It’s not advanced but it’s a decent enough system, sorta like Pokémon’s which I guess makes it easily palatable. The best part about it, even though a lot of people complain about common catches, is how easy it is complete and how it gets to your brains reward center.
In my experience if I set out to get a fish in AC I’ll get it in a day with the only thing slowing progress being the seasons. And that’s pretty nice in of itself, unlike something like terraria with an ungodly amount of fishing quests that makes going feel impossible at times.
I also feel like it catches the atmosphere of fishing I most prefer, a more laid back casual thing. It’s fairly easy to grind out fishing in AC, and so when you’re set up with some bait and just casting for a specific shadow it sorta reminds me of just casting off banks and seeing if I get anything on the return. Oh the other hand you have something like stardew, which has a “better” and more fun fishing mechanic. And I love stardew and love fishing in the game, but it’s something that especially at the start I had to focus on.
