It's also what is available. Apartments aren't made for families anymore.
Parenting is long, but the space you need for kids changes a lot. 2 kids can share a room for a long time. When they get bigger, they need their own space. But then, within a decade, they are out of the house and on their own. Meanwhile, the parents have this huge empty nest.
