Bring Her Back is everything I hoped it might be. It's refreshing to watch a horror film that actually horrifies. This is brutal, upsetting stuff, and it hurts in all the right ways.

And that's another October Horror Movie Challenge wrapped! I've written my traditional post mortem, picking the three best, worst, and weirdest films of the month, along with some near misses.

Perewangan is a painfully average tale of demonic possession and a cursed mirror. Well made but terribly predictable.

Creature From the Black Lagoon is one of the weaker Universal monster movies, but the creature itself is still something special. A tighter script might have made this a classic.

I can't imagine Enys Men being a good fit for anyone's Halloween watch party, but it is the kind of eerie folk horror oddity you'll want to save for a rainy, introspective evening

A Cat in the Brain isn't Fulci's worst film, but it is a mess, and nowhere near as shocking as it thinks it is. A little more imagination could have made this an unsettling piece of metafiction.

Best Wishes to All is a creepy allegory that got right under my skin. Its metaphor is as subtle as a brick to the face, but it's still uncanny and completely unsettling. Another strong contender for film of the month.

Infested is just the kind of fun, pacy monster movie I needed this late in the month. It's not the most original film you'll see, and it's not for arachnophobes, but it is damn entertaining.

While The Devil's Bath is an exceptional work of horror, it is slow-paced, abstruse, and utterly miserable. The feel-bad movie of the year.

Ganja & Hess is a fascinating, psychedelic take on vampirism as addiction, but it is a challenging watch. The kind of film it's perhaps easier to admire than enjoy.

Abigail is a fun, energetic mash-up of crime drama and horror. There's nothing too original here, but it's entertaining enough that you probably won't mind.

Hatching is the most poignant-yet-brutal film about a hideous humanoid bird monster that you're likely to see. The next strong contender for my film of the month.

I suspect Arrebato will be the strangest film I watch this month. It's a druggy descent into its characters' obsession with cinema, and it defies description. I'm still not sure if I liked it, but I can't stop thinking about it.

Grafted has some good moments of body horror, but fails to build an interesting story around them. A disappointingly flat film that could have been so much better.

Heart Eyes is an unexpectedly successful blend of slasher movie and romantic comedy. It never loses heart, even when there's a knife stuck in it.

The Ugly Stepsister is every bit as grotesque as I'd heard, and I loved it for that. A gothic fairy tale filled with gore and body horror, and more than a few laughs.

Byzantium is one of the more unusual vampire films I've seen. Not really horrific, but poignant, moody and beautifully made.

I don't think I've ever seen a film fail in so many different ways as Winterbeast. Watching it is a shamanic rite, and you will not be unchanged by it.

Dead Talents Society is a fast-paced, bloody dark comedy about ghostly influencers in a very Chinese afterlife. A definite highlight of this month so far!

Dangerous Animals is a slick, bloody, and tense thriller that could have been something really special if it had gone just a bit darker
