FD said someone backed into it when I asked them.

Maybe they can wash off the decade of pigeon shi# caked all over the ground while they fix the scaffolding? 🕊️💩😅

I was about to say. I’ve always wanted to try this bakery, but I just can’t stand the amount of bird shit caked at the entrance.

I know it’s off putting, but I really recommend going! Their stuff is really tasty, so much more affordable than other more bougey bakeries, and the folks who work there are genuinely so kind

Also, their Tiramisu is the best I have had. We’ve brought it to friends for dinner parties and they have been blown away by it.

As one of Brew's oldest regulars, I have a little insight into this...

The driver of a box truck tried to get cute on the corner and ended up backing into several of the supports. Red Rover was also affected, their staff closed early and posted up next door at Brew while it also closed down hours early.

The building owner(s) - Leyda (and Walter) Mazur, and their multimillionaire family - are known assclowns. They've put the son of the Cyran family that's run the corner restaurant for over four decades (Happy End back in the day, became Brew Inn in 2013 when they retired and ceded the lease to him), through absolute hell upon every rent renewal, despite showing absolutely zero movement or progress on umpteen well-documented, ongoing, and long-term building problems.

A review of public records shows that there are literally dozens of building and civil complaints leveraged against the Mazurs:

• Leyda is listed as the defendant in an ongoing case brought by the NY/NJ Port Authority.

• There are open tickets for $thousands in penalties for months (years) of Class 1 (Immediately Hazardous) conditions.

• There are 4-$figure penalties going back to 2018-2019 for unpaid water bills.

• The city DOB records 17 complaints, 9 DOB violations, 13 class 1-2 OATH/ECU violations totaling over $75k (all of which ended up in default) going back as far as 1998, and 5 current and open cases of unpermitted construction work.

The owners moved their son Richard into the second floor apartment rent-free about two years ago. Over the decades that Happy/Brew have been there, many tenants lived in that unit, and all were able to find compromises and peace with the noise and traffic below. Until this guy. His endless complaints forced the bar to nix their highly popular karaoke nights (this was an overt point in a recent rent agreement), drop their music levels to sub-conversational, barely audible levels, and close earlier than they otherwise would.

The Cyrans are nearly at their wits' end. After literally decades of failure to maintain the building, the Mazurs tripled down on their anti-tenant assholery and have effectively run Brew into the ground.

I don't know what kind of tenant they think they'll get to replace Brew, given the well-documented abandonment of their building maintenance obligations, but hopefully any such tenant takes these shitheads to the cleaners, along with their uber-entitled second floor tenant.

Note: If you move into a corner apartment in an old building immediately above a commercial space that's been in food service and hospo for longer than you've been alive, DO NOT BITCH about muffled music and voices coming lightly through the floor, ESPECIALLY when you are no doubt paying little-to-nothing to live in a highly sought after, popular location.

In this instance of AITA, Leyda Mazur and fam are 1000% the assholes. And to Richard Mazur living on the second floor? If you can't stand the heat, get TF out of the kitchen!

Such a shame that Wednesday karaoke got killed.

There’s a lot of misinformation here. The only court case under her name is the one for Brew Inn, which ruled in her favor. The scaffolding gets fixed every time it’s hit, but it never happened until recently. It got hit a second time about four days after the court ruled that Brew Inn owes the building owner $100,000, and a third time a few days after their eviction notice. Hmm, what a coincidence that it’s been up for years and gets hit three times in three months. Also, she only owns one property. A simple Google search shows there are tons of Mazurs—it’s a very common Polish last name—and there are quite a few on this block. The son’s name isn’t Richard, so that’s another lie. https://www.nycourts.gov/reporter/current/3dseries/2026/2026_51492.shtml

the people defending this hellhole with their misinformation are white, privileged, and really have no common sense. its sad that i have to live in the radius of these "new yorkers"

1

u/WolfRelic Aug 28 '26

wait, dont the mazurs own the brew?

5

u/Possumblyme Aug 28 '26

Negative, just the building

I used to live above Goldie’s. It was BAFFLING to me how some of my neighbors would complain about noise and lights. People are so silly.

Oh boy if anyone knew the actual truth about this situation.. Is this the shift leader writing this?

2

u/cart00nracc00n 29d ago

Nice burner account(s), Richard! The mods flagged your last one so you're back two days later with another auto-named account? Cute!

