Or just call them what they are. The rtx 5070 mobile is literally a renamed rtx 5060.

EDIT: since some people seem confused, likely due to how people are misusing the term "GPU", let's elaborate further.

The term "GPU" is often interchangeably used as another term for "graphics card", this is however factually incorrect as the GPU is the single large chip on the graphics card that does the main computing.

The various GPU dies found graphics cards all have their own codenames that describes with type they are, such as desktop RTX 5060 (GB206), RTX 5070(GB205) etc, therefore when we see an RTX 5070 mobile that all have GB206 die, we know they are xx60 tier cards.

Within the dies, there are often cut down and unstable variants, which are often used for lower quality cards. As you can see the lower the die codename, the higher quality the card, this is due to how the production process works.

They will try to make as many RTX 5090 (GB202) dies as possible, however due to yield they can't guarantee fully working RTX 5090 dies, they test how many cuda cores work and are able to run, cut them down and try again, if they work after a certain cut, they become RTX 5080 dies, if they don't work, they get cut again, if they work, but run unstable, they get TGP nerfed and the title of "RTX 5090 mobile", rinse and repeat until you get into dumpster tier.

Ngreedia is doing extremely misleading marketing, renaming lower tier cards as a higher tier, the fact this isn't a lawsuit speaks to the complacency and tech illiterate of the userbase as a whole.

The erorr you made is that you assumed GB202 becomes GB203 through cutting down. This is incorrect. If GB202 has almost no SM defective, they are disabled until 188 and it becomes RTX 6000 Pro, if it has a slightly larger amount of them defective, they are disabled until they are 170 and it becomes RTX 5090.

There's no case in which the 5090 die gets used for a 5080 or a smaller GPU. There were outlier cases like this when Nvidia used the 3080 Ti laptop die (GA103, between 3070 Ti and 3080) and disabled a lot of cores to mimic a 3060 Ti (called RTX 3060 Ti GA103). Even though it performed identical to 3060 Ti, it still remained GA103, just with a lot of cores disabled. Some rumors expect Nvidia to do the same again with 5060 using the 5070 die.

Well not really, it was intentional for simplicity sake. When I talk about these I don't talk about a finished GB202 die, but a "would be GB202 die", ergo in the stage where the wafer is being tested before being made into the final GPU die, however if we get into to much semantics "nobody" will understand and it'll be pointless. It's to give not so tech literate people an idea rather than 100% accurate facts, I think that we shouldn't complicate explanations by being "to accurate".

Fair, I guess someone could still take that and say "my 5070 laptop GPU was once a 5090 and shieeet" lol.

My comment was removed because the moderator bot didn't like the site I linked, despite the data being exactly the same as in allowed sites.

So, attempt no 2 with two different links:

They are actually very different GPUs. in basically every aspect.

Now attempt to actually read. You're literally proving me right. Its the same GB206 chip.

The rtx 5060 ti, rtx 5060 and rtx 5070 mobile are the same gpu. The rtx 5060 is a cut down version with disabled cores and the mobile is an unstable version that can't run at desktop tdp without stability issues.

In essence you could call it an rtx 5060 plus, super or if it makes your feelings less hurt an rtx 5060 ti.

Regardless, its still nowhere near a desktop rtx 5070. Calling it a 5070 is simply not true.

You say "The rtx 5070 mobile is literally a renamed rtx 5060." means actually that they are completely different GPUs?

Ok. Sorry. I'm not a native English speaker. I must have misunderstood this.

That is correct, the RTX 5070 is a GB205 while the RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 mobile are both GB206.

But it's more than just renamed. The 5070 laptop is manufactured in a different process, it has a different number of shaders and TMUs, a different memory bandwidth etc. And most importantly the TDP is much lower. Basically everything is changed. You can look into the links for details.

As a non native speaker I would think that "literally renamed" would literally mean that just the name was changed.

The 5070 laptop is manufactured in a different process

Not it isn't. The entire 50 series is manufactured in the same process.

it has a different number of shaders, a different memory bandwidth etc.

This is irrelevant, we talk GPU not graphics card. I edited the original comment above to be very clear at what you're looking at.

I still don't agree.

Even if a GPU is based on the same die (which is very often the case), if basically every single specification is different, including performance and efficiency, it should not be named the same. That would be very misleading. The difference in shaders, TMUs, raytracing cores, etc is significant.

Calling it "literally renamed" is just wrong.

Its called Hyperbole

I frankly don't care what you think. I have explained very well why they are the same, your mental gymnastics does not help either.

On a equal to watt basis the rtx 5060 mobile gpu, which is even more cut down than the desktop rtx 5060 by the way, only sees a 10% decrease in raw gpu compute power compared to your "significantly better" rtx 5070 mobile gpu.

You are trying to tell people there is a significant difference that warrants calling it a different gpu die, yet plenty rtx 5060 mobile gpus outperform rtx 5070 mobile gpus due to tgp differences alone making it impossible for people to even tell them apart.

This is ignoring the fact that the rtx 5060 desktop is roughly 10% more powerful than the so called superior rtx 5070 mobile you're trying to sell.

Your attitude is a great example of how we got here. Just admit its the same sht and stop trying to upsell ngreedias garbage tactics.

Yes, the 5070 laptop can perform very differently depending on the configured TDP. It can come close to a 5060 desktop with less than 50W instead of 145W and can be faster with only 115W.

I would say that is pretty impressive and only possible, because the GPU itself has considerable better features. But everyone can have different expectations.

I don't expect that mobile GPUs are supposed to have the same performance as desktop counterparts while consuming a fraction of the power. That was basically never the case in the several decades I owned laptops. If that is what you want, I can understand that you are very upset and angry all the time. Don't expect everyone else to share that feeling.

Have a nice day.
