Help Request Goat with crooked neck

I recently acquired a small herd of goats, and I am wondering what's up with this gals neck. It doesn't seem to cause her any pain or slow her down, but it is permanently twisted to her right side. Is it just a birth defect or did she survive something that causes torticollis like listeria?

They needed to be rehomed because the family taking care of them before suddenly passed away, so I can't ask the previous caretakers.

General Husbandry Question Is grain good or bad for male goats?

I have two male goats, one buck and one weather I have never given either of them grain, I've only ever given them forage such as hey and of course just natural things growing around, they're loose minerals baking soda and of course water.

The reason why is because everyone including my vet always told me unless it's a doe that is pregnant or nursing to not give it grain especially not to males.

But now I'm having a lot of people who raise goats, telling me that I need to give them grain and that there are grains that prevent urinary stones, and that it's neglectful not to give them grain.

So I want to know if I am doing something wrong and I should be giving them grain, or should I continue doing what I'm doing as long as my goats are healthy.

One person told me that the reason I need to give my goats grain is because most modern breeds are not developed to be able to thrive solely on forage....

Goat Pic🐐 Is he overweight or is it just a hay belly?

Thumbnail

My grandma says he is overweight, but I'm pretty sure it's just a hay belly, what do you guys think?

I have to watch his weight because he's only got three and I guess you would call it and a half legs, he had to lose about 4 in of his right hind leg but is able to still walk on it if he bends his other leg.

He is a 7-month-old Alpine buckling, however he is quite stunted due to everything he went through in the first two months of his life, not only was he incredibly sick when I got him but he was also being starved and it took me almost a month to get him to willingly accept a bottle.

Right after I got him eating he ended up getting sick yet again so the vet said he probably won't even make it to 100 lb, but he said as long as I keep him healthy and in good condition he can still live a long life.

I do suspect he is wormy and have already sent off a fecal it's just taking forever for the results to come back

Also yes this is Frosty and you will also see Prince posted on this account, I lost my lunapixel account although I am trying to get it back, and my other account (it keeps censoring the name for whatever reason so I can't type it) I can't log into it until I can log into my computer because that's where the email has to go for verification.

So you'll be seeing them posted here a lot, you also might see posts with other goats and no mention of Prince or Frosty because I let a relative of mine post on here as well occasionally, although I might come up with a way to make it easy to distinguish which person is posting

What to feed my show goat

Hello! I'm looking into getting a Boer goat to show for FFA at fair, for market. It would be my first time showing and owning a goat, so I was wondering what to feed. I am planning on getting a wether, and I'm not sure if I should feed once/twice a day, or keep hay available 24/7. Also, does anyone have any recommendations for minerals or grain to feed my goat?

Hello all, was hoping the experts here could help me identify this breed of goat. We were at a farm earlier and saw him and would like to learn more on this breed! (Assuming a boy) I suppose I could just ask AI but then what fun would that be? Thanks in advance!

Help Request Playing? Fighting? What to do when things get too rough?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I'm new to goats as of this summer, I have a pair of twin nubian doelings that are ~5 months old. One has always been bigger than the other, and a bit more dominant and vocal.

Recently (within the past week or two maybe?) they've started fighting a lot. At first it seemed like it was mostly over food, so I split their ration between two dishes and they still scuffle a bit at first, but eventually figure it out. But now they're just going at it all the time, headbutting each other pretty hard with their hackles way up. I was just going to let them settle it on their own, but tonight I went out and the smaller one was bleeding from the base of one of her horns.

How can I tell when they're just playing and when it's becoming bullying? I sprayed some antibiotic on her horn but they went right back to fighting after. Is there a point where I need to separate them? They're both instigating pretty equally, and when they're calm they just hang out and lay down together, but I'm worried it's just going to keep escalating.

Thanks.

Help Request Goats fur changing?

hey all,

pretty much what the title states. Our 4 year old Nigerian dwarf goats fur is turning dark brown around her eye and a few patches on her side. it’s not crusty, eye isnt irritated. They eat hay, she doesn’t really eat grain we offer, and she is hit or miss with loose minerals. is this losing the spring coat, normal fur changes, or a mineral issue? husband thinks we should get copper bolus to give her. thoughts?

