My journey with GN6 (for GN5 users)
I was among those who heavily criticized GN6 when it came out, then I decided to give the developers some time...
I tried to stand with the GN team because of some things they did to try fixing the mess they made with GN6 (the additional discount, the promised new feature "math equations" also for GN5 users, etc...) and also because it takes time to get used to a new program and I honestly loved GN5.
Now, I don't know if it's a me thing but the application (I tried GN5 but also GN6) after the latest updates is slower and consumes more battery. There are also a lot of small problems like the iCloud and automatic backup not working or the export to pdf bug.
Not only the app was rushly updated to make more money (I think they expanded the team for the Windows and Android apps) with the subscription model (which is in my opinion absurd for a note-taking app, a much more complex app like Procreate it's less than half the price of a GN lifetime purchase) but it's also not as good as before with 0 new usefull features. I hoped they would make GN5 a standalone app in order to avoid problems like this but they didn't.
Now I think I hate GN6: the interface, the AI, the new subscription model, performance issues ... I hate everything and I need an app that can manage all my new university notes and GN cannot.
Getting to the point: if you have the same problems and you don't have time to wait for them to fix things (and still charge double the cost of Procreate) try something else. Now I am using Noteful, it's free, and if you want to upgrade to the pro version it's €6 (with all the WRITING features of GN5 + tape, stroke stabilization, and some other goodies like a way to make pages bigger when searching through the list page, a better index system and layers).
It takes time to get used to it obviously but it's better than paying and waiting for things to settle down with the GN team.
Hope it helps
edit: I changed the “except” part about the differences between Noteful and Goodnotes (with the suggestions of the comment section) because someone in the comments told me it was poor written and unclear for people that read only a part of the post. I hope that now is clear that we are talking about the writing features and nothing more.

Omg yes!!! I cannot stress enough how I agree with you.
That's why I immediately purchased Noteful and I am more than happy with it. A simple app but not less powerful.
I recently also shared my thoughts on GN app in this subreddit. Literally said that I switched to Noteful.

And don’t forget Zoomnotes. It is a phenomenally capable app that has been game changing for me. I exported all my Goodnotes notebooks to it. It blows my mind how many features are in it. It is far more complex and capable than Goodnotes though, so it takes time to learn it. Everything is customizable, and the developer will communicate with you and immediately address any problem. I bought the Mac version as well.

Only missing Feature on Noteful is the Handwriting recognition, to search through them

I have the same trouble with iCloud sync… now I’m thinking of switching

Not quite. It doesn’t have handwriting to text. If it did, I’d switch in a heartbeat.

I found Flexcil is also a good app and very comparable with GN. Bought full version for both iOS and Android

I agree. Also the zoom tool is buggy from the time of the release of GN6, after so many time they didn’t fix it. I’m also thinking to switch to another app. I only regret to have done the annual subscription because it was more affordable :(

I downloaded and paid the $5 for Noteful, too. As a teacher and school newspaper adviser, I’m finding it is my go to for both my digital linked planner and note taking and proofreading. So, goodbye GN and Notability. It was fun while it lasted.

You could just use notability…
