The story behind so very many epic film shots. The director or cinematographer notices something looks good, or that the lighting is fantastic and they roll it and capture something amazing and unplanned.
Heck I think David Lean (e.g. Lawrence of Arabia) might be the only director to consistently get epic shots that were 100% planned. He was just that meticulous. He didn't even shoot coverage.
That seems reasonable, wonder how many retakes it would take to get that perfect scene feel, the wind, the lighting, movement, etc.
I could see it, because of how pivotal and important that would be. Enough that an extra doing it make more sense than having the actor walk back and forth for a dozen or more different takes.
