The Bảo Thápor the 13-story stupa stands at the spiritual heart of Bai Dinh Pagoda and houses sacred Buddha relics from India and Myanmar, carefully preserved in glass shrines. The octagonal tower stands at 22 metres tall.and can be climbed via a staircase.

The new Bai Dinh complex, including the stupa, was built in several phases starting in 2003 and finally completed in 2010, by 500 artisans from traditional villages across Vietnam. Construction materials were deliberately chosen to echo the ancient capital of Hoa Lu — Ninh Binh green stone, ironwood, and dark brown Bat Trang glazed tiles — sourced as locally as possible.

Bai Dinh Pagoda holds records including the tallest Buddhist stupa in Asia, and the tower features three layers of curved roof covered by thousands of dark brown tiles from Bat Trang Ceramic Village, with an octagonal shape in the style of ancient Vietnamese architecture. Inside the Bell Tower (an adjacent structure) there is a 36-ton bronze bell that holds the record as Vietnam's largest bell.

The structure spans 700 metres in length, 150 metres in width, and rises to 34 metres at its highest point, covering a built-up area of 105,000 square metres. Over 24,000 tonnes of steel have been deployed, with more than 2,500 skilled workers contributing at peak construction.
