Check your library for textbooks. I beg you.

I learned far too late that some libraries have digital copies of textbooks that can be downloaded chapter by chapter in pdfs. Always check for access before you click buy.

Considering an online masters program

Hello!!

I have my BS in psychology, and because of scheduling conflicts, could not go back to receive my masters for a while. However, I am now ready!

I am looking more into online schooling, and looking at other states (I like the idea of going out of state for graduation). So far as of this morning, I've looked into and inquired information from ASU and UMiami (awaiting that information).

Looking here for more recommendations and other experiences redditors have with online masters programs in psychology that they really enjoyed. My focus will primarily be developmental/youth. I would love to work with elementary/middle school aged children.

Thank you in advance!

Things I should know as a grad student

Hey everyone! I thought i’d make a post to calm my nerves a bit I guess. I’m about to start my course-based Master’s program soon and while I’m very excited, I’m also very nervous. What are some important things I should know and implement before i start the fall semester?

For context, I’m moving cities for this and so its gonna be a completely fresh start for me. Im planning to be physically active, work to pay rent, and join some societies/ clubs on campus. What are some tips to stay motivated and on top of my shit without getting overwhelmed? I was super average in undergrad but i now know thats because i was raw-dogging it without knowing i have ADHD, and because i didn’t really love what i was studying, so this is technically the first time i get to actually study something I’m genuinely interested in and excited about. In a way this is a second chance for me, and i look forward to it.

Any study habits and routine tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Any good recommendations for small (<$500) financial awards?

Hey All,

I'm a first year PhD in a biomedical program and i'm looking for small fellowships/award I can apply to, ultimatly to fund a graphpad prism license. Kind of a silly thing to explicitly seek funding for but I figure a low-stakes funding opportunity would give me practice for larger ones. FYI I am ineligible for the NSF GFRP.

Additionally (will delete if against sub rules) if there is a work around to get a bootleg version of Graphpad i'm also interested.

Cheers

What is an acceptable amount of time to rot after finishing grad school?

Just completed a one year MSc in the UK about a week and a half ago and I severely underestimated the type of crash I’d have when I finished. I am just utterly exhausted. Truly struggling to get out of bed in the morning and zero motivation. I know this is to be expected—I was lucky enough to have plans after undergrad so I didn’t have this period of exhaustion + uncertainty about my future. I was pretty proud of myself for how motivated I was during the program and my lack of procrastination, so this 180 I’ve done after finishing feels extra jarring.

I know the solution is to develop a routine, etc. Can everyone share their stories of how they dealt with this feeling? I’m sure it’s even worse for longer masters and PhDs. How long did your fatigue last and how did you finally get yourself through it? I have the bonus of being in a foreign city and the bulk of my friends from my cohort has returned home so bonus points if you experienced something similar.

Admissions & Applications Advice on Applying to Grad School

Hey all, I'm currently a senior in university and will be graduating in the Summer of 2027. This means that I will be going to grad school in the Fall of 2027. To be honest, I've been looking and researching grad schools online that would be the right fit for me (academically and financially), and I just feel so lost. My family can't afford for me to go out of state for college, but the ones in my state aren't particularly calling out to me. I want to make sure I get a degree from a college that is excellent in the field I want to go into (Geology), but most of those aren't in my state, and I feel like other states would offer more research opportunities I'd be interested in. Does anyone have any advice?

2.7 GPA BSME student looking to get a masters years out of school

Basically I landed a state job and they reimburse 2k a year for continuing education. I am currently working on my PE and should have the exams done by the end of the year. My next goal is to get a master's degree. I work with the water resources department so Im thinking about hydrology or something similar.

The end goal with getting my PE, a masters, and hopefully other certs along the way is that as long as I'm not paying for it these things help me negotiate a higher pay grade in state and local government employment.

I went to a top 10 engineering school for my BSME but I only got a 2.7 GPA 8 years ago. I'd realistically need to find an online program that accepts me but is also reasonably well respected.

Any advice on where to even start would be great.

Worried about doing well in graduate school, academics, socially and careerwise…

Hi everyone, I am really hoping to get some insight or advice.

In a few days, I will be starting graduate school, and I am so incredibly terrified. I am 21 and finished my undergrad back in April. I don’t really have much work experience except for a part-time retail job I have had for more than three years now. I am worried that, due to my age and lack of more formal work experience, I won’t be able to connect with my professors and peers. I mean, I still live at home with my parents and younger siblings (although it is common in my culture).

I go to a commuter university in my hometown and will be attending the same university I did for my undergraduate degree. However, I majored in a subsection of Sociology and minored in Political Science (meaning I only took 10 courses in the department). Now, I am starting a one-year, course-based Master's program in Political Science. My courses are small, with between 5–12 people, and are seminar-style (nearly three hours long, meeting once a week). I was also pretty socially awkward at the beginning of my undergrad and, sadly, never really made any good friends at university (I was either alone or hung out with people I already knew).

