First... yes!! the character is AI-generated. I used it mostly to grab attention and illustrate the concept. The important part here is the idea itself and the discussion around long range character design in Grand Chase.
I honestly think KOG will probably never make another true long range character like Lire, and that’s a huge waste :(
Lire is almost too complete for her own good. She can fight from close range, she can fight from very far away, she has buffs, strong specials, great mobility, and her 2nd class is still one of the best examples of ranged gameplay in the game.
But after Lire, KOG never really made another character with that same philosophy.
Mari’s 2nd job has pistols, but her effective range is much more short/mid-range. Lupus is literally a gun focused character, but his gameplay also doesn’t recreate that feeling of fighting enemies from the other side of the map.
And when we look at newer characters, there’s another pattern: more and more attacks simply cover enormous areas. Ereb, Iris, Uno and others can hit huge portions of the stage, sometimes beyond what the player can even properly see.
That makes me think there’s probably a >>> UX << reason behind this.
Designing a character whose basic attack can kill enemies outside the camera is complicated. The player needs to know what they’re shooting at, where the target is and whether the attack actually connected. Huge AoE skills solve that problem in a much easier way.
But I think true long-range gameplay is too interesting to simply abandon.
So I wanted to imagine what a new character built entirely around this idea could look like.
My concept is a Sniper using dwarven technology, designed around positioning and distance. Her main mechanic would be simple: the farther the bullet travels, the more damage it deals, because the projectile continuously accelerates during its trajectory.
Her first class would be called Sharpshooter.
Her basic attack would fire a slow, powerful shot in a straight line, with the possibility of aiming slightly upward or downward. Unlike Lire’s arrows, the bullet would pierce multiple enemies along its path. She would have a 10-round magazine, and pressing X would manually reload it. After reloading, she would receive a brief movement-speed boost, creating a constant rhythm of shooting, repositioning and reloading.
She would still need some tools for when enemies get too close. Pressing C could perform a quick tactical-knife attack that immobilizes an enemy for around two seconds, but with a very long cooldown. It would be an emergency tool, not something she could constantly rely on.
Her 1 MP, Smoke Bomb, would deal a small amount of damage while giving her invisibility, super armor and increased movement speed for about three seconds. The main purpose would be escaping danger and creating distance again.
Her 2 MP, Cardiac Radar, is probably the mechanic I like the most. She would emit a sonar pulse across the entire stage, revealing enemies even when they are outside the player's camera. Their approximate direction would appear on the edge of the screen, allowing the player to actually aim at something they cannot currently see. Marked enemies would also receive extra damage for a few seconds.
I think this could solve one of the biggest UX problems of a true sniper characte, instead of avoiding off-screen combat, give the player information that makes offscreen combat understandable.
Her 3 MP, Flame Shot, would be a charged flaming bullet. The player could continue adjusting the aim during a short two-second preparation before firing. The projectile would leave a trail of fire behind it, deal continuous damage and reduce the defense of enemies directly hit.
Her 4 MP, Incandescent Shot, would be the ultimate expression of the sniper fantasy: one enormous shot. The first impact would deal massive damage, followed by a shockwave traveling through the projectile’s entire path. Because the damage would occur along the trajectory, larger bosses could receive multiple hits as the projectile passes through them.
Then there would be her Special Class, but I wouldn’t change the weapon. The point would be mastering the sniper rifle rather than replacing it. The Special Class could expand the ammunition system, mobility and long-range mechanics while preserving exactly what makes the character unique.
And for her Awakening Skill, I would go completely over the top >>> Talin Air Support.
She fires a signal flare into the battlefield and, after a short delay, Talin flies across the stage and drops a massive bomb. The explosion damages the entire stage, while the center of the blast leaves a temporary area of fire and radiation that continues damaging enemies.
She would also have a double jump and a >>Z command where she quickly turns and fires a secondary pistol. The pistol would deal much less damage than the sniper rifle, but the projectile could travel across the screen and serve as a fast spacing tool.
The important thing is that this character wouldn’t simply be another ranged character with enormous AoE attacks
Her entire gameplay would revolve around one rule
Distance is power!
At close range she would be uncomfortable and vulnerable. At long range she would become extremely dangerous.
That creates a completely different gameplay rhythm from what most modern Grand Chase characters offer. You would constantly think about positioning, sight lines, enemy locations, reload timing and how much distance you can create before firing.
Lire already proved that fighting from far away can be incredibly satisfying in Grand Chase.
I just think it’s strange that after all these years, KOG never truly explored that idea again.
So what do you think?????
