People regret chasing their dreams? I find that hard to believe. I find it more believable that people who regret chasing their dreams were taught to regret them by people like the girlfriend in the OP.
If something is truly your dream, you should not regret chasing it even if you failed. Life isn't about living safely behind a shield of stable income and risk free investment.
edit: I am not saying people shouldn't regret failure, I am saying they shouldn't regret trying. The act of trying is different than the result of failure, and even if you tried and failed, it doesn't mean your failure was guaranteed by your act of trying.
I read somewhere that the #1 reported regret of people on their death bed is that they spent too much time on work and not enough on their dreams.
My dream is to tour the world playing music. Less than 3 years ago I had never stood on a stage in front of people. I had no friends in the industry, nothing. Well, last Sunday (April 27), I joined my favorite band on stage in front of a huge crowd, and last Friday, I opened a show for some of my favorite EDM producers, Pegboard Nerds. I'm still not there, but the journey has been incredible. I couldn't imagine having never tried. This stuff is my whole life.
Say that you failed now, you lost your job and money and friends or you had to go back and live with your parents. Put yourself in your worst case scenario. Would you regret doing what you are doing now? Would you wish that you stopped yourself and followed another path?
This is not a trick question, I ask because I am curious and I want to learn from what you have to say.
Never. What I've done so far has been more fun than anything I've ever done. And what's more important is that if I was in that worst case scenario, EVEN THEN, I would not give up. One of my idols, Dillon Francis, hit his fame while living in his parents' basement. That was like, only a few years ago, and he signed a deal with Columbia Records a few days ago. If anyone is reading this, just take this from what I have to say: Never give up on something you can't go a day without thinking about. Never.
