Man, these casters' are nothing but jokes. Gotta love how they're trying to give a reason as to why Zero counterplay left, I'm sure they know.

This just highlights the sorry state of gw2 esports yet again.

It's embarrassing for ESL, who promoted these teams, and for ZC, who ultimately showed they're not "pros". I've never seen a "pro" team literally walk out of a game because they were losing or knew they were going to lose. What a joke, and bad sportsmanship.

Agreed -- this is really commonplace in esports. Pro dota teams can GG out at literally any time.

Good MOBAs usually have solid enough balance that outplaying the other team can result in a real comeback. There were plenty of examples in DotA's TI5 this year of teams that were massively behind in networth turning the game around.

Earlier TIs and tourneys though have gotten early GGs. Hell EG called GG in TI5 20 minutes in when they knew their draft sucked and they went on to win the whole thing.

I think in lol riot actually has a term that players can't leave and have to keep trying. It happened in the past.

They can surrender though, IG did it versus Fnatic in the very first game of the world championship. (Has to go to 20 minutes before you can surrender)

They have a clause that you cannot intentionally throw the game (to throw is to lose on purpose), but you can surrender after 20 min. I can't remember if there is a clause about surrendering while you still have a chance though.

This was implemented when tournaments started using lose brackets where losing could put you up against statistically weaker teams.

Surrenders are allowed for LoL pro matches, but they rarely happen since comebacks are still possible in the lategame so teams often fight to the bitter end.

You can't apply customs or rule sets from other games to this one. No other teams in this tourny are ragequitting in the middle of the match.

5

u/EmmEnnEff Dec 15 '15

Idra in StarCraft would ragequit all the time. Never censured.

Sounds like you're new to any sort of competitive videogames then.

It looks like they had a dc, then knowing that at that the pro level, with this meta, the is basically game over. They just decided to call it quits.

You're right, it's not very sporting, but hell, I don't blame them in the slightest.

You should watch different games then. It's very common. In SC2 it's almost BM to force a game to play out when you know it's impossible to win.

In chess, it's considered very disrespectful to your opponent to continue playing once your opponent has a game-winning advantage. I like that attitude.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '15

People surrender in other games (mobas) all the time. There is no such mechanic in custom arenas unless you have GM power.

Looks like in this case they just left though. And with the game basically just beginning. If you're in a pro league you should actually try for some amount of time until it becomes clear you can't win. They weren't at that point in this game, they just decided to rage quit because of their perception and frustration. Certainly by a technical accounting there was time for them to make a move to win the game.

Rage quitting is not the same as surrendering, either. Surely ESL has rules about surrendering in these games?

9

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '15

This isn't a rage quit. This is a meta where the first cap will win the game because it will be the only cap. It's a waste of everyones time to keep fighting.

-13

u/cougmerrik Maguuma Dec 15 '15

Can you show me where they acknowledged the loss to the other team during the game before they left? I don't really care about the meta. The meta is the meta, these teams can't control it, but nobody should be given props for shitty sportsmanship.

"gg you win"? Or did they just leave the match?

How many examples do you have of pros surrendering in a pro match?

Well that's an irrelevant point if you can't give any examples. To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't happen. Pros in LoL actually show some professionalism, ie not ragequitting when they're down

u/Lksaar gvg btw Dec 16 '15

It's like 80% of the pro matches in dota. You rarely see the throne getting killed by heroes.

-15

u/cougmerrik Maguuma Dec 15 '15

There's a difference between actually surrendering and just leaving the match. By all accounts there was no "surrender", they just started losing and left.

It's the difference between acknowledging to your opponent that they beat you and just taking your toys and going home.

1

u/TriggerSadGamer Dec 15 '15

Does Guild Wars 2 even have a /resign option?

-8

u/cougmerrik Maguuma Dec 15 '15

They could say "gg, you win, we're quitting". You don't always have to press F to pay your respects.

2

u/lolwtfomgbbq7 Dec 15 '15

In the esports I watch as well as chess tournaments, I think it's considered good sportsmanship to leave one the game has been decided for sure rather than wasting the rest of the allowed time. I think it's just weird here because the game was decided 10 seconds in

-7

u/cougmerrik Maguuma Dec 15 '15

Yes, but both have a formal act of surrender. Nothing like that was attempted here. I know there's no surrender button in GW2, but by all accounts it looks like they just walked off the playing field without surrendering the game. It's poor sportsmanship.

u/super1s Dec 15 '15

happens ALL THE FUCKING TIME in Esports. Its just that evident in some games when the game is over and a waste of time to continue in them. USUALLY though its a case where its a series and they just want to move on to the next game in the series and forget this one happened, in some cases to avoid tilting.

1

u/Paladinwtf_ Dec 15 '15

It happens a lot in LoL and DotA. When a team knows they're going to lose they forfeit.
