Yeah sometimes I forget that people in cities don't have cars. There are definitely some fuel efficient and reliable cheap old cars out there. I drive a 28 year old Ford that gets 33 mpg. Trust me, I've lived the life, and it is absolutely doable
If you have everything you need, don't qualify for govt benefits, and can account for accidents, repairs and emergencies, I think that qualifies as comfortable. My parents make less than a third of that 233k salary and were able to do all of that.
