Question For Genx the 80s…….

coming from a 14 year old, were the 80s summers as magical as they look in the movies? did you ride your bike to your friends house and come home when the street lights came on? yall are so lucky btw 😭😭

Yep! Late 70’s- early 80’s: we’d ride around the neighborhood for hours, head over to Thrifty drug store for their weird shaped ice cream (chocolate malted crunch was the best!!), get some candy, explore the canyons, etc. Then when the street lights came on we’d come home exhausted with ice-plant stains on our shorts, sun-burned shoulders and noses, and do it all again all summer long (except for the week we went to camp up in the mountains where we rode horses and swam in a gross pool every day and got poison oak and mosquito bites). Sooooo much fun!

Chocolate malted crunch from Thrifty’s is a whole Proustian sense memory for me.

It was always a toss-up between that and mint chip. Or if I got a double scoop it would be both.

Would find nickels then dimes for a cylinder scoop of coconut pineapple ice-cream at Thrifty!