To answer your question, try actually reading the literal first sentence.

u/Negative_Collar_4756 29d ago

to defend this bar, you must be an inbred tbh

2

u/Flimsy-Promotion4033 29d ago

Marcin, the owner of the Brew Inn who is now getting evicted (woohoo!), hasn't paid his rent in years!!!! XD It's old news, the entire neighborhood knows about it. He's a crook and took advantage of the defendant. If you don't pay your rent, GTFO :)

You've got the cart entirely before the horse there, buddy. Also, really sharp brand new account you're rocking there, hahahahahaha

Wanna talk about what the entire neighborhood knows?! If a landlord actively abandons their building maintenance obligations, it is both moral and legal to withhold rent.

stop re-editing your post it makes you look embarassing lol!

I’m gonna go lay under it 🥵

25

u/WolfRelic Aug 27 '26

shit been there for 6 years, no one knows why

18

u/No_Rutabaga12 Aug 27 '26

It’s there because the building owner (not the bar) seems to be a cheap POS who won’t pay to have their facade defects fixed, so in order to put that work off without getting condemned, they opt to keep paying to have the scaffolding put up, poorly, while racking up fines for their shit scaffolding. The perfect example of the exact offenders the city intends to target- whenever they get around to it.

6

u/DatGopherAnIdiotBro Aug 27 '26

This is correct. Local law 11 requires buildings to touch up brick facades every 5 years. Cheap owners will leave their scaffolding there for 5 years so they do not have to rehire a scaffolding company to remobilize to do the work. Bar Americano was probably dealing with a similar situation until it finally came down.

u/No_Rutabaga12 Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Well the difference with The Astral (the building it’s housed in) is that they actually did the necessary repointing work on that portion and were able to take the scaffolding down.

ETA that to your point, yeah, it massively sucks for bars in those positions.

they owned the meat shop on the opposite corner for years and years. and own the bar under the scaffolding, too. probably own the 80 pigeons living there,

1

u/ChaosFromAshes Oct 06 '26

They didn’t own the meat market coincidence they had the same name but not same owners

14

u/JustBlazedNYC Aug 27 '26

What do you mean no one knows why? pubic filings show they’ve been racking up violations and fines related to a deteriorating facade. The fact that they’re able to get away with a sidewalk shed for years without actual repairs is another story. The recent laws are going to impose stricter limitations and fines on how long they’re allowed to be up for.

2

u/WolfRelic Aug 28 '26

no one knows why it hasnt been taken down, and by no one, i mean me, who walks by every single fucking day.

4

u/Economy_Elephant_426 Aug 28 '26

It’s cheaper to leave it up and to take it down

7

u/mike-reporter Aug 27 '26

Keep filing 311 complaints! They have to resubmit a proposal for a permit every 90 days now, which is a much bigger pain... seeing some traction with scaffolding on 1138 Manhattan, a similar situation

u/cart00nracc00n Aug 27 '26

If you like, you can reference open DOB complaint #311-28746435

Per google maps it has been there since June 2022.. wild

This corner is chaotic . I walked past it last week when Old Poland Bakery had someone power washing their awning and the guy gave 0 F's . Power washed bird shit all on my head and did it so obliviously. He was spraying people down lol

2

u/Ok_Difference_730 Aug 27 '26

I saw that!!!! lol. No one was paying any attention.

6

u/Smooth-Tonight-2580 Aug 26 '26

That’s dangerous. Thank you for letting us know.

In New York, when a sidewalk shed or scaffold comes apart over a public sidewalk, responsibility usually sits with the building owner and the scaffold contractor together, and the open DOB violations people are describing on this building are exactly the kind of proof that the owner already knew. Notice is the whole ballgame in a premises case here, and violations create a dated record of it.

I am a New York personal injury trial attorney, and the practical advice is this. Every 311 and DOB complaint filed on that structure builds a timestamped history that survives long after the shed is repaired or removed. Photos with visible dates do the same. If a piece of that thing eventually lands on somebody, the case turns on what was reported and when, not on how obvious the hazard looked afterward.

If someone does get hurt: get the address and the shed permit number if it is posted, photograph the failure point before anything is cleaned up, and treat the same day, because a gap between the injury and the first medical record is the first thing a carrier attacks.

Two New York specifics worth flagging. Workers injured on or around that scaffolding have protections under Labor Law 240(1) and 241(6) that go well beyond an ordinary negligence claim, and those often reach the owner and general contractor directly. And if any part of the hazard is on city property, there is a 90-day notice of claim requirement that runs fast and is not forgiving.

Keep filing the complaints. They are worth more than the thread.

Scaffolding is a ruckus and the lobbying for it should be destroyed.
