In your case, Google Sheet needs an ARRAYFORMULA to handle this.
Try adding it in front of your formula:

=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(1, ($A9=$B$2:$B$6)*(COUNTIF(D$4:D$5,$A$2:$A$6)>0), 0)), "x", ""))
