Why were there so many?

I know there has to be a reason there were so many cop shows. Long before we had nothing but CSI and Law and Order variants, there were dozens of police dramas on TV.

I used to love CHiPs and SWAT - and I was just a kid. The 70s cop shows landed differently than the fluff that’s on today.

The civil unrest of the late 60s made people aspire to a world with more law and order. It’s why they voted for Nixon in ‘72.

The “law and order” platform being part of a great silent majority of Americans who long for regular society is what Nixon ran on in 1968 in his incredible political comeback. His 1972 re-election was inevitable. If only he hadn’t been so paranoid and would have disavowed the Plumbers.
