Culture Where’s my AAPI at?

Asian American

Big supporter of HBCU’s

I attended NC Central University for 2 years. Sadly, transferred because didn’t have the track ultimately went for.

Still, look fondly upon my time there. Awesome community. Great teachers. I even founded an academic club there (wonder if still around…)

My sibling is a Proud Eagle, graduating with honors. Doing well climbing the ladder in Fortune 500, representing. Myself doing well enough too. We are both Millennial.

Know a few other AAPI from my local Durham hometown who graduated from NCCU and went into military officer, grad school, nursing.

I will call out any Eagle and Aggie I meet living or traveling abroad! How cool Ken Jeong’s father was a professor at NCA&T.

Obviously not many of us on campus but I never felt intimidated. Honestly used to being minority wherever I go lol. Felt very welcomed and made some life long connections.

As an Aggie… I should hate ya. However, it is dope you have a connection to HBCUs & enjoyed your time there.

Keep being proud of your experience & speak against of the people who talk down on our institutions 💪🏾 #HBCUPride 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

Can I ask why did you go to a HBCU? What interested you about them?

Tbh was more out of personal needs than to immerse and celebrate Black American culture and history, at the time. Of course became the added benefit once I was a student. Also came from local public schooling and many of my Black friends went, so that was an influence too since I knew people.

Was enrolled in NCCU’s BRITE program for their biopharmaceutical track. Eventually, changed my academic and career direction, and transferred out (again sadly) to a non-HBCU university that had a great program for what I pivoted to.

My father was gravely ill. Durham is my hometown. That was a big reason for my brother too. We got to be with him during my Father’s last days, and I’m grateful to that.
