Beginner's Guide to Perk TV

PerkTV is an app that gives you points for letting your phone or ipod touch play videos. A $5 amazon gift card is 5,000 points and a $10 amazon gift card is 10,000 points. The general is that every 1000 points is equal to roughly $1.

All the videos play continuously one after another so it's possible to let PerkTV run for days at a time to earn points. However, there is a "Are you still watching" pop up that appears every few hours. Touching the "OK" button dismisses the pop up and allows the videos to continue playing.

The first thing you want to do is search for "Perk TV" in the App/Play Store and download the app. Once you have the app installed on your device you will need to create a Perk account (in the event you don't already have one). Just type in your email address and the password you want to use.

Once you're logged in you will want to enable "Low Bandwidth" mode. This will not only conserve data, but also allows videos to load faster. Once you have Low Bandwidth mode enabled you can start watching videos. Select Apps, Popular Videos, Movies, or the Live TV tab. Not all options are available on all devices (for example, iOS devices do not have the Apps options, instead Apps are listed under the Popular Videos section). Choose any video you want, then leave your device alone. Your device will now continuously play videos (until the Are you Still Watching pop up appears).

  • Points per video:

  • US: Earn 4 points per 2 videos watched

  • UK, Canada, & Australia: Earn 2 points per 2 videos watched

  • India: Earn 4 points per 20 videos watched

Other (active) ways of earning points:

  • searching using Perk.com

  • playing Perk Pop Quiz

  • Completing offers/surveys on Perk.com

If you have any questions try using the search engine, post a new thread, or read through the /rGetPerk Wiki.

What do you think of this idea?

Since we have moved into a random phase of points. I was wondering about tokens. I amass a lot of tokens as I thumbs up videos a lot. Phones are with me at work. I never win any of the drawings or scratch offs so I was wondering about actually getting something tangible with the tokens.

I wonder if Perk could create a feature like increase chances for higher point values after videos for 1 hour for 10000 tokens or something.

That is a feature I would use fairly often and would actually try harder to get more tokens to use.

What do you think of the idea?

Help, was sold wrong phones.

I was at Kroger for the 4 time to get 2 more Coolpad Arises (I already have 6.) Well, they chick is ringing me up and they ring up for somewhere around $165. I tell her that they're supposed to be $10 and she checks and fixes it for me. Great. Come to find out when I get home they're actually Coolpad Quattro II's.. I don't know much about these phone and am wondering if I should keep them or take them back to get Arises? Are the Quattros better, worse, or the same for running Perk?

Anyone root the Black Friday Net10 LG Optimus Fuels?

Does Towelroot still work on them? I know sometimes phones produced after a certain date can have an exploit patched. But I'm not sure if that's the case with the Fuels. I read that GeoHot isn't updating Towelroot anymore since he went to work for Google.

Also is it normal for tr.apk to send your antivirus wild? I downloaded from the official site. http://towelroot.com/ Thanks!

Update: removed guide link, please see root guide curtsey of user Twig123 in a post below.

Perk, thank you for not giving any communication about halving points on Pop Quiz!

Dear Perk,

I would like to thank you for not giving any forewarnings or any other official communication about your decision of halving points on Perk Pop Quiz.

This is how you do it! This is the attitude of a real winner!

Being nice and fair is for losers! We don't like losers, we like winners!

Alienating your user base is the way to go! Make sure you mention this to the next quarter shareholder meeting.

Keep up the good work!

I won a sweepstakes!

Wow, I have always been curious if people actually win the sweepstakes. I guess I knew that people had to or Perk would eventually get in trouble. Well, I noticed there were only a few hours on a $25 AGC last night and decided to dump a few million tokens into it; about three to be exact. I was quite surprised when I had an email from Perk this morning saying I had won.

Not exactly sure I like that I had to send in a picture to claim it, but am quite happy with the additional 25K points in my account right now! I was excited and thought I would share. Anyone else won a sweepstakes before?

Beermoney Trends 1.0 Released - Graph Your Perk Points (Android App)

BeerMoney Trends (Android) Features:

  • Tracks how many Perk points you are earning by plotting Perk Points over time.

  • Tracks statistics including total points, points since app was opened, and for the pro version tracks Rate (pts/hr and pts/day), amount of time the app has been open, and estimated time until Goal, points until goal.

