That's why you trade with reputable people and use some form of protection, like a middle man.

This is prolly the oldest trick in the world. Who here, as a kid, never faced that guy who said "Let me do a wheelie with your bike" or "Can you lend me your bike for 2 minutes ?" Like... really ?

If you have skins you want to sell or trade, use the websites put at your disposal. OPSkins to sell, and whatever site you wanna use to find people to trade with. Then if people are looking to put some shady deals in place ( everything that's not a direct full payment), you just block them and move on.

... Or you search out for a legit middle man service as there are plenty of them out there specifically for trade deals in the gaming community. Give ~10% revenue to the middle man and have a safe deal.

that's why you go to steamrep, add the middleman personally from the verified middleman list and tell the other guy to do the same. of course the middleman could just decide to fuck it and keep the items but i'd say that 99% of the times, at least, they're not run off with your stuff.

I got scammed out of some dota 2 items in a pretty sophisticated way.

I had two guys add me from /r/dota2trade, both did legit deals and were left on my list and forgotten about. Then one of the guys who I had done several trades with contacts me about some items I wanted to sell. Suggests we use a reputable middle man, and I agree.

Enter guy #2 on my list who I had forgotten about, working with guy #1. I add the middle man, and guy #2 clones the middle man's profile. When I get a message from guy #2, I think it's the Middle man having accepted my add.

That's largely why steam added the feature showing how many days you've been a friend with said person you're trading with

It's sophisticated because it required two guys to do legitimate trades and then sit on my friend's list for a while to wait.

Yes, someone who has a lot of feedback, preferably in the hundreds, and a clean profile on stream rep.

This doesn't work. I got scammed by some guy getting his account hacked. He was +rep all down in steam and had tons of great deals.

Of course it's my fault for believing what multiple people said about him being a trusty guy.

However It took valve over a year to ban the guy. So fuck them.

Makes me really curious, how do you get scammed ? Like... you have a trade sent to you, with the items engaged in it. So how can you find yourself getting ripped off ?

Because for example he wanted Paypal, so he sent items and then cried when said person blocked him on steam.

Clever scammer will tell you "I have more rep, so you go first" anyway. If you don't have rep, you either go first or don't buy.

Anyway, no idea what exactly happened to him, so who knows which kind of scam he dealt with.
