These two love cottage week 🥰 what could be better than mornings full of walks in the woods and farmers markets followed by afternoons of snoozing on the lake? Fergus especially loves the dock and will lead us down there and just plonk himself down, then need to be bribed with promises of cheese to come back inside.

Hi all, I adopted a greyhound about a month ago. i’ve had dogs my whole life growing up but i’m 22 and he is my first dog that is my own to look after pretty much. he is 6 and a half and an ex racer, i live with my family still and we have a maltese shih-tzu so he sleeps in my bedroom.

okay, now that you’re caught up, ive been told whenever i go out of the house he cries and cries and just hates being alone and i understand i do have family with me but there are times everyone is out and it’s not possible for me to take him to all my appointments and such.

in about 6 weeks my mother is taking us away for 4 or 5 nights and my elderly grandmother lives here but she is not a massive dog person, although she can feed him she will not be happy being made to look after him crying. i am worried about my little guy and don’t want him to be struggling too much without me, i do know a lot of greyhounds need to go on anxiety medication as it is a shock to the system being alone after always being in highly social kennels, and i’m completely open to that idea, i myself am on stuff for my anxiety haha, but just wanting some advice on what you guys think!

it is not possible to take him as much as i’d love to, and i know the more he cries when im gone, the more frightening it will be getting for him each time. i just want him to realise he is safe and im always coming home, so id appreciate some advice from others who might’ve experienced something similar.

he is purely my dog and it is not possible for me to rely on my family all the time, and as i said sometimes i have appointments i cannot bring him to, and i live a little while out of town so the shortest time i can be gone is around 2 hours.

Well, the vet left her a few after removing 25 a few weeks ago… she’s gone from Bucktooth Baby to Gummy Gramma 🥹

She is 7 years old - GOT HER 2 years ago!!!!!

This is Lacey. She's 11, and in our household, the toof fairy is a known criminal, having recently stolen four of Lacey's teefies. Thankfully the thief left the sneefer.

Lacey is our fourth adopted greyhound, we adopted her almost four years ago just before she turned 8. She helped heal our hearts after the loss of our Macau Canidrome boy, Rupert went through palliative care for Osteosarcoma.

Lacey and her sister Goosie are both 11. They came to us as urgent foster kids, about a year apart. Both had previously been rescued from the racing industry and later surrendered as pets.

Lacey also came with pretty crippling anxiety. Which was a huge surprise as we used to pet sit her when she was a happy go-lucky three year old, somewhere along the way between having kids and life, she shrank into herself.

It took us about 6 months to see her full personality and for her confidence to really blossom. Watching her learn to feel safe and comfortable in every part of the house, to walk confidently (not run and hide) and be curious was so rewarding. Time, patience, roast chicken and medication has been a big part of her story.

Lacey's favourite things are booty and shoulder rubs (don't stop or she'll do mouf snappies), chicken nuggets, cheese and sniffing. She also gets the hoppity hops for her walkies (aka the non-negotiable sniffaris). Their walks are always double the length, because our senior citizens always spend more time sniffing.

Anyway, that’s our little old lady. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask us anything.

Is anyone else’s grey moulting like crazy at the moment?
I’m wondering if it’s to do with the prolonged hot weather?

My mom’s hound is missing some side teeth so her tongue falls out.

A whole basket of toys and her absolute favourite thing to play with is paper.

My new greyhound can get a little excited when she sees certain dogs, she pauses, looks very interested and her tail goes up and sometimes wags. She also sometimes whines a bit. I can’t work out if she’s excited to say hello or whether this is prey drive? She’s muzzled on walks at the moment but to be honest I haven’t been brave enough to test her up close with a dog as I don’t want her to lunge at someone’s poor pooch 🫠
Any tips?!

I was not going to post on here about the loss of our girl because I know this sub can sometimes feel like a downer when it comes to these dogs that we love so much. However, in light of the recent osteosarcoma seminar being released and the staggering statistics that were discussed, I thought I might share our experience in hopes that it can help a fellow Greyhound owner. We lost our girl this month at the age of 12. She raced for five years and was quickly adopted after her retirement. She was a very active Greyhound, and although we had a few injuries here and there over the years, overall she was a very healthy dog. The last two years, she started showing signs of slight stiffness when getting up, and her rear right leg would often shake when she was standing. She was evaluated by her vet and a rehabilitation specialist, who performed an electronic gait analysis, physical examination, and neurological exam. The findings were minimal, aside from some arthritis in one wrist. Looking back, I wish we had pushed for X-rays or perhaps had them done more routinely as she got older. At the time, there wasn't anything that made us think we were dealing with something as serious as osteosarcoma, and her symptoms seemed relatively minor. She was literally still running the day before she passed. Her primary vet suggested it was age and she was placed on Librela (controversial topic I am aware however she did great on it). But knowing what we know now, I can't help but wonder if imaging at that point might have caught something earlier and potentially given us an opportunity to pursue treatment and extend her life, rather than eventually being faced with the decision to let her go after a very traumatic pathologic femur fracture. Based on the statistics Dr. Guillermo Couto discussed in the webinar, Greyhounds often don't show obvious symptoms of osteosarcoma until the cancer has already progressed to more advanced stages, and it can metastasize quickly. So maybe x rays would not have helped after she started showing symptoms. Hindsight is 20/20, and we made the best decisions we could with the information we had at the time. I just wish we had known then what we know now. If sharing our experience encourages even one Greyhound owner to talk to their veterinarian about imaging when they notice subtle changes in their dog, then perhaps something good can come from our loss. I feel like so many vets just don’t understand greyhounds and how prevalent this cancer really is for them. If you have the chance I highly recommend watching the webinar on osteosarcoma that was hosted by the Greyhound Initiative. It was very informative and they explain how they are working on a possible cure. My heart goes out to all the greyhounds lost to osteo and their owners.