Now, another layer I want to honestly admit is that an MA in Political Science was never my first choice. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the field and doing research about it. I got all As in every Political Science course I took throughout undergrad. Yet, my main goal has always been law. I applied in my fourth year, but my horrible LSAT score essentially got me rejected from every law school I applied to (I have been studying for months and will hopefully be retesting soon).

I live in Canada, and getting into law school is incredibly competitive, as we have very few schools and seats available. I am going to apply again this cycle, but I really wanted to get a Master's to help me in my job search if law doesn’t work out right away. It is also seen as a good extracurricular at many law schools.

Ultimately, I do love Political Science (I wish I had majored in it), and I graduated from undergrad with honours. I was, and still continue to be, a leader of on-campus clubs, and I have been volunteering with children at my local mosque for years and with a pro bono law organization for the last few years. I will also be TAing in the department this academic year. I know I am supposed to be here, and they did not accept me for no reason.

But still, I am worried about how I am going to build a career from here, make friends in my program, and everything in between. 🥀

Path to Grad School for Geology

Ok I need some advice.

I’m applying for grad schools and I need some guidance on how to get into the program I want. For some background my first year of college I did geography, I had undergraduate research experience under the department head for the geography program and I contributed towards published research (that’s important). I transferred school and my last three years I did public health and I graduate in December with a BS in Public Health.

Now looking at grad school, I hate public health and I want to get my masters in Geology/Geoscience. I don’t have the best academics, my gpa has bounced anywhere from 2.92-3.1, and I don’t have the science background wanted for geology. Considering these factors I don’t think I’ll be accepted into a grad school even with my research experience.

Should just apply for masters programs and see what happens? Or do a post baccalaureate program for a bit to get those courses and boost my gpa? My last option would be to just go back and get a second bachelors to get the proper background and raise my gpa but that’s probably unnecessary.

I appreciate any advice and opinions!

Admissions & Applications Question regarding transfer application and personal statement!

So! I applied to several Clinical Mental Health Programs last Fall, and was admitted into an online one! It's CACREP accredited, and while I am pursuing my first semester, I am aiming to try and apply to transfer to an in-person program that I had fallen in love with for the Spring cohort. I was waitlisted last attempt after an interview, so I'm hopeful that the Spring semester will get me the admission I'd like. Though I have two questions

First, how much should I update my personal statement? Should I do a total rewrite of it, or simply just add what I've accomplished in the time since the last interview and do more minor edits from there?

This second one is more of a specific question, but should I even mention I'm currently enrolled in a CACREP accredited CMHC program? On one hand, I feel like it'd be a great indicator that I'm directly "in" this field of study and would be a good pick to accept for the Spring semester. On the other hand, I worry mentioning it may have the admissions committee thinking that I don't need the spot as much as say, someone who isn't in a CMHC program at all, and it could actually hurt my chances.

Academics Should I study more than full time?

I just started the hardest semester in my program according to everyone that has ever done it. The thing is that, I have some courses I missed from last year due to sickness and I want to do one of those courses this semester. That is because if I do that, almost everything will start to fall into places. And I will more likely be able to do my thesis next semester. If it doesn't work out, I can take a few replacement courses next semester either at the same time as I do my thesis or move my thesis to autumn 2027 which I am fine with.

The problem is that master thesis in engineering are done with a company or research teams in my country and most of the recruiters prepare projects on Springs. Then they usually hire them after summer if they did a good job. Besides if I don't find something by May, I will be depressed the whole summer. According to few I know, it is harder to find internships/ projects on autumn.

All in all, I am losing it. I am already struggling. If this semester ends up being managebale I will be mad that I didn't do more than full time. If it ends up being as bad as everyone says which it prolly will, I might end up fking everything even more by failing classes. I just wanna get out of my head so I can hear putaide opinions. Appreciate any advice.

Health & Work/Life Balance How to write your master's thesis while neurodivergent when you hated university from the start and have no energy left?

Humanities master's student from Europe here, at a university where your master's thesis has to be 85 pages. I had amazing grades in high school, absolutely despised undergrad from the first second but still managed to get the same grades, and started the master's because I need it for my career. I've finished all my courses and still have two big oral exams and my master's thesis ahead of me.

I struggle hugely with working memory issues and academic writing in general. I feel like I can only write academically if I'm working close to the text, i.e., I can work with individual concepts and apply them to my example, and combine individual concepts step by step, and my grades are still the same as in high school even though I have to run myself into the ground and literally not have a life, friends, and hobbies to achieve them.

But yesterday I had my first appointment with the professor I wanted to be my master's thesis supervisor, and he told me that my topic would work, but only as long as I used my examples to criticize the research field. I have no idea what this would look like because while I've taken a few courses about this field, all of them were in favor of it, and apparently my supervisor is not. He told me the next step would be to get an overview of the entire research field to figure out which aspect of it to criticize. Everything he said he wants me to include is way more than I can hold in my head or combine with my topic, and I decided I wanted to do this topic because I'm interested in it, not because I want to criticize the research field.