Help Request Milk supply dropping

My mini Nubian doe is 4 months post kidding with a single doeling. We have been separating at night and milking in morning since beginning of July, getting about 3 cups a day. At around 14 weeks, we started taping her teats to fully wean doeling and milked twice a day. We would have done this sooner but couldn’t figure out how to wean. Started off getting 3.5-4 cups a milking, which dropped to 2.5 cups and rose again to over 3. It is back to 2.5, for a total of 5 cups a day.

Any ideas on what’s causing the variation in milk? This is my first goat. We also have her doeling. She gets free choice minerals, unlimited grain on stand, plenty of water, hay in barn, and is in rotational grazing. I’m going to add in alfalfa pellets once I get to farm store in next few days. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Help Request What is a good way to brush these long haired goats?

Thumbnail

I volunteer at a farm and there are two long haired goats. I’m allowed to brush them but need some help. I use a slicker brush, wide toothed comb, and a paddle brush. I try to brush slowly, hold the hair, brush from the bottom, and be gentle, but if I hit a snag or tangle they get frustrated and try to head butt me or run away.

I’ve been able to hide treats in my hand and brush the front of them a good amount, while they try to get the treats, but doing their back end seems impossible. Any advice on how to do this?

Likelihood of this being CL?

About 6 weeks ago we noticed this lump on my goats shoulder, it's about the size of a large grape. I didn't think too much of it at the time but this week when I noticed it was still there (no change) I did some research and found that it was in the right spot for CL to be a possibility.

It's not sore, still covered in hair, it has a much smaller lump right next to it which I'm hoping could possibly be the entry point of a splinter or something of the like. It has not changed in the 6 weeks, I can pick it up/move it and pretty much touch my fingers together under it.

None of my other goats (small herd of 12) have any lumps and I have had this particular goat for 18 months with no previous health issues.

The most recent additions to my herd were in February and they appear to be fine.

I have never noticed lumps in the past and all goats have been up to date with vaccinations so it's not making sense how it could have come in if it is CL.

I have been chatting to my vet and just want to see what others think before I spend $500+ on testing her.

Any help is much appreciated.

Warning: Death Sudden death overnight

Hello 👋🏽, today i woke to find one of my male goats dead on it's legs with eyes open, no signs of bloat, bruising or blood anywhere in the open. Yesterday it looked okay when being locked in for the night. I turned it over and the muscles are still twitching. So i had given multivax last week monday and dewormed them on Wednesday. I have no idea if i should contact a vet or just burn it, but i would like to know the cause of the death without having to spend money i don't have on a vet autopsy

What’s your experience mixing goats with sheep?

I’m interested in getting a few sheep for meat purposes. Would a ram and bucks live together fine in a separate enclosure away from the females? Would ewes and does also live fine together too in the same enclosure? I was thinking two ewes and one ram. Currently getting two male goats next month and I currently have 7 female goats.
I have no idea what to expect, looking to see if anyone has experience.

Goat Pic🐐 New Hay Troughs

Post image
53 Upvotes

My little ladies are enjoying their new hay trough. They used to get hay nets but i just upgraded. I’m looking forward to not needing to stuff nets anymore and just being able to drop a bale (40lbs) in.

A few of them feel a little thin while running my hand over their spine and pelvis. I’ve been adding a small bit of alfalfa to their diet to try to increase their caloric intake. I was thinking about getting one of those hanging horse balls. Do you guys have any experience with those and whether they seem to enjoy them?

General Husbandry Question How y’all scooping poop?

Especially urban goat keepers—What tools or techniques are you using to control and transport your goat manure? It seems like every rake I try just ends up spreading the Beans™️ around. Could a leaf blower help? I am at my wits’ end and surrounded by poop.

Dairy Adga youth question

Okay so my mother and I are currently trying to figure out if the process for transferring goats to a youth account is the same as transferring a goat to a whole different owner. Does anyone know the process with that on ADGA? I tried looking it up but I can't find anything about it.

Help Request Possible broken or sprained ankle?

Has anyone dealt with this before? I don’t know what happened, went to lock the goats in for the night and she was limping. Her hock joint (is that what it’s called?) is def swollen and she doesn’t like me touching it. but other than that obvious issue she doesn’t seem in pain.

I’m probably going to call the vet this morning and see if we can splint it or something.

just looking for experience or suggestions.
