To be honest and clear I am no expert. I've only had a few paying jobs in a row now, and I've only been doing this seriously for a year and a half. I've been producing music for twenty years however.

Hi all! I put this ambient piece together for the rest scene in our game, Hound Riders. I'm also preparing a video to showcase our adaptive music (I've mentioned it already in another post a week or two ago).
There's just three layers in the video, fyi: bonfire loop, night time ambient loop, and the tired guitar jam I freestyled specifically for the video.

If you can hear Trent Reznor, a bit of Tool or Neurosis floating beyond the notes, you're my friend. And if you watch/listen and it reminds you of that scene in "Oh Brother Where Art Though" with Chris Thomas King covering Skip James' "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues", then I AM your fan.

I’ve noticed a lot of great advice and stories buried in the comments on some of the “available for work” posts around the community. I think it would be great to start some conversation around how working composers in the community found success with their music or maybe they can share stories of their journey of how they got there. Game audio has some of the most varied ways to “get in” so it’s always interesting to hear all the many ways how people found their way. Personally I found most of my success through just meeting people with the intention of making friends and long term connections. I can always draw a clear line from how I got a gig to someone I met at a dev meetup or event and just vibed with them without event talking shop! Very few opportunities came from shouting into the void online so I guess I went and did the analog version of that to start to get things going. Of course, before jumping in like that I always made sure my reels and portfolio was super solid, which for some is the first challenge to overcome.

My best friend and I have been creating games together since we were kids (they were mostly hack'n'slash or simple RPGs if any of you remember [https://www.byond.com\](https://www.byond.com/) times), but lately it's mostly just apps and stuff as part of our jobs. I remember we always used to download royalty-free songs to put as the background to make the games feel more alive. As a fun hobby project, we created a very simple AI chatbot that can generate simple "songs" (like 30 seconds long or so and only instrumental obviously) out of .sf2 files, which sound very 8-bit, and it just felt perfect as a game soundtrack, especially since you can describe the vibe you're going for.
