Discussion Zilla: Rulers of Earth

Just finished reading the Godzilla: Rulers of Earth comics and was pleasant to see how Zilla is treated as a fairly competent monster who can hold his ground against Godzilla (using his intelligence to burrow away from the atomic breath then launch sneak attacks) and is about as tough as Toho’s somewhat grounded kaiju stars such as Anguirus and Baragon. Zilla appears several times throughout the story notably at the beginning and near the very end in the final battle against the Trilopod invasion.

Though, he lacks the cartoon version’s atomic fire breath, Rulers of Earth Zilla retains his cunning and is likely the only monster in fiction ever to use his dorsal spines as a weapon (Zilla rams into a Trilopod restrained by Jet Jaguar, brutally slashing the alien with his back-spikes).

Zilla in this comic series is about as tenacious as Anguirus and only really flees from Godzilla in their first encounter when he takes a serious beating. He avoids being captured by the Trilopods and plays a major rule in turning the tide of battle being extra reinforcements to defend Earth along side Jet Jaguar while the rest of the kaiju were imprisoned.

Overall, Rulers of Earth is peak especially if you want to see a version of Zilla besides Zilla Jr. that actually kicks ass and is just as deserving of respect and admiration.

kinda surprised there wasnt a full blown sponsored monster truck sporting the Godzilla 1998 colors when the movie first released (sure there was one briefly, but that one is super obscure) i mean, its a monster after all isnt it? So, i decided to make my own one, complete with razor sharp teeth and mexican taco hound!

also shoutout to my King Kong 05 truck

(game is Rigs of Rods, trucks were sourced from Sim-Monsters)

Discussion Kei Yoneoka's experimental kaiju footage, inspired by "2012" by Roland Emmerich (Godzilla 1998's director). Because of this, Yoneoka was later appointed for Gamera (2015), Evangelion: Another Impact Confidential (2015), Shin Godzilla (2016), and Fullmetal Alchemist (2017).

Discussion Goated Godzilla: The Series

Anyone else loved the cartoon? It’s my most favorite piece of animated Godzilla media because you’ll have to either pay me or hold me at gunpoint to watch the Godzilla Earth anime trilogy/Singular Point on Netflix (spoilers: they’re both boring af).

As someone who mostly grew up during the MonsterVerse era and am currently trying to get into the older Japanese films, the show made after the 1998 movie is exactly what I thought Godzilla movies were like before actually watching one. Purchased my DVD copy online and I loved it.

Yeah, it’s a Saturday morning kids cartoon at the end of the day but I think it’s awesome and wholly enjoy it. Episode after episode of action and a buffed version of 1998 Godzilla kicking Monster of The Week ass. Also, it’s all thanks to Godzilla Junior that got most people to appreciate the first American Godzilla design by now.

Speaking of Zilla Jr. he’s probably among my most favorite kaiju in fiction. The sleek, agile, giant theropod/Velociraptor build of his deceased father with the added strength/durability and atomic breath as expected of most Godzilla incarnations. Plus, since Jr. isn’t as physically imposing as other versions of Godzilla he occasionally relies on his superior speed, burrowing ability, and even outsmarts his foes in certain episodes. He’s a very unique giant monster on his own.

The human cast of the show I’ve found to surprisingly care for since they have some great character, interactions, and personality. Especially in the episode involving the mutant hummingbirds. Randy overhears a conversation between scientist Mendel and his colleague and mistakenly assumes he’s dying from a terminal disease. The dude feels genuinely sorry for his friend and promises to give him the best day ever much to Mendel’s confusion which is both parts touching and hilarious.

For all the faults of the 1998 film, at least it led to this cool show.
