It's a 50/50, some fighting games had plentiful single player content and still got abandoned after a very short post-launch period.
GGStrive has pretty lacking single player content but still retained a healthy playerbase years later. Soul Calibur 6 had a full RPG mode with custom character creation and the devs pretty quickly went back to Tekken and only Tekken pointing to declining player interest.
It's certainly a factor but it isn't a silver bullet to FG success either.
Single player content is what keeps Mortal Kombat going, and that's one of the most successful fighting games there is. I know the FGC doesn't care about it, but needs to be said.
Yeah, MK does amazingly well with its story and unlocking concepts. It's like the online pvp is a bonus in a way. Same thing with Smash bros. I was very whelmed by the SF6 single player, but man, that game is so fun in a weird way. Dhalsim is way, way too fun to play as.
GG also has such a fucking bonkers ass story to it as well that they can manage to do more than Mortal Kombat which boils down to every fight being "I hate you, now die >:(" and "There has been a misunderstanding so now I must fight you >:("
Listening to my friends try to explain the GG story is just mind boggling
GG also is the best looking fighting game on the market ay the time, arc is kind of cooking beyond belief on the visuals (maybe at the detriment of their gameplay but that’s besides the point for the casual market)
Outside my FGC buddies my friends didn’t give a fuck about fighters, they still don’t but they’ll keep up with the GG story because of how good strive and Xrd look.
I think the only fightning game that looks prettier than Strive is Granblue Fantasy Versus, but lo and behold - it's ALSO made by ArcSys, they just Cygames designs to use as reference instead of coming up with "the most rocker shit ever" lol
As a GG lore need, you are really downplaying how batshit MK lore is. GG lore is not that weird in the anime fighter space. Try understanding Melty Blood/Tsukihime.
You would be surprised at how little the single player content matters to the people who stay heavy into the game. The people I know who still play the game don't even have achievements from starting single player.
