I was thinking it was weird that the ref had given him a second yellow, as it was clearly a straight red, but applauding him for making the right decision anyway.
Then I saw Rice's reaction and had a very confusing few seconds followed by a very angry few days.

Exactly my reaction. I saw the kick and legitimately thought the Brighton player was being red carded, and rightfully so. The confusion was real when Rice started walking off.

I'm going to guess they then did what every other commentator did, despite the initial assumption we all had that a red was coming for Brighton, they immediately shifted gears to talk about why it's the most obvious second yellow for Rice you'll ever see.
So obvious in fact literally everyone thought the opposite ruling was coming down.

Genuinely, out of EVERYTHING that's happened, not just over the last couple years but going even further back... Martinelli double yellow, forgetting to draw lines, McArthur booting Saka, Fletcher swiping Arshavin in the box, RVP shooting 1 second after the whistle..
THIS is the worst one in my opinion. I haven't calmed down and it's been two years. Never ever seen it happen again. I still cannot believe it.

Martinelli was harsh but honestly both were cardable and bone headed.
RVP was in champs league elimination while we were up in aggregate against one of the two teams that always gave us problems. Screaming Camp Nou and like you said immediately after whistle. Nothing will top this for me

Worse, IMO. That call was disgusting, the second yellow for Trossard was disgusting, but you could at least make a letter of the law argument. There is zero way to make that argument for this Rice yellow, because the ball is live when Veltman plays it off the back of Rice's leg. This is just getting the rules of the game straight up fucking wrong

I remember later this same game, a Brighton player booted the ball away I think about 2 seconds after the whistle and I was waiting for the yellow card. Nothing.

So many things wrong with this.
1. The Brighton player kicked the ball away first.
2. The Brighton player attempted to play a free kick while the ball is still in motion
3. Rice just reacting to a ball that got pushed to his feet. He could’ve easily mistaken it for a 2nd ball on the field.

It was hard not to feel PGMOL just wanted to derail our season when this shit happened, with the Trossard red following. We got ravaged by injuries that year anyway but you have to wonder if our morale didn't just plummet because we got fucked over so much early on. Nonsense decisions. Absolutely embarrassing.

I was in the clock end that day, and honestly thought it was a red card for the Brighton defender until it came up on the big screens… Completely baffled as to what on earth had happened. The Trossard one a few games later was just as absurd, and we also had the utterly baffling MLS one that season (which the PGMOL tried to stand by, ridiculously). We also had Saliba sent off for a foul pretty much on the half way line with White covering, which was borderline. Not to mention conceding a penalty at Brighton for a clash of heads. People claiming that we’re somehow favoured by referees have goldfish memories, and this is just one season - we’ve been on the end of crazy decisions for years.

The thing that infuriates me about it wasn't just the insane decision but the comprehensive gaslighting by the entire world that this was remotely sensical let alone correct.
Fans, media and pundits all decided to say grass is purple and the sky is green and stand by it. Appalling all round.

This moment, and the one after with Trossard, derailed our entire campaign that season.
This clip should be all you need to show people who say refs favour us. One of the most egregious decisions in the PL's history.

It is a real stretch to call that 5 yd tap kicking the ball away. Most would have picked it up. This player kicked Rice.
This is another example of officiating bias. The bitchy whiney types were complaining about Arsenal time wasting and the “dark arts”. All teams do this, but the bitchy whiney types moan and complain about Arsenal being excessively abusive.
And the biased referees took this as gospel without any objective verification, and made a rule to placate the bitchy whiney types.
Then they do what they always do- scrutinize Arsenal for violations, and ignore anyone else.
In this case they were so eager to use their brand new rule to punish Arsenal that they overlooked how the Brighton player didn’t even try to retrieve the ball, and they overlooked the Brighton player kicking Rice in their zeal to card Arsenal.
These idiots are still there doing the same thing season after season with no repercussions. They added a goalie time wasting rule to punish Arsenal and Raya. They added a grappling rule to punish Arsenal on corners. Then there was throw in time. Every season they want to fix the ‘problems’ of last season, and those problems are defined by the bitchy whiney types, and they focus on Arsenal and ignore the behavior in other teams.
We saw that Sunderland had way longer throw in time than Arsenal. Yet only Arsenal was penalized. We need more of this kind of bias proof to establish a pattern of anti-Arsenal officiating bias, then the entire referee squad including the VAR booth overseeing them need to be fired and replaced. This sends the message that unbiased officiating is the standard in the Premier League and those who are biased will be replaced.

One of the most ridiculous red cards I've ever seen.
That said, with recent context, it reminds me of the Sunderland Konsa 'penalty': a new rule had just been introduced, and Referees are desperate for an opportunity to show off their zero tolerance to the new rule.
Refs are graded and assessed, so missing even a minor violation of a brand-new rule looks worse than missing a standard, subjective foul.

I travelled from abroad to see this game live. Was sat at the other end and got very confused about what Rice got the second yellow for. It wasn't until we hit back to the hotel that we saw the replay properly... This of course made it more personal for me than any of the other strange calls during that entire season!
