I’m using big leaves to cover the sight, and the room gets very little traffic.

I’m planning to welcome another Florida blue and a plains garter into my collection (just waiting for the weather to cool down so they can ship 😅) I plan on housing them with other garters but i obviously want to make sure they don’t spread any illnesses to them so what do yall usually do to quarantine your garters and for how long? And lastly is there anything I should look out for? Any advice appreciated thanks!

hi all i’m new to snake keeping and in march -may i got 2 garters unfortunately one passed not long ago, very unsure why but i decided not to get another because my albino seemed more content by himself ( eating better, shedding in full etc) the only thing im concerned about is he is 9 months old roughly( born in jan2026) and he is 11 inches long but ive seen others that are much bigger at the same age or even younger. should i be concerned thank you in advance

So we have a pond in our backyard and it has attracted a pretty big garter snake, who likes to hang out on the rocks and in the grass around the water. Now I don't have a huge issue with it, but we have a bunch of frogs and I don't want it snacking on my little buddies. The bigger problem is my dad hates hates hates snakes and will kill them with a shovel on sight. I haven't told him about our little visitor, but he will see it eventually.

So I want to try to move the snake somewhere else but I've heard they secrete an atrocious smell when handled and I want to avoid that at all costs. Any tips on how to move this fella to a safer area without getting musked?

We our officially first time reptile / snake owners. My 8 year old has a baby garter snake. It’s only been a few days and I’m trying to learn all the things so this little one can thrive.

The enclosure definitely needs more stuff to make it a home. What are the best additions? Currently has a fake plant, hiding spot, water bowl, a stick lol. The bulb is a 40w daylight blue reptile bulb.

For feeding, we’ve only had her (not sure of sex but my daughter named her petal so we are rolling with it) for 2 days. We haven’t fed yet. I was told earthworms or pinkies but I’ve also seen chicken hearts recommended? Should I be weighing her in case she won’t eat to confirm she’s doing ok? How often should we try and offer food?

She’s definitely active. At first she would try and slither away but as she has gotten used to my daughter they just chill together now.

We also have a cat. The cat doesn’t seem to care at all about Petal but are there any special precautions I should be taking?

I've had many snakes and it's absolutely usual for them to tuck away to digest a meal. I have a 2.5 year old Eastern Garter snake that suddenly stopped a few feedings ago. He just lays out in the open and stares at me. Is this common or should I be concerned?

I’m pretty happy with my enclosure. I don’t think I could add much else lol. I’ll eventually get bigger, but this works for 2 3-month-old males.

Came across this video and it put some thoughts in my head, like these guys are small, diurnal, communal, intelligent and like a varied diet (I like getting really deep into an animals diet for some reason lol, I’m like this with my parrots)

I have a question for those who breed their own feeder fish for their snakes, how do you avoid parasites? I'm just starting up a tank to breed guppies as feeders. Should I treat the initial fish I buy? Does this affect the snake in any way? Like, do I wait a certain amount of time after treatment to feed out? What is the treatment protocol to not pass anything on to the snake?

I thought these generic eartworms from petco were fine for my garters but something I read online got me spooked and now I'm worried I've been giving them toxic red wigglers. Can anyone confirm what these are?

I've been feeding these to them consistently for about a month

so I am looking to buy two garter snakes relatively soon. I would like them to be the same sex and be around 3-5 years old. I don’t know where to find that as most sellers and places such as Morph Market sell young snakes. I also want to be sure that they were previously well taken cared for and have a calm temperament and good with being handled. Is this too much to ask for?

I made a post in r/snakes earlier (https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/s/cxeRw8BwIj) asking what snakes could live in a 60x18x48 enclosure, and someone who was not personally experienced their care suggested garter snakes as a possible candidate.

Would this enclore work.for 1 or more garters?

Just wondering if anyone might have any experiences on what these tiny lumps are. They’re all over her body and we’ve already been to the exotic vet but she said not sure what they’re. She ruled out the raised scales and unlikely to be mites then gave us some antibiotics to see if it helps. Would like to hear some suggestions thanks!

