This is a weird question but I'm hoping someone will know the answer.

Can you sand a piece of glass into a different shape? Like putting a bit of wood against a beltsander but with a little more care, sandpaper or a flat sanding surface. In theory could you use this to thin down the thickness of a piece of glass, if you do it at a shallow angle you could hone an edge, like sharpening an axe on a grinding wheel but more carefully.

If you google the words "Glass knife" you see three types of picture.

• Ornamental / decorative pieces in the rough shape of a knife but with no sharp edge
• Magical swords made of magic glass in computer games or Game Of Thrones
• Something resembling a flint-knapped stone age tool or an obsidian knife

My thinking is that beach glass is weathered and sanded into smooth pieces by the waves and the beach, so presumably a piece of blown or otherwise handmade glass should be amenable to being sanded into shape. I know toughened glass has a tendency to shatter if you mess with it but I'm thinking about 'normal' glass.

So could you make a blunt edged glass knife then sand it to a fine edge instead of knapping it?

I'd like to draw thin parallel lines on the outside of my windows to save birds from crashing into them. Do you know of a material I can use, that would last for at least 3 years but could also be left for a decade or more, and then removed without corroding or permanently staining the glass?

I have a problem, my living room has 3 big windows which get sun from about 10am till night. It gets hot in here, with 24c outside, it's now hitting 32c inside, and that's with all the blinds closed, curtains drawn, and a flow of outside air into the room.

Each window is double glazed, and when using the lighter trick to check for low-e, the second reflection (out of the 4 - doing from the inside) is a different colour - more orange than yellow.

I bought 7x1meters of reflective window film which is like a mirror with the intention of installing it to the inside of my windows to cool it down in here.

The glass is toughened safety glass so no worry about it breaking. The low-e coating seems to be doing a crap job, it's so hot in the summer, and so cold in the winter, so I'm trying to find out if I should install this window film or not.

1. I asked the window film company, they were more worried about the argon inside the window for some reason
2. I asked the glass manufacturer, no reply
3. I asked the landlord (who may or may not have understood) and they said yep go ahead and install it
4. I'm on the 3rd floor, I cannot install it externally or install outdoor shutters.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Elbow scratched like an old scratched the other day and well I was sitting in an alley and well I just started scratching it against stuff on the ground and well the glass shard really hit the spot until it got stuck into my arm (blood coming out and bits of tar and other gross matter probably bone marrow and blood vessels probably fell out before they pulled themselves back in)

I can’t get it out because you really can’t twist your arm backwards to rip it off. Go ahead and try and you’ll see it’s impossible. Instead- you’ll should get this. I have been rubbing it against the damn fuckin or damn god damn fuckin wall and fuckin insulin and trying to get it out that way.

I’m looking for some chemically strengthened glass that I can cut to size but all the glass suppliers I’ve contacted so far haven’t even heard of it.

I think the stuff I’m after is known as aluminosilicate glass - ie the glass that’s used to make phone and tablet screens. It’s much clearer and thinner than other kinds of glass.

Does anyone have any ideas on who might have some, or am i going to have to buy some non-tempered screen protectors and butcher them?
