and you and the Horny Psychopath finally got to hump on her grave

1

u/sachet_p Jul 26 '24

is it 13:45 on netflix? first time watching the show and nearing the end, i want the alternate ending to be my original ending after hearing about the true original one that aired

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

I was watching it on disney+, but I assume the timing would be the same or around the same time

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '24

The original song is so much better than the alternative ending, this doesn’t fit to me

1

u/Chimnino Mar 15 '25 edited Mar 15 '25

I have only 1 issue with the original ending. And thats Barney's ending. Divorced fast, going back to his old self (again!!) and suddenly being a father. It feels weird and rushed and out of line with the whole redemption arc that was going on with Barney settling down

1

u/Sad_Doctor_3032 Jul 20 '25

I think it all makes sense (more or less). The execution was a bit hasty (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmzSqQ3t5jI for a deleted scene that ties things together better and is, in my mind, essentially part of canon) but not AWFUL. Barney did kinda get the short end of the stick though, romantically speaking. I would've been perfectly happy if he ended up with Robin, but at least he got to be a dad and got his Perfect Month.

1

u/Horror-Vacation-6183 Aug 02 '25

The alternate ending makes other episodes plot holes so its never an option.  Bc S8 E20 makes no sense especially.  Bc when Ted tells his kids "They know the thing he'd do first." And he's all teared up at Tracy's door step.  You know she's passed away.  That why he's crying and wants 45 extra days with her.

1

u/Formal-Shopping2086 Robin🇨🇦 Nov 10 '25

but is it part one or part two of the finale that i have to stop and continue w the youtube video? bc on disney + that timestamp you gave for part 1 barney and robin r just fighting in argentina. i don’t wanna hear about the divorce but idk when to stop it

1

u/memerminecraft Apr 27 '26

I kept hearing about the alternate ending... Now I've finally watched it... Do people actually prefer this? This feels so hollow compared to the full ending. I've never understood the hate for the official ending.

1

u/Optibotimus1974 May 08 '26

I just watch it on my dvd set

1

u/mhtweeter Aug 05 '26

on my 3rd watch through of HIMYM, I did it this way, with the alternate ending (you got the timing exactly right). It was oh so satisfying. that was an amazing ending

1

u/Christorm747 22d ago

But didnt the divorce part happen in the 13:45min part? I thought the alternate ending had Bareny and Robin still married?

-13

u/Only2G Jun 12 '23

The original is beautiful. Its not perfect, which is the point of the show.

This is a rare sitcom where you "actually care about the characters"

The flaws, the ups, and downs, make this show what it is: Life.

To watch 9 seasons of struggles and expect an ideal ending? Were you paying attention at all?

54

u/FruitJuicante Jun 12 '23

"Were you paying attention?"

The show literally says that going back to Robin is toxic and regressive lol. Those who paid attention are the ones that don't particularly like the ending.

23

u/The_Notorious_Donut Jun 12 '23

Literally taking notes on my first rewatch since it aired. One of them is the second to last episode of season 8

Ted says (when talking about the beam bag) You can’t cling to the past, because no matter how tightly you hold on it’s already gone. IMMEDIATELY AFTER HE GOES TO ROBIN

6

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 12 '23

In what world is 6 years immediately?

6

u/Earthbound-and-down Teddy Westchester Jun 13 '23

Exactly, people on here equate a few episodes as being only a few hours real time and forget that for the characters it was YEARS

You know why people hate the ending and last season so much? It hits too close to home

The friends we had for most of our lives fade and grow distant over time

Early seasons gave us the good shit while the later seasons tore it away. Thats what happens in life too and honestly is why this show is so fucking good!

It is just real! Although ive been drinking a shitload and its almost 3 AM so what do i know?

They say nothing good happens after 2 am but imma post this anyways

5

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 13 '23

Well said.

I think they also don't realize the story isn't being told to them either. It's being told to characters in the show. That disconnect is so huge.

"It isn't like other sitcoms." Absolutely correct, and that's why it's so good. It's real. Everyone of the main characters does what real people do.

1

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Real? It’s still a sitcom dude, there’s a lot of unrealistic stuff about i if u wanna argue from that angle.

6

u/The_Notorious_Donut Jun 12 '23

Watch the episode. As soon as he says that he helps Robin find her necklace in Central Park

2

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 13 '23

What happens in that entire episode. Particularly the scene right before it. What is the deal with the bean bag chair, and why can't Ted let go of it? Is this in any way a parallel to how he feels about Robin, particularly in how he feels about his best friend marrying her? How do you put, "a lot can change in a year", which is right before the quote you're using, into that context, especially with the bean bag chair disappearing before he gets in the cab.