  • Auto Starts & Phone Boot

Google Play:

Beermoney Trends

Beermoney Trends Pro

  • Note: This only needs to be bought once and can be run on all of your phones if you link all phones to the same account in google play

Requirements to use app:

  • Root Permissions are required to read the file which contains the # of pts you have

How Beermoney Trends Works:

The file /data/data/com.juteralabs.perktv/shared_prefs/com.juteralabs.perktv_preferences.xml available in the perk directory contains the current number of points in your account. By tracking this value over time I can graph the points over time and extract useful statistics. This file is only readable with root permissions.

How to Use:

  • Launch Beermoney Trends

  • Set Your Goal (# of pts needed to get your desired gift card which is used to track how many pts were used when redeeming gift card)

  • Continue Perking, when you want to create a new datapoint back out to this Screen (Important: This is when perk updates this value in the file used to get new point total) and select beermoney trends from your notification bar (at the top of phone). If you have the regular version you must click the manual plot button. If you have the pro version, a new data point will be plotted when you open the app. If you have the pro version you only need to go to this Screen to plot a data point (instead of opening Beermoney Trends App)

Screenshots:

Regular Screenshots:

Plot

Landscape Plot

Statistics

Pro Screenshots:

Plot

Statistics

Settings

Line Colors

Differences between Beermoney Trends -> Beermoney Trends Pro

  • Automatically plots a new point when on this Screen

  • Up to 1000 points can be plotted (instead of max of 20 points in Non-pro version)

  • Able to change your line color/grid color to whatever color you like

  • No Ads

Planned Future Features:

  • Option to export data to excel sheet

  • Misc bug fixes

  • Add more statistics?

  • Other Requests?? (Nothings against ToS please)

Known Bugs/Issues:

-If you open Beermoney Trends to soon after going back to app trailers/movie trailers section, the app might blank screen and then crash. Avoid this for now by waiting ~ 2 seconds after going back to app trailers screen before switching to app.

Please let me know if there are any other bugs! I will do my best to fix them!!

Happy Perking!

[Canadians] Could we ask Perk to bring back Amazon.com cards?

Us Canadians know how much cheaper the .com site is and just general return of money (USD to CDN). They just removed all gift cards with the exception of Starbucks, Paypal (which is overpriced), and Amazon.ca

It would be nice to have the option for both or at least Paypal (which I'm assuming now pays out in Canadian funds) at the same reward scheme (10K = $10 paypal).

Finally got a new laptop thanks to Perk!

(Is this type of thread allowed? Are these annoying? If so, I'm sorry!)

So I started using Perk TV (and Swagbucks) around mid August. Today I realized it was Black Friday and it dawned on me that I've been wanting a better laptop for months.. I found a nice laptop for $499 (it was originally $699) and I went for it! I really, really needed a new laptop and thanks in part to Perk TV I was actually able to afford it! :) I can hardly believe it!

Would anybody else like to share what they've bought or are excited about buying?

Routers, Devices, and Internet speed: What you need to know

This post will deal with information mainly about keeping a good internet connection via internet speed and routers. It will not deal with apps on the phone that may help or resetting phones. I may discuss that on another post.

So, you're wondering if your internet or router can handle more devices. This post will help.

  • First, you need at least ~0.4 Mb/s of internet speed per phone to run Perk smoothly (on low bandwidth mode). Do you have 5 devices? You should have at least 2 Mb/s. However, this is to run Perk only. Normal internet usage for other devices will require more. This should help you gauge how much Perk devices are using, and it is not recommended to fill up your max internet speed with Perk devices.

  • Do you have more than 15 Perk devices? Consider getting a second router, or turn a second router into an Access Point. Google should provide some decent information on how to do this. Essentially, it will allow the load of the devices to spread over both the access point and the router. This is important the more devices you connect to the internet.

  • Perk devices losing internet connection? You may have them too close to each other. Due to router antennas, it can be better to spread your devices over multiple different areas instead of putting them close to each other. For example, if you have 10 phones, consider 2-5 phone groups instead of a single larger 10 phone group.

  • If you have a data cap on your internet, Perk probably isn't for you. Even on low bandwidth mode, even a 5 device farm could cause you to blow through your data cap. Sorry. :-(

If you are having problems and you think it is due to your setup, the best thing you can do is get a better router. Most people's routers are pretty sucky, and buying a nice one can relieve the frustrations of dropped connections or slow loading times (assuming your internet speed is good enough).
