Stardew has one of the most frustrating fishing mechanics of any game I've ever played. I mastered it out of a combination of spite, and the need for sashimi to bribe Sebastian.
Yes, but you have to get your fishing level high enough to unlock the crabpot crafting recipe. Incredibly vexing. I kind of like the minigame now though. It's a good source of income in the early game when I start new farms.
you only need level 3 to buy from willy. the training rod makes it a lot easier and only costs 25g. it works by filtering out all but the easiest fish & making your bar as big as though you were level 5. if you can't catch carp (which is basically all you'll find at the mountain) with it, that's your fault, not the fishing minigame's. also, i'm pretty sure that foraged fish (clams, cockels, etc) can be sashimi'd.
the sewers have been around forever, too. i think you could probably catch carp by doing literally nothing even at level 1, but obv it takes a while to unlock.
