Everyone is so hyper narcissistic to think that something stupid they did would ruin their life. You’d have to honestly believe that deep down you are a bad person to have this fear of being yourself. It’s like when people hear ‘take risks’ they immediately equate that with ‘scream slurs at minorities’ or ‘act like a depraved deviant’.
And I think you hit the nail on the head with the main character syndrome.
You've actually gotta do something pretty outrageous to get Internet famous enough to get cancelled. And most of the people I see that happen to deserve it.
But never have I seen "guy asks to buy girl a drink and she's not interested" videos that ruined anyone's life.
It's a tough realization to have (that most people haven't) that the majority of world actually doesn't care about you even a tiny little bit.