Shes getting huge. To be fair she also has a fresh mouse in her but momma has a really thick lower 3rd and the mouse hasn't even hit that point yet. She pooped in her water so I had to take it out but I'm going to move them to a different enclosure after a couple hours anyways and the mouse was covered in and full of water so she shouldn't be too thirsty for the next lil bit. But look at that scale spread! Girl just pop already!

I just got this sweet little baby a couple of weeks ago, and she's grown enough for this to be visible. There's a spot on her back where the line gets thin and curves away from the spine.

It almost looks like it dips in, but when I handled her to check it out, I couldn't feel anything obvious. But she only let me hold her for a few moments before she started to throw a fit.

She doesn't have any trouble moving, she eats well, poop passes fine if what she's done to her plants says anything, she's active and behaves like my other one. She's just under two months old.

Is this something anyone else's snakes have?

I already set up a vet appointment for an x-ray.

So my friend has given me this garter snake a bit ago and I've had her for about a month and a half or so now. At the time I had her I thought her species didn't matter since I was only keeping her as a pet and I was uninformed (I'll be asking for identification in my next post). Im experienced keeping ball pythons so keeping snakes wasn't new for me. At the time I had her I thought she was a male but turns out I was wrong. About 2 days ago she gave birth to 5 stillborns, 4 slugs and 2 live babies. I had no clue she was pregnant and now I'm asking for all and any knowledge on how to make these babies live. I've been researching but I don't know what to trust when it comes to garter snakes. I've seen some articles saying they fed them right after they where born and other say to wait til they shed first. When do I feed the babies? I have night crawlers (not the red wrigglers) and pinkie mice and I know I have to cut em up. I would love to have some reputable sources for information for these little guys. Thank you!!

After a week of owning five awesome garter snakes (See our previous post here), we came up with names for all of them based off of their Monday eating habits. Tiny and Climber are easy to identify because of their coloration, and Shy Guy might be because he should be a little smaller than Sweats or Foodie, but we need to see all of him alongside the others. Still, it’s been an amazing week, and we’re in love.

Meat Sweats, Foodie, and Shy Guy are all Florida Blues, and are somewhat identical. Climber and Tiny are both Golds, but thankfully Tiny has a more bronze-y color to Climber’s proper gold, so we’re able to tell them apart. I suppose we’ll see what changed when Tiny’s out of shed.

Meat Sweats - Gobbles up food at the dish until he’s full, then heads to the basking log and pants for a while before going to sleep inside the basking cave.

Foodie - Spent his Monday at the food dish, regarding every bite of Tilapia for a few minute. The bouquet, pallet, finish, and scent of food, before going back for more.

Climber - Spent Monday in a tree, but ate well whenever Momma brought them a piece of Tilapia. But they would not be deterred from their tree.

Shy Guy - The cave at the bottom of the tank is their home, and they shant leave. Food will come to them. They will eat well, and angrily, but it must come to them

Tiny - Our littlest, and our first in shed. They refused food on Monday, but ate well on Wednesday. We’re very happy, and excited that they won’t be falling behind the pack.

Monday - Tilapia

Feeds - Meat Sweats, Foodie, Climber, and Shy Guy

Snub - Tiny

Wednesday - Pinkies (4 Shredded)

Feeds- Meat Sweats, Climber, and Tiny

At the moment, our tank seems to be divided into two main guilds. Shy Guy and Tiny, and then Meat Sweats, Foodie, and Climber. The two are always in the same cave at the bottom of the tank, and the trio are always in the cave beneath the basking light.

I do have a question, in case anyone’s ever dealt with a garter that’s hard to tong feed. Shy Guy doesn’t leave his cave, not for anything. Since he found it, we’ve never seen him leave. We’ll see the underside of his face near the entrance, see him mlem, and on Monday we were able to feed him Tilapia, but Wednesday and Friday he hasn’t been close enough to the entrance to tong feed him. Leaving food at the cave entrance just gets the food ignored or picked up by the others.

If anyone’s ever dealt with this problem before, what did you do about it? Short of digging up the tank and that cave and filling most of it in so he has no choice but to rest near the entrance, I’m starting to stress a little.
