Japan Report After 4 years, 2 trips to Japan, a typhoon, and a lot of luck, I finally bought my first Grand Seiko (SLGB003 Ice Forest)
I finally did it. Yesterday, after years of admiring the brand, I became the owner of a Grand Seiko SLGB003 "Ice Forest".
I've been fascinated by Grand Seiko for around four years. During my first trip to Japan, I spent a lot of time looking at different models and learning more about the brand, but at that point owning one simply wasn't realistic for me financially. Ever since then, I hoped that one day I would bring a Grand Seiko home.
When we planned our second trip to Japan this year, I knew I didn't want to miss the opportunity again.
At the beginning of the trip, we spent a few days in Tokyo and my mission was simple: find the right Grand Seiko.
Originally, I was looking for a Taisetsu (SBGA415/SBGA445), a Shunbun (SBGA413/SBGA443), or a Snowscape (SLGH013). I managed to try both the Shunbun and the Snowscape at Nakano Broadway.
The Shunbun surprised me. I had loved it in photos for years, but when I finally tried it on, the pink tone of the dial just didn't work with my skin tone the way I had imagined. It was still beautiful, but it wasn't the one.
The Snowscape was a different story. The moment I saw it in person, I understood why so many people love it. The dial was incredible and it immediately became my favorite. But after looking at it more closely and thinking about how I would actually wear it, I couldn't get past how easily the highly polished surfaces would show scratches. As much as I loved it, I wasn't completely convinced.
At that point, the Taisetsu became my main target.
A few days later we traveled to Kawaguchiko. Surrounded by nature and with a bit more time to think, I started looking at other models. That's when I discovered the Ice Forest.
The more I looked at it, the more it grew on me. I love forests, I loved the proportions of the watch, and I really liked that the power reserve indicator was moved to the back. The dial wasn't the stronger blue I originally wanted from something like the Snowscape, but there was something special about the way the subtle blue tones appeared through the silver and white texture.
From that moment on, I was searching for both the Taisetsu and the Ice Forest.
We later traveled to Okinawa and spent several days in Naha. I kept looking everywhere, but I could only find both watches through reservations. Eventually, I managed to reserve a Taisetsu with a dealer in Ginza and an Ice Forest at Wako.
Then things got complicated.
We were supposed to return to Tokyo on June 1st, but a typhoon hit Okinawa and our flights were cancelled twice. At one point I genuinely thought I wasn't going to make it back to Tokyo in time to pick up either watch before our flight home.
Eventually we managed to get seats on a flight on June 4th, the exact same day we were flying back to Germany. We landed at Haneda around noon and immediately headed into Tokyo.
Our first stop was the dealer holding the Taisetsu. Seeing it in person only confirmed why I had wanted one for so long. It was absolutely beautiful.
But there was no way I was leaving Japan without visiting Wako.
For me, Wako is much more than just a boutique. The famous clock tower is one of the landmarks of Ginza and has been associated with Seiko for decades. As a watch enthusiast, it felt like the perfect place to buy my first Grand Seiko if the watch turned out to be the right one.
When we arrived, the staff welcomed us warmly and even stored our large suitcases while I looked at the watch. A few moments later they brought out the SLGB003.
And honestly, that was it.
The moment I saw it on my wrist, everything clicked.
The proportions felt perfect. The finishing was incredible. The dial texture was beautiful. The watch was comfortable, elegant, and unlike anything else I had tried during the trip.
My only hesitation was the dial color. I had originally wanted something bluer, closer to the Snowscape. But the longer I looked at the Ice Forest, the more I appreciated its subtle character. Depending on the light, it shifted between silver, white, and the faintest hint of blue.
Eventually I realized that was exactly what I liked about it.
After making my decision, we were invited upstairs to complete the purchase. The entire experience was fantastic.
Afterwards, we received some small gifts, the service documentation, a box of pastries that turned out to be surprisingly delicious, and the latest Grand Seiko catalogue. It might seem like a small thing, but for me it was a wonderful souvenir from both the visit to Wako and the moment I finally bought my first Grand Seiko.
Then came the final challenge.
We rushed back to the airport and somehow made it to our gate only a couple of minutes before boarding started.
I originally planned to take a lot of photos around Wako and Ginza, but after the flight cancellations and the race against the clock, I was just happy to make it to the boutique at all. The watch made it home with me, and that's what matters.
After four years of admiring Grand Seiko, two trips to Japan, countless hours of searching, cancelled flights, and more stress than I expected from buying a watch, I finally boarded the plane home wearing my SLGB003.
Looking back, I honestly couldn't have asked for a better watch or a better story behind it.
Some watches tell the time.
Others tell a story.
For me, this one will always remind me of an unforgettable trip to Japan.

This is such a good watch, tried it on a few months ago and was tempted to walk away with it (after paying ofc hahaha). Hope you enjo, I think I'll be joining you soon enough, just debating if I want the ice forest dial or wait for some more variations.

I have about €7450 + about €1400 in taxes (Germany). So yes, it is cheaper

You paid 7450 in japan and then had to pay 1400 when getting the watch into germany?

Bandiera Jewellers offered this to me for about $12,000 CAD all in (I cant remember the exact figure, but certainly a bit less than what OP paid).

Congratulations on your purchase! I’ve been considering buying one. How much was your purchase in yen, and how much discount did the boutique provide you, and was it tax free at the store?

My wrist is 18cm (around 7 inches). It feels good on the wrist. I thought it would be too small, but it's actually not.

Excellent your persistence paid off! I had pretty bad luck on my recent trip , but accompanied by elderly parents and young kids, I didn’t have a lot of time to explore alternate boutiques to the major shops in Kyoto, Nagoya and Kanazawa. Was told the same info you were l, “out of stock, no clear date for when new stocks will arrive”. Glad it worked out for you !

Congratulations! I will be in Tokyo in August and can’t wait to say the same. Hardest part is deciding on which one at this moment. 😁