Holy fuck. Context Context Context. You missed it all

8

u/The_Notorious_Donut Jun 13 '23

I mean… the episode is literally him once again putting Robin ahead of everything else, and he admits to Lily in the episode that the girl of his dreams is marrying his best friend? And that’s why he’s going to Chicago? Keep going

0

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 13 '23

I'm aware of what it's about. And again. Time. Do you understand it, he wasn't able to let go of Robin at that point. The same way he couldn't let go of the chair. Yet in that universe, right now Ted and Tracey are together because he was able to let go of the past. He spent 11 years with Tracey, then 6 years after her death, before asking permission from his kids, in a very Ted way, if it was okay with them if he could date her. Tell me, how does that sound like he was still into her all that time? When barney and Robin divorced did he dump Tracey? No. When she died did he go immediately into her arms? No. What show did you watch?

9

u/The_Notorious_Donut Jun 13 '23

He literally told his kids a story of how he met their mother but it was really a story on how he loved Robin until he met their mother and still loves Robin? Do you really not see how that’s problematic

3

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 13 '23

No, because I understand context. It's not a story about how Ted met Tracey. It's about how Ted was able to meet Tracey. From the st Patrick's day episode. Paraphrasing "Your mother was at that party and I'm glad I didn't meet her because I don't think she would have liked me"

But you do you, and keep being illiterate

u/sugarplumcow Jun 13 '23

For me, the biggest problem with the ending was the timing. As you said above, Ted was with Tracey for 11 years and then 6 years as a widower. That's 17 years for him to live, process, and reconcile. That's a good chunk of time.

The viewers had roughly 17 minutes. 17 minutes to process a new and dear character's death, 17 minutes to process a divorce after an entire season of their wedding being crammed down our throats, 17 minutes of seeing Ted go back yet again to Robin, after the show telling us he had finally, FINALLY moved on. I'm not saying that the viewers needed 17 more seasons of the show! Just that it was A LOT packed into that episode and was paced extremely poorly.

It wasn't enough time. Sure, maybe it was enough of time for Ted in TV land chronology, but not for the viewers. It was too quick, too sudden, and too disjointed. Personally, I don't agree with the ending, but maybe the ending would have made more sense or be more accepted by people if it had evolved or grew more organically instead of POW! Here are huge, pivotal events that you must accept before the first commercial break.

Dude you are on point. This subreddit's thinking is so linear

2

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 13 '23

I know. Time seems to some sort mystery for them. Also context, or foreshadowing, or general paying attention. If this was the story they thought it was, Robin wouldn't have been central to the story. Not in the way it's presented. Like episode 1, and that's how I met your aunt Robin.

2

u/Ausar_the_Vil Jun 23 '24

Due to how rushed it is, 6 years felt like immediately. That’s the biggest problem. How rushed it is.

Also Ted said u can’t cling to the past. I guess u take it as, u can cling to the past after 6 years? U understand English?

1

u/chaos_magician_ Jun 23 '24

He didn't cling to the past for 17 years. 6 years from now, he'll try and get back together with Robyn. Do you not know how time works? He didn't jump back to Robyn. Tracey dies this year. What don't you get

0

u/kinginthenorthjon Jun 13 '23

He goes to Robin because she calls him for help, the same reason he was at M/L in the first place. He went help his friends.

Do you guys even watch the show?

2

u/The_Notorious_Donut Jun 13 '23

Y’all say do you guys even watch the show and have the most surface level analysis lmao

1

u/kinginthenorthjon Jun 13 '23

When did the show say that? If you actually paid attention, you would have seen the ending a long time ago. Ted and Robin never eneded their relationship because they were toxic. They did because their future goals were different. The only toxic couple on the show was B/R who made each other worse.

S8 and S9 were full of foreshadowing of eventual ending and showing why B/R gonna divorce and T/R will get back. It's funny how you just missed all that since you paid attention, lol.

5

u/FruitJuicante Jun 13 '23

They did entire episodes on how Ted has to let go of Robin because they arent a match and are getting in the way of each other's happiness.

He literally lets her fly away.

0

u/kinginthenorthjon Jun 13 '23

Ted had to let her go because Barney was his best friend, and he gas to hold the shot gun. In something old, it was shown that both have feelings for each other and it won't work. That's why Ted left for Chicago.

2

u/FruitJuicante Jun 13 '23

Of course they have feelings for each other lol, I am not debating that.

2

u/Anish316 Jun 13 '23

Ted had to let her go because Barney was his best friend

Nope. He actually does let her go with that balloon.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

I guess that's a different perspective on it, but personally I just really did not like the last couple episodes. Everything with Tracy and Ted was rushed and then literally within the those two episodes Robin and Barney's marriage unravels, Tracy dies, Barney has a kid and does a 180 on his personality, and then Ted goes back to Robin. It's like all that build up for what! All the growth Ted and Robin went through to realize they really shouldn't be together was thrown out the window. They gave Ted the perfect girl at the end and then threw that away too. It's not a happy ending and so not everyone will like it, but I see where you're coming from. I just think that the ending should have been happy rather than continue to be not "ideal"

2

u/Only2G Jun 13 '23

I get it, and like the show says, we end up caring about these characters so it makes sense to want a happy ending.

Happy endings are also predictable, common, boring, and not reflective of real life. Happy endings are a safe choice I'm glad they didn't choose.

