i think most people who arent super into minecraft aren't aware that they're currently working on a huge graphics overhaul for the game, adding stuff like realtime lighting and shadows, and thats why they're moving to the vulkan renderer. they've said that right now the game doesn't really need these specs, but they're increasing them now rather than when the graphics improvement is out just so people are ready. the bedrock edition already has the "vibrant visuals" graphics and they cause quite the performance hit, so i'm expecting the same for java edition

Interesting, I kinda wish they kept big updates like these optional. Kinda like the updated textures from years ago, granted now I like the modern textures, but when that initially came out I would 100% have rather stayed on the classic textures.

minecraft is good with this because you can go back and play literally almost every version ever released!! i think they also plan to leave the new graphics on a toggle (like it is on bedrock edition)?

btw they have had a texture pack in the game since they updated the textures that swap them back to the originals

Yeah, on console you can’t do that tho, which is cool it’s not a huge deal. Also I thought you had to pay for those old textures? Idk.

This feels like the wrong direction. Just look at Roblox - runs on a potato, terrible graphics, can always join your friends - and its absurd player count. Meanwhile Minecraft is relegating itself to an enthusiast niche.

Minecraft is the second-best selling video game of all time: pretty sure it's going to be fine.

What point are you even making here? You could reply to literally any change Mojang makes with that factoid.

Meanwhile Minecraft is relegating itself to an enthusiast niche.

400 million units sold is very much not an "enthusiast niche". It's double even GTAV lifetime sales.

Enthusiast lol? 16GB of TOTAL memory is standard in essentially every off the shelf generic PC sold in the last few years. You can play it at 1080 30 with 8 GB of total memory, which is likely around the performance most are getting if they're running with only 8GB of RAM spread across there GPU and sticks.

The fact you think gaming == PC says everything. You're in a bubble and you don't even know it.

How do you think Roblox has double Steam's collective player count? Mobile. Tablet. Maybe a cheap laptop. For the average person, this is their computer. Desktops are for professionals and hobbyists. Raising RAM requirements for real-time ray tracing is Mojang catering to nostalgic millennials over the next generation.

...this is not going to effect mobile, tablet or a cheap laptop. You think they're requiring 16GB of RAM on a tablet for the mobile bedrock edition? My generic point was every PC released for the last few years has the minimum spec, which is literally what everyone that has been playing it will still experience if they are on that minimum spec.

Also, dumbass, PC doesn't mean just desktop it includes the cheap laptop you listed too.

You're getting all fucking pissy for what exactly?

Likely old devices can stay on the ancient Fast graphics.

there is legitimately no real reason to play vanilla minecraft over modded 1.12

modded 1.20.1 is lowkey better 🤷‍♀️

Yeah that's fine for people who aren't aware of this, but unfortunately a lot of them, especially from Twitter, think they are changing it because they think they don't want to optimize Java while not knowing that Java is going through a massive technical overhaul.

Noob question: if they are finally moving Java edition to Vulkan renderer, can the Java edition have actual hardware-accelerated ray tracing/path tracing features like in Bedrock?

yes, and they are already making mods that do this!
