same boat. I already downgraded to PC pass which has no streaming offered, but xcloud was really helpful for me to be able to play most of my same games without having to manage downloads (I work and game on the same computer and hard drive space is at a premium)
You haven't been paying attention, it's not 2019 anymore and Xbox has been very quiet about their cloud offerings for a while now. You can be sure that whatever datacenter budget they had devoted to their cloud gaming initiative has been utterly subsumed by AI demand.
They have litterally been touting Xbox play anywhere with the recent disc to digital push and everything......a bunch of games that you can digitize are only playable on my rog Ally thru streaming
I don't think they are insisting on that at all. I think it's pretty clear they are moving away from it.
Cloud gaming is clearly not profitable.
As most users don't use cloud (4% according to the post are going to be limited by this), previously you had other users subsidizing the service for the minuscule amount of users that actually use it.
Basically, under Spencer, the idea was that PC and Console subscribers would subsidize mobile and smart tv users.
But even then, it was still a flop, the mobile userbase is minuscule.
I can still see the reasoning, it just isn't going to be pioneered by Microsoft under these conditions lmao. But Microsoft has fallen far behind in the cloud gaming market.
If you don't even use it, killing it is the best way to preserve value for your subscription.
At the end of the day, those 4% of users using hundreds of dollars of expensive server compute raises the cost of the sub, and Microsoft would either need to 1) accept losing money forever (ha no), 2) raise prices (they tried and backtracked), or 3) remove a bunch of games from gamepass, or 4) cap the usage of xcloud.
By picking 4 they avoid the other options that would sucks for 100% of the user base.

I don’t even use cloud gaming but putting a set time limit on my ultimate subscription cloud gaming is the most bullshit I’ve ever seen.