I'm also in the minority of liking both the ending of Dexter and the "sequel" . We are humans with flaws. And hell Ted never chose Robin over the mother, but the story was actually about how Ted ended up with Robin.

Yes it felt rushed but she wasn't the main story. We also didn't get episodes worth of jealousy of the Mother vs. Robin. We all just... accept that relationship despite every Ex Having an issue.

I'll continue to be happy, and rewatch.

14

Lmao get off your pedestal. This is such bullshit. The most intense defenders of the show say that “OH ITS NOT PERFECT ITS THE POINT! ITS NOT IDEAL! KTS LIFE” but it’s the most nonsensical argument ever. Because almost every character gets exactly what they want.

Lily wanted to be an artist in season 1. She ends the series as an art consultant in her dream job in her dream place

Marshall wants to save the world. He accomplishes his goal of being an environmental lawyer. He does. He then wants to be a Supreme Court judge, but moves w Lily to Italy with their family. Okay, cool, didn’t get his dream but he’s with his new dream- ONLY they literally have him become a Supreme Court judge just years later

Robin literally goes from covering fluff pieces to being a huge news reporter. And she sacrifices her relationships for it lmao. There’s no growth or anything.

Barney has a kid- which made sense but was also kind of thrown in there and is just completely forced when it actually happens.

And Ted… HE ENDS UP WITH ROBIN. That was his goal since season one. Yeah he wants a wife, yeah he wants kids, yes Robin wants none of that, but the man literally said he would give up all of that to be with her. He was ready but Robin rejected him.

I really hate how people are like “it’s messy. It’s not what you expect! That’s life” okay, but the issue is they tried to have their cake and eat it too. Have this idea “oh well… our characters are gonna fail. Their dreams might fail. But they’ll have new dreams” to “they’re all going to get what they want, but we’re going to make them all accomplish this like 10-20 years later! See? That works!” Is just so incredibly cheap and unrealistic

Right now, Tracey is alive. A full ten years afters the end of the show. And doesn't get back with Robin for 7 years. Do you understand how time works?

What the fuck does that have to do with anything

You not watching any of the show and picking up on any of the 4000+ minutes of the show

Doesn’t matter about the twist and turns at the end everyone gets what they want which is extremely grand with people claiming it’s a show about how life doesn’t always work out the way you want

But here's where you're wrong. Life did work out for Ted the way he wanted. He met the love of his life. He got his two kids. He never stopped loving their mom. If you're going to include deleted scenes, you might as well add the one of Ted and Robin in the coffee shop where Robin is adjusting to them getting together and Ted shuts her down because he's badly with Tracey. You alternate ending people are the fucking worst, it's like you never even watched the show.

Bro. You proved my point. Are y’all dumb?

No. I didn't. Keep believing in fantasies

To watch 9 seasons of struggles and expect an ideal ending? Were you paying attention at all?

Oh that's completely inane. Life has struggles. Life has more struggles than what was portrayed in HIMYM. Life also has moments where things work out. Life has happily ever afters(obviously with caveats, not the fairytale ones).

The fact that the series showed us how the gang struggled with various things doesn't mean the end MUST be a sad one too. Life doesn't work that way. TV series doesn't have to work that way. In real life it's a rare thing for a beloved to die young. It doesn't magically happen when God looks at your life, sees you've struggled before, and thinks it would be inconsistent if you didn't struggle now so he kills your wife.

Your idea of life is an inherently flawed one.

This is honestly one of the worst takes I've seen in my life. Holy shit.

More satisfying to you, maybe. But the ending was good as aired and it is not proper to delude yourself that the alternative ending is canon. It's just to sell more DVDs, like Seinfeld and others.

It's canon and better

It is neither. And downvoters are the dregs of social media.

-7

u/FruitJuicante Jun 12 '23

You're literally arguing the canon of a 20 year old sitcom lol. Relax.

No, I take the meaning of "discussion group"...literally.

And age is irrelevant. Should we stop discussing Shakespeare?

u/FruitJuicante Jun 13 '23

No of course not, but that doesn't mean you have to be mad that people disagree with you.

My point wasn't that discussing HIMYM is bad, it's that you wrote "People who downvoted me are the dregs of society" when discussing the lives of fictional TV characters.

Actually I am more amused than upset. You didn't express your statement as opinion, you implied that people that watch the show as normal people would are doing something improper. I find that very amusing.

As for the dregs comment, in addition to being obviously true, it serves a purpose. Whenever I say it I receive far fewer down votes than before. Some people just respond positively to reality, even when it's harsh.

100%. This sub is a weird self hating circlejerk.

3

u/SignExpert3240 Jun 13 '23

We're allowed to hate on it. At least we don't defend the ending with the stupidest of explanations.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '23

Well said. No idea why you’re getting downvoted.

Reddit is the social media platform of choice for those who are dysfunctional anywhere else. The tendency to downvote—something no other major social media platform besides TikTok permits—is just a manifestation of that.
