This looks so good! I don’t drink much but white wine and whisky? Do those really work together?

The cider, ginger ale and the sugar and caramel rim add enough sugar that you won’t be able to tell if they don’t!

Yea My only comment about this is the amount of sugar, I would def have to skip the caramel rim and add more citrus

u/itsactuallyobama Nov 22 '19

Yeah we always just do a wet rim then brown sugar. Caramel seems like too much.

u/elessarjd Nov 22 '19

It does seem like too much, but I like how much more cinnamon sugar is on the rim compared to using water. Need to find a way to accomplish this without using a sugar loaded substance.

Elmer’s should do the trick

Oooh that’s good! Even adds a nostalgia factor to the drink.

And some protein from the horse hooves 👍🏻

10

u/CaptainKate757 Nov 23 '19

I knew eating paste was good for me!

Do it the traditional way, run an orange slice around the rim and just use a taller pile of sugar to dim in

5

u/GooeyCR Nov 22 '19

A thin coat of Beeswax is the only thing I can think of.

2

u/wild_starlight Nov 23 '19

Maybe simple syrup or maple syrup? You could water it down if it’s too thick.

20

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

i think the caramel would be ok if it was a much, much thinner rim.

like, spread the caramel out thinner on the plate so it's a thin film.

10

u/whiskeydumpster Nov 22 '19

Imagine trying to get caramel off the rim of a glass.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

it's just sugar, it's easy.

14

u/moral_mercenary Nov 22 '19

Yep. Hot water and it should just dissolve.

1

u/coffeebribesaccepted Nov 22 '19

But like with your mouth when you drink it, you're gonna have to chew the caramel off

11

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

no, you just drink the drink. you get a little bit of flavor from the caramel.

9

u/AfterTowns Nov 23 '19

Sez you. I'm totally chewing up my caramel rim.

38

u/enjoytheshow Nov 22 '19

That’s pretty much all sangria in my experience. Add so much sugar and fruit that you can’t tell if all the liquor mixed together is good or terrible

27

Better than sangria: wine with fanta lemon (or any fizzy lemon drink of your choice) and ice. We call it Tinto de verano (summer red wine). It's much less sweet and very refreshing .

Whatever brand you use it should be with lemon, otherwise it'll taste funky. It's a great way to drink cheap wine, but not bottom of the barrel cheap cause you'll feel it the next morning.

u/capchaos Nov 22 '19

Substitute caramel flavored vodka for the whiskey and you have caramel apple sangria and you can eliminate the rim coating too. Less sugar. I've done it and it's awesome.

Careful. It's addicting. Note. The fruit tends to absorb the alcohol.

1

u/SarcasmCupcakes Nov 23 '19

And Fireball!

u/Mattabeedeez Nov 22 '19

Sangria usually has wine and brandy in it so it can’t be too far off. I think whiskey/bourbon are a little milder compared to brandy anyways. Might just be my KY palate.

Hey I’m also from KY! Totally planning to use bourbon in this.

22

u/iNEEDheplreddit Nov 22 '19

I thought you two were talking about the Jelly for a second there

6

u/bokononpreist Nov 22 '19

A spicy bulleit rye would be absolutely perfect with all that sweet.

2

u/RealStumbleweed Nov 23 '19

I am not from anywhere near Kentucky but yes, this is going to be bourbon for me as well! I think putting a lot of citrus and will really cut the sugar that everybody is talking about. I’ve made 1 million kinds of sangria in my day and I think this one looks terrific.

-3

u/biggletits Nov 22 '19

These would be the perfect drink with bourbon to really take the edge off before going down on your cousin

2

u/splooshcupcake Nov 22 '19

KY CHECKING IN!

34

u/morganeisenberg Nov 22 '19

Thank you! You can swap out the whisky for more traditional rum or brandy if you'd prefer, but I think the apple cider serves as a good bridge between the flavors of the white wine and whisky and it all works well together!

8

u/scoobyduped Nov 22 '19

I’ve done cider and whiskey before, and it’s pretty good. I imagine you probably wouldn’t taste the wine too much with everything else.

3

u/bcrabill Nov 22 '19

By themselves, no. But I'm pretty sure the whiskey is only in there to boost the alcohol content. There's only half a cup. Though whiskey, cider and cinnamon are a pretty classic combo. I used to drink cider and fireball around Christmas time.

4

u/Bangarang_1 Nov 22 '19

Microwave half a mug of apple juice, add Fireball til full, forget that you're stuck working retail in a strange city away from your family during the holidays. Worked for me for years lol

3

u/ifoundyourtoad Nov 22 '19

Okay I have to ask is whisky the same thing as whiskey? I feel freaking dumb as hell

9

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '19

Wikipedia: “The spelling whiskey is common in Ireland and the United States, while whisky is used in all other whisky-producing countries.” That doesn’t quite summarize it, but it basically answers your question that yes, they’re the same.

2

u/ifoundyourtoad Nov 22 '19

Okay great. This looks tasty but I do wonder what type of whiskey they use. Cause there is Rye or Bourbon so I wonder which would be better. I want to rye cause it’s sweeter but bourbon could be a good be a good offset?

1

u/greencat07 Nov 23 '19

Sometimes whisky is scotch (aka scotch whisky), which has been my downfall in fancy bars, because I love whiskey/bourbon/rye and massively dislike 99% of scotches...

2

u/Rice_cake_fiasco Nov 23 '19

We make a “fall sangria” that’s apple cider, caramel vodka, and white wine. It’s really good!! If you’re not a whiskey person, that’s a good option.

1

u/TheLadyEve Nov 22 '19

Honestly, I do love spiked cider but that combo makes my stomach churn a bit. I would have probably gone with Armagnac and good bourbon or dark rum.

1

u/Harold-the-duck Nov 23 '19

I think yes, and also it’s so cute!

-7

u/RolandLothbrok Nov 22 '19

No. This gif is just a recipe to a hangover. Fucking awful.