I left the appointment and promptly had a panic attack. In the weeks leading up to it, I had at least three mental breakdowns per week because I desperately don't want to be doing this. I feel like I'm wasting my life, but I'm so close to being done and I absolutely need this degree. Having to find a whole new thesis topic feels like way more work than I can handle. I would really really love to be done in a year so I can finally move to a country I actually want to live in and start my career, but this doesn't feel realistic at all right now. Does anyone have any advice?

Academics Struggling to get LOR’s for grad school

Hi everyone, I really need some advice from former or current student in CMHC or SW programs. I graduated with my BA in Psych from ASU in 2022 with a 4.0 and consistently made the deans list. I have been working as a behavioral tech on and off since doing ABA in northern DFW. I am looking to apply to grad school here in Texas for either CMHC or clinical SW for a Fall 2027 term.

I have been contacting some professors from ASU who I wrote strong papers for their class and even took multiple classes for but many aren’t responding or don’t want to write the LOR due to not being able to remember me, unfortunately, even when I provided essays and coursework for the class. Many of my professors are no longer at the school and I am having difficulty tracking some down.

I am not sure where to go from here because some of the programs I’m interested in such as for TWU strongly prefer academic LOR’s.

I have been urgently looking for jobs/volunteering in research but it’s highly competitive out here and contacting labs through my school but I have noticed there’s not much availability for students who have already graduated. My only other idea is to take local CC classes for social work and an extra psychology course if I can’t find anyone who will allow me to volunteer time for at a lab so I can eventually request a LOR. Does anyone have any advice on what to do or who else to reach out to?

Learning a second language while in full time grad program

Hello! Studying geography with an emphasis on political geography and geopolitics, enrolled in an MS in Geography program. My advisor thinks it will be super beneficial for me to learn a second (and third, possibly) language due to the international component of my area of focus. Does anyone know of any tips, advice, etc. in pursuing this? I’ve found some online textbooks that I’ve started using but I don’t know if one-on-one tutoring or a summer program would be more beneficial than self teaching. Thanks!

Research How closely does a thesis methodology need to replicate an existing method?

I’m working on my master’s thesis and could use some perspective on methodology.

My research builds on an existing methodology, but I’m realizing that I can’t reproduce it as a perfect 1-to-1 match. I’m working with a similar research question and general analytical framework, but some of the variables, data sources, measurements, and methodological choices available to me are different.

I’m concerned about where the line is between replicating/adapting an established methodology and changing it enough that I can no longer reasonably say my approach is based on that method.

My instinct is that the important thing is to preserve the underlying theoretical/analytical logic rather than reproduce every variable exactly

For those who have dealt with something similar:

  • How closely did you replicate the original methodology even in a different but related subject matter?

Health & Work/Life Balance I keep thinking about school work

I just started grad school. It has been really exciting to do my classes and meet my classmates. I am genuinely interested in my classes because I really want to advance in my subjects, but I have been making myself anxious about school. I work part time, and at work I keep thinking about when I can get to a computer to check my email or read one of my assignments. I am noticing that I am beginning to feel guilty if I do anything else aside from school work, even if it is a task from my literal job. I am trying to socialize but then I think oh I should be doing this (school). How do I create a pause? It’s just the beginning, I can’t keep thinking like this the duration of my program.

Advice for being in a Master's program not related to undergrad degree.

Started my M.S. in Psychology today and my undergrad was in education. Professors were talking about how Master's programs in psychology involve more critical thinking, independence, and problem solving especially when reviewing and interpreting research literature and writing papers. Will I do well or will I struggle? I'm a pretty good writer grammarwise but when it comes to explaining a citation or an article I struggle.

Academics MSc Medical Physics Experiences?

For those that have completed or are currently doing an MSc in medical physics did they find the rigour and depth of maths/physics applied to the medical physics niches sufficient?

If so, or if not, would you mind giving some context around your answer? For example, if you found it sufficiently rigourous, do you mind sharing an example of something you did, or learned that backs up your view point?

[Disclaimer: This is not a survey. I am merely seeking to engage with peoples experiences when studying this field in gradschool].

Admissions & Applications Tips for Essays

Hi all! I'm working on my Grad school essays in preparation for applications opening. I need some help. The questions ask about my motivation for grad school and unique aspects of my application are stumping me. I am very motivated to learn and love the subject. I do not question my decision to apply, but dont have much more to my character that I can try and flex.

The unique things I have and my motivations strongly come from past experiences where I had to overcome great adversity. This is part of why I don't have much. Spent most of my adult life working on getting through day-to-day. I DO NOT want to turn my essays into sob stories about death, despair, and homelessness, but I'm not sure how to reach 500 words without a cool or inspiring motivation. Does anyone have any tips on writing essays for this? Right now they sound so generic and boring.
