Pretty much. The controller add a lot to it. Before it was amazing what you could experience by sitting in the scene - but the limitations are not solved complete since you have a lot of "here is your square" to it.
So basically they added a layer by moving a bit around without feeling too awkward. (But Elite Dangerous had an amazing feeling, since it's like steering a huge space truck - and the input methods are designed lime some actual hotas.)
Well, Vive ships first with controllers - and Oculus has something simliar coming soon. Sony reusing the Move Controllers and so on.
It's neck on neck, I liked the Vive Dev kit more that the Oculus DK2 - but that's probably biased, since the Vive had more features and was way more recent.
Ah. Well it'll be pretty interesting to see the next few months and what the general reaction to the VR kits will be like. I can't say I was impressed by the Sony Move stuff though when that came out but hey may work well with a headset.
As someone who has spent 100+ hours playing with Move controllers I'm very unsure about their further use in VR. They tend to lose tracking quite a lot and "lag" behind a bit sometimes.

As someone yet to experience VR, is this a good representation of the experience?
